On his 4 at-bats in the game, he walked on the first and then hit 3 home runs, becoming the first player since Babe Ruth in 1928 to hit 3 home runs in one World Series game. His hitting over-turned a 3-2 Dodgers lead in the 3rd inning, and the Yankees never trailed again. The record-breaking hit occurred in the 1st inning. In the 7th inning, Rose hit a triple into the left-field corner for his 4,193rd hit. World Series Game 1 - Oakland Athletics (4) @ (5) Los Angeles Dodgers - A star-studded Oakland team, led by Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, were hot favourites to take the World Series against the ailing Dodgers who were missing their star man Kirk Gibson. Oakland fought back from an early 2 run lead by the Dodgers with a 4 run Grand Slam homer from Jose Canseco. But in the bottom of the 9th, Kirk Gibson entered the game with a man on base and the Dodgers down by 1. Gibson worked the pitcher Dennis Eckersley to a 3-2 count before launching a sensational home run to win the game. Regular Season - Kansas City Royals (10) @ (7) New York Yankees - In an early season game at Yankee Stadium, 2 stars of the NFL showed their athleticism on the Baseball diamond, as the Royals Bo Jackson faced off against the Yankees Deion Sanders. Jackson had a big game, hitting 3 home-runs in his first 3 at-bats, before leaving the game injured in the 6th inning. Sanders had a rare "in the park home-run" in the 6th inning, rounding the bases and just reaching home before the Royals catcher could tag him out. The play of the game came from the Jays Devon White who made arguably the greatest catch in a World Series game off of David Justice. NLCS Game 6 - Florida Marlins (8) @ (3) Chicago Cubs - The Marlins prolonged the series with a huge comeback win at Wrigley Field. In what became known as the "Bartman" game, the Cubs held a 3-0 lead entering the 8th inning before the Marlins rallied with 8 unanswered runs to turn the game around and take the win. The run was triggered by Cubs fan Steve Bartman interfering with a foul ball that allowed the Marlins batter to stay at-bat, where on the next ball he advanced to 1st base. The small shift in momentum upset the Cubs and they crumbled spectacularly, allowing the Marlins to tie the series and then win it all in Game 7. ALCS Game 4 - New York Yankees (4) @ (6) Boston Red Sox - Boston kept themselves in the ALCS and avoided a sweep by their arch rivals the Yankees by winning a 12-inning marathon at Fenway Park, with the game ending at 1am. The Yankees led Game 4 by one run in the 9th inning, but a steal of second base by Red Sox base runner Dave Roberts and a single by Bill Mueller off Yankees closer Mariano Rivera tied the game. The Red Sox made the most of their reprieve and won the game in the 12th inning when David Ortiz hit a two-run walk-off home run to right field. ALCS Game 5 - New York Yankees (4 ) @ (5) Boston Red Sox - In a 14 inning marathon, the Red Sox finally overcame the Yankees and pulled the series back to 3-2. The game was the longest ALCS game ever at 5 hours and 49 minutes. Boston started the stronger with a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning but the Yankees pulled ahead 4-2 by the end of the 6th inning. The Red Sox then recovered to force extra innings with a 2 run 8th inning before finally settling the game in the 14th inning when David Ortiz (3 hits, 2 runs) singled and Johnny Damon (1 hit, 1 run) ran in the winner. ALCS Game 6 - Boston Red Sox (4) @ (2) New York Yankees - The Red Sox remarkably tied the series at 3-3 with the infamous "Curt Schilling game". Schilling, playing on a badly damaged right ankle, pitched 7 innings and only gave up 1 run on a home run to Bernie Williams. By the time he left the game, his sock was covered in blood and he was exhausted. The Red Sox took a 4-0 lead in the 4th inning on a Kevin Millar single and a 3 run home run from Mark Bellhorn. The Yankees tried to come back but Red Sox closer Keith Foulke closed the door in the 9th inning. ALCS Game 7 - Boston Red Sox (10) @ (3) New York Yankees - The Red Sox completed an improbable comeback from 3-0 down in the series to beat the Yankees and go to the World Series for the first time since 1986. Unlike the previous 3 games, the Red Sox dominated throughout, posting 6 runs by the 2nd inning and holding a 8-1 lead by the end of the 4th inning. The Yankees tried to comeback but the Red Sox finished strong with 2 more runs to take the win. Regular Season - Washington Nationals (8) @ (6) San Francisco Giants - On an emotional night at AT&T Park, Barry Bonds finally broke the all-time home run record with #756 in the 5th inning. Regular Season - Texas Rangers (30) @ (3) Baltimore Orioles - In a runs explosion in Baltimore, Texas recovered from an early 3-0 setback to score 30 unanswered runs and became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a single game. Baltimore led 3-0 after 3 innings with runs from Brian Roberts (2) and Nick Markakis. But the Rangers suddenly found their hitting touch and scored 5 runs in the 4th inning, 9 runs in the 6th inning, 10 runs in the 8th inning and 6 runs in the 9th inning. Tampa Bay Rays (3) @ (4) Philadelphia Phillies - The Phillies won their first World Series since 1980 by beating the Rays over 2 days of a rain-affected Game 5. The teams were tied at 2-2 when heavy rain and strong winds forced the game to be suspended and re-started 2 days later. Once the game re-started, the Phillies took a quick lead on an RBI single from Jenkins before Bruntlett sealed the win with a run in the 7th Ininng. Regular Season - Los Angeles Dodgers (2) @ (4) San Francisco Giants - In a niggily 3rd game of the series, the Giants won the game on a 2-run walk-off Home Run by Juan Uribe in the 10th inning. A combination of bad refereeing and physical play created a tense atmosphere that peaked with a bench-clearing episode in the 5th inning and the ejection of 2 managers for the Giants in 2 separate incidents. Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum had a good game but gave up the tieing run in the 8th inning. Regular Season - San Diego Padres (0) @ (8) San Francisco Giants - Giants starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez tossed the first no-hitter by a Giant since September 29, 1976 as the Giants beat the Padres 8-0. It was his first career no-hitter and came on Fathers Day with his Dad in attendance. The no-hitter by Sanchez went 110 pitches, 77 for strikes, and could have been a Perfect Game but for an error by 3rd-Baseman Juan Uribe in the 8th Inning. Little League World Series - Final - Chula Vista (California) (6) v (3) Taoyuan (Chinese Taipei) - California became the 5th straight team from the USA to win the World Series but needed a big come back from 3-0 down to beat Chinese Taipei. The Asia Pacific champions scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning but back-up pitcher Kiko Garcia shut them out the rest of the game. World Series Game 1 - Philadelphia Phillies (6) @ (1) New York Yankees - In the first ever World Series game at the new Yankee Stadium, the reigning champion Phillies silenced the crowd with an easy win.
