01/01/48 - Sun Bowl - Miami (OH) (13) v (12) Texas Tech - In Redskins coach Sid Gillman's last game, the team sent him out a winner with a tight win in El Paso. Although the Redskins dominated the game, the game was tied at 6-6 at the half and Miami only led 13-6 in the 4th quarter. Texas Tech scored on a 30 yard interception return late in the game, but the Redskins blocked the PAT to preserve their lead and ran out the clock to take the win. The Redksins accounted for 414 yards of Total Offense. Miami (OH) featured QB Mel Olix, RB's Ara Parseghian (1 TD run) and Paul Shoults (1 TD run) and OL Paul Dietzel. 01/01/54 - Gator Bowl - Texas Tech (35) v (13) Auburn - High-flying Texas Tech of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association survived a 1st half mauling by the Tigers to dominate the 2nd half and finish the season 11-1. The hero was Tech RB Bobby Cavasos (13-141-3) who had an MVP game including a 59 yard TD run. Auburn led 13-7 at the half through TD runs by RB Bobby Duke (4-37-1) and QB Vince Dooley (4-48-49-0 + 14-56-1) but the Tigers were shut-out in the 2nd half. 02/01/56 - Sun Bowl - Wyoming (21) v (14) Texas Tech - Unfancied Wyoming shocked the champions of the Border Conference, Texas Tech, with a come-from-behind win in El Paso. Tech led 14-7 in the 4th quarter when the Cowboys rallied, tieing the game on a TD pass then capitalising on a Texas Tech fumble on their own 4 yard line to run in the winning TD in the final minute. Texas Tech fumbled 5 times in the game, losing 3. Wyoming featured QB Larry Zowada (2 TD passes), RB Jim Crawford (18-103-0) and WR John Watts (1 TD catch). Texas Tech featured QB Don Williams and RB's Don Schmidt and Ronnie Herr (1 TD run). 21/09/63 - Washington State (7) @ (16) Texas Tech - Texas Tech opened their season with a win against the Cougars of the PAC-8 in a night game in Lubbock. After conceding the opening score of the game, the Red Raiders reeled off 16 unanswered points to win the game, including 3 FG's and a 44 yard interception return for a TD. 14/11/64 - Washington State (10) @ (28) Texas Tech - Texas Tech completed the double over the Cougars with another come-back win in Lubbock. The Cougars led 10-7 at the half but the Red Raiders found their rhythm in the 2nd half and scored 21 unanswered points to win the game. Texas Tech were led by a monster game from RB Donny Anderson (25-141-1 + 5 catches for 64 yards + 1 TD). Texas Tech also featured QB Tom Wilson (1 TD pass, 1 TD run), RB Jim Zanios (1 TD run) and WR/TE Jerry Don Balch (4 catches). 29/12/73 - Gator Bowl - Texas Tech (28) v (19) Tennessee - Texas Tech ended their season 11-1 and ranked in the top 10 with a big win over Tennessee from the SEC. The Red Raiders held a 14-3 lead at the half but the Vols fought back to 21-19 in the 4th quarter. Texas Tech then stepped up and finished off the Vols with a late drive that sealed the win. Tech were led by QB Joe Barnes and RB's Larry Isaac and James Mosley and they amassed 229 yards rushing. Barnes claimed MVP honours by also passing for 154 yards and 2 TD's (79 yards and 11 yards). 28/12/74 - Peach Bowl - Vanderbilt (6) v (6) Texas Tech - In a tight defensive game at the Peach Bowl, both teams battled to a tie. Neither team managed to score a Touchdown as turnovers and great defense forced the game into a Field Goal competition. After Vanderbilt took the lead with 5:11 to go in the game, Texas Tech built on a Peach Bowl record 54 yard kick-off return to set-up the game-tieing 35 yard FG with 2:27 left. Vanderbilt, who were playing in their 1st bowl game since 1955, were led by QB David Lee (5-14-60-0), RB Jamie O'Rourke (17-76-0) and DL Dennis Harrison (1 Blocked FG). Texas Tech were led by QB Tommy Duniven (3-8-35-0) and RB's Cliff Hoskins (13-116-0) and Larry Isaac (20-101-0). The Vanderbilt Defensive Co-Ordinator was Bill Parcells. 