All Star Game - Wales Conference (6) v (3) Campbell Conference - The game is remembered for 2 events ; Gordie Howe's last All Star game at 51 years old and Wayne Gretzky's 1st All Star game at 19 years old. 1981/82
Regular Season - Philadelphia Flyers (5) @ (7) Edmonton Oilers - On a record-setting night in Edmonton, the Oilers Wayne Gretzky set a new record for the quickest number of games needed to score 50 goals, as he scored 5 goals in only the 39th game of the season. Against one of the leagues best defenses, Gretzky and the Oilers took a 6-3 lead in the 3rd period and, thinking the result was safe, went about giving Gretzky the puck at every opportunity in a quest to make sure he scored his 5th and claim the record. But the Flyers fought back to only 6-5 down in the final minute, and pulled their goalie in search of the equaliser. Division Finals Game 7 - Calgary Flames (4) @ (7) Edmonton Oilers - En-route to their 1st Stanley Cup win, the Oilers clinched the Smyth Division title with a big win against their big rivals. The Flames led 4-3 in the 2nd period before the Oilers, and especially Mark Messier, took control of the game. Canada Cup Final - Game 2 - Team Canada (6) v (5) USSR - In arguably the greatest Ice Hockey game ever, Canada tied the series at 1-1 with a 2 overtime win in Hamilton. The stars for Canada were Mario Lemieux (3 goals), Wayne Gretsky (5 assists) and Goaltender Grant Fuhr. The USSR featured Sergei Makarov, Vladimir Krutov, Valeri Kamensky and Goaltender Sergei Mylnikov (9, Occasional edited dead-time, 1 Disc, CTV - Kelly/Reusch, NTSC)

Canada Cup Final - Game 3 - Team Canada (6) v (5) USSR - Canada won the cup with a stunning comeback in Hamilton, overt-turning a 3-0 deficit in the 1st Period to win. 1996/97
Regular Season - Colorado Avalanche (5) @ (6) Detroit Red Wings - The Battle of Hockeytown. The Red Wings were looking for revenge against Claude Lemieux after his dirty hit on Kris Draper earlier in the season and, after a tense start, the Red Wings got their chance as a fight between Forsberg and Larianov distracted the refs long enough for Darren McCarty to find Lemieux. With Lemieux losing the fight, Colorado goalie Patrick Roy rushed to his help but was met by Red Wings goalie Mike Vernon and a new fight started. Stanley Cup Finals - Game 1 - Edmonton Oilers (4) @ (5) Carolina Hurricanes - The Hurricanes fought back from a 3-0 deficit to draw level in the 3rd period. Stanley Cup Finals - Game 5 -
Pittsburgh Penguins (4) @ (3) Detroit Red Wings
- In an epic battle, both teams went to 3 overtimes before Pittsburgh ended the game with a Petr Sykora goal. Despite starting the game with 2 goals in the 1st period, the Penguins needed a tieing goal in the last minute to force overtime. Detroit Red Wings (3) @ (2) Pittsburgh Penguins
- The Penguins Stanley Cup dream finally ended as the Red Wings held on at the death to claim their 4th title in 11 years. Detroit captain Nilkas Lidstrom became the first European captain to lift the cup and left wing Henrik Zetterburg won the Conn Smyth award. Spengler Cup - Final -
Dynamo Moscow (5) v (3) Team Canada - Dynamo Moscow re-claimed the title for the 1st time since 1985 with a strong game against the Canadians. Dynamo Moscow took a 3-0 lead late into the 2nd Period before Team Canada scored 2 quick goals on the Power Play but Moscow re-established their lead with a quick goal in the 3rd period and then finished off the game with a goal in the final seconds. Regular Season -
San Jose Sharks (2) @ (3) Minnesota Wild
- The Wild ended their dismal run of defeats by beating the Pacific Division-leading Sharks in Overtime. Brett Burns was the hero with the winning goal 1:38 into Overtime, capping a 2 assist night. The Sharks forced overtime with a tieing goal with 25 seconds left from Milan Michalek (10, 1 Disc, FOX - Terhaar/Greenlay, PAL)

Regular Season -
Detroit Red Wings (6) v (4) Chicago Blackhawks - In the 3rd annual Winter Classic, played outside in Chicago's Wrigley Field, the Red Wings came back from an early 3-1 deficit to beat the Blackhawks. Early goals from Kris Versteeg, Martin Havlat and Ben Eager gave the home fans thoughts of an upset but the World Champions stormed back with 5 unanswered goals from Jiri Hudler (2), Pavel Datsyuk, Brian Rafalski and Brett Lebda. Regular Season - Toronto Maple Leafs (2) @ (3) Ottawa Senators - In a hard-hitting "Battle of Ontario", the Senators fought back from a 2-1 deficit in the 2nd Period to condemn the Leafs to their 4th straight loss. There were 3 fights in the opening 20 minutes and 4 overall. The Senators won the game on a 2nd Period goal from Mike Fisher, his 2nd of the game (10, 1 Disc, Rogers Sportsnet - Bowen/Millen, PAL)

Regular Season - Philadelphia Flyers (1) v (2) Boston Bruins - The annual Winter Classic was played outside at Fenway Park in Boston and the hometown Bruins gave the fans something to cheer about, beating the Flyers in Overtime. The Flyers took a bizarre 2nd Period lead on a Danny Syvret goal, scored when goalie Tim Thomas cross-checked Scott Hartnell to the ice from behind as Syvret shot. Seconds earlier, Hartnell had hit Thomas, knocking him off his skates. The game looked over as the Bruins struggled to get shots off but with 2:18 to go, Mark Recchi equalised and then, 1:57 into overtime Marco Sturm scored the winner. Eastern Conference Semi-Final Game 7 - Montreal Canadiens (5) @ (2) Pittsburgh Penguins - The underdog Habs continued their fairy-tale run in the playoffs by knocking out the defending Stanley Cup champions. In the winner-takes-all game 7, Montreal took control early with a 4 goals in the opening 25 minutes. The Penguins mounted a small rally with 2 goals in the 2nd period but Montreal controlled the 3rd period and took the win. The Montreal goals came from Brian Gionta (2), Dominic Moore, Michael Cammalleri and Travis Moen. The Pittsburgh goals came from Chris Kunitz and Jordan Staal. Stanley Cup Finals - Game 1 - Philadelphia Flyers (5) @ (6) Chicago Blackhawks - The opening game of the Finals saw a high-scoring affair, with neither team able to pull away from the other, but the 'Hawks took the win with a 3rd period goal from Tomas Kopecky. The win was the 'Hawks first Finals win since 1973. The 'Hawks also got goals from Troy Brouwer, Dave Bolland, Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg. Stanley Cup Game 3 - Chicago Blackhawks (3) @ (4) Philadelphia Flyers - The Flyers finally earned their 1st series win with an Overtime win in Philadelphia. Stanley Cup Game 4 - Philadelphia Flyers (5) @ (3) Chicago Blackhawks - The Flyers tied the series with a quick start and then strong defense, holding off a late 'Hawks fightback. 3 goals in the 1st period from Mike Richards, Matt Carle and Claude Giroux settled the nerves and even when Chicago pulled the game back to 4-3 in the 3rd Period, the Flyers managed to score a late empty-net goal to seal the win (10, 2 Discs, CBC - Hughson/Simpson, PAL)

Stanley Cup Game 5 - Philadelphia Flyers (4) @ (7) Chicago Blackhawks - The series stayed true to form as the home team won again, and with the win the Blackhawks moved within 1 game of the Stanley Cup. 3 goals in the 1st Period for the 'Hawks gave them the lead they wouldn't relinquish and even a late flurry from the Flyers wasn't enough to sneak the win. Stanley Cup Game 6 - Chicago Blackhawks (4) @ (3) Philadelphia Flyers - The Blackhawks finally ended their 49 year wait for a Championship as they stunned the home-town Flyers with an Overtime victory. The hero was heralded 1st round pick in 2007, Patrick Kane, as he hit a low shot into the net that no-one else saw go in, and it took several seconds for everyone else to realise what had happened. Regular Season - Washington Capitals (3) v (1) Pittsburgh Penguins - Despite the rain and the unprecedented night-time start, the annual Winter Classic was played outside at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The Capitals adjusted better, with Eric Fehr scoring 2 goals after a scoreless 1st period and the defense held Penguins star Sidney Crosby (5 shots) without a goal for only the 2nd time in 26 games. Heritage Classic - Montreal Canadiens (0) @ (4) Calgary Flames - In the 1st Heritage Classic since 2003, the Flames enhanced their post-season intentions with a big win outside at McMahon stadium. Calgary scored in each period with goals from Rene Bourque (2), Anton Babchuk and Alex Tanguay while goalkeeper Miikka Kiprisoff held the Canadiens at bay with 39 saves. Stanley Cup Game 1 - Boston Bruins (0) @ (1) Vancouver Canucks - The favoured Canucks took a 1-0 series lead but left it late against the underdog Bruins. A goal by Raffi Torres in the final 30 seconds gave the Canucks the win in a game that featured fights, great hitting and great goal-tending. Vancouver keeper Roberto Luongo (36 saves) and Bruins keeper Tim Thomas (33 saves) both had big games while the Canucks Alex Burrows bizarrely bit Patrice Bergeron's fingers during a fight. Stanley Cup Game 2 - Boston Bruins (2) @ (3) Vancouver Canucks - Vancouver extended their series lead to 2-0 with an overtime victory against the Bruins. The Bruins led 2-1 in the 3rd period with goals from Milan Lucic and Mark Recchi before Daniel Sedin sent the game to overtime with a goal 10 minutes from the end. The game was then decided by the Canucks Alexandre Burrows who scored his 2nd of the game 11 seconds after the re-start. Stanley Cup Game 3 - Vancouver Canucks (1) @ (8) Boston Bruins - The Bruins finally got in the win column with a big win in Boston. After a scoreless 1st Period, the Bruins scored 5 unanswered goals from Andrew Ference, Mark Recchi, Brad Marchand, David Krejci and Daniel Paille to take control of the game. After Jannik Hansen pulled a goal back for the Canucks, the Bruins left no doubt about the result with 3 more goals from Chris Kelly, Mark Recchi and Michael Ryder. Stanley Cup Game 6 - Vancouver Canucks (2) @ (5) Boston Bruins - Boston continued their mastery over the Canucks at home with another big-scoring win. The Bruins raced out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st Period with goals from Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic, Andrew Ference and Michael Ryder. The shell-shocked Canucks tried to mount a 3rd Period comeback with goals from Henrik Sedin and Maxim Lapierre but a goal from David Kerjci put the final nail in the coffin. Stanley Cup Game 7 - Boston Bruins (4) @ (0) Vancouver Canucks - The Bruins won their 1st title in 39 years with a dominating win on Vancouver's home ice. The goals came from Brad Marchand (2) and Patrice Bergeron (2) but the star of the game and the series was 'keeper Tim Thomas. His 37 saves gave him a Stanley Cup record 238 saves and earned him the Conn Smythe trophy, making him the oldest ever winner. The Canucks tried all they could to score, making nearly twice as may shots as the Bruins (37-20), but Thomas proved impossible to beat. Stanley Cup Game 1 - St.Louis Blues (4) @ (1) Boston Bruins - In a "Winner-Takes-All" Game 7, St.Louis won their 1st ever Stanley Cup with a dominating win at the TD Garden. With the victory, the Blues became the last remaining expansion franchise from 1967 to win the Stanley Cup. The Bruins had more shots in the game (33-20) but the Blues took their chances, scoring 4 unanswered goals before the Bruins got on the board late in the 3rd Period. IIHF World Cup Group A - Great Britain (4) @ (3) France - In the Steel Aréna in Košice, Slovakia, Great Britain sensationally beat France in Overtime in a "Winner-Takes-All" match. In a match-up between the bottom 2 teams in the group, the loser knew they would be relegated from the top tier of World Ice Hockey. Early on, the game went the way of the French as they opened up a 3-0 lead in the 2nd Period. But Great Britain came roaring back and scored 3 unanswered goals to force Overtime, where they sensationally won the game with a breakaway goal. The Great Britain goals came from Robert Dowd, Mike Hammond, Robert Farmer and Ben Davies.