08/09/79 - USC (21) @ (7) Texas Tech - #1 ranked USC travelled to Lubbock and left with a hard-fought victory over the Red Raiders. The Trojans vaunted running game had a hard time against the Tech Defense in the 1st half and only led 7-0 at the break. But the Trojans picked it up in the 2nd half, led by FB Marcus Allen (20-105-1), and out-scored Tech by 2 TD's to 1 TD to take the win. USC also featured RB Charles White (10-39-0), who left the game injured in the 2nd Quarter, QB Paul McDonald (10-17-133-2), RB Michael Hayes (19-84-0), LB Chip Banks (1 interception) and DB's Dennis Smith and Ronnie Lott. 03/11/79 - Texas Tech (6) @ (14) Texas - Underdog Texas Tech nearly upset #8 ranked Texas in Austin but the Longhorns found just enough Offense to finish off the Red Raiders. The Texas Tech Offense, led by QB's Ron Reeves (before leaving in the 3rd quarter with a seperated shoulder) and Jim Hart + RB James Hadnot (25-117-0), ran the Wishbone to perfection but paid for an inability to score Touchdowns in the Red-zone. Texas held a slender 7-3 lead at the half and a 7-6 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter before a superb 4th quarter drive resulted in the game-clinching TD. Texas were led by 3 QB's : Donnie Little (2-6-20-0 + 11-48-0), Rick McIvor (3-10-68-1) and Herkie Walls (1-1-5-0) + RB's AJ Jones and Johnny Jones. 24/11/79 - Texas Tech (10) @ (14) Houston - The 8-1 Cougars of Houston staged a 2nd half comeback to beat the upset-minded Red Raiders. Texas Tech led 3-0 at the half, mainly on the running of FB James Hadnot (199 yds rushing + 1 TD) and the great defensive play of DL Gabriel Rivera and DB Tedd Watts. But the 2nd half saw the Cougars use their punishing ground game of TB Terald Clark (30-167-1) and backup QB Terry Elston + the dominating defense of DL Hosea Taylor and LB David Hodge to take control of the game and secure the win. Both teams ran the Option attack on Offense and Hadnot scored on a 61 yard TD run and Elston scored on a 72 yard TD run. 01/11/80 - Texas (20) @ (24) Texas Tech - Underdog Texas Tech jumped on Texas early and shocked the visitors with an upset win. Tech dominated the 1st quarter with Tech QB Ron Reeves (10-18-102-0) pacing the Offense to a 20-0 lead and the Defensive front seven, led by DL Gabriel Rivera (8 tackles, 1 fumble recovery), forced 5 sacks and shut down the Longhorns Offense. But a change at QB for Texas, Rick McIvor (11-24-189-1) in for Donnie Little (6-12-21-0), changed their fortunes and they ran off 20 uanswered points in the 2nd quarter to trail only 24-20. The 2nd half remained scoreless with both teams' Defenses dominating and the Red Raiders held on for the win. Texas Tech stunned the Longhorns with 171 yards rushing, led by RB's Anthony Hutchison (9-64-0) and Freddie Wells (6-34-0). The Tech Defense also featured LB's Terry Baer and Jeff McKinney and DB Ted Watts (34 yard interception return TD). The Longhorns also featured RB AJ "Jam" Jones (23-69-1), DL Kenneth Sims (12 tackles, 1 sack) and LB Doug Shankle (11 tackles). 23/10/82 - Texas Tech (3) @ (10) Washington - #1 ranked Washington overcame a dominating defensive performance by Texas Tech DL Gabriel Rivera to stay unbeaten, but needed 10 points in the 4th quarter to do so. In a tight defensive struggle, Rivera stod out, as he made 10 tackles, one sack and batted away four passes. The game remained scoreless until the 4th quarter when the Huskies answered a Tech FG with 10 unanswered points, as RB Jacque Robinson (35-203-1) scored the only TD and Chuck Nelson kicked the clinching FG. 24/09/83 - Texas Tech (26) @ (11) Baylor - Texas Tech upset the Bears in Waco with an inspired Offensive and Defensive performance. Led by QB Jim Hart (11-18-131-0 + 8-32-2), RB Timmy Smith (15-71-0) and WR Leonard Harris, the Red Raiders overcame an early Baylor FG to score 26 unanswered points and take the win. The Texas Tech defense, featuring DL Brad White and DB Stan David, also did their part by forcing 4 fumbles and 1 interception. Texas Tech held a 10-0 lead at the half but Texas responded in the 2nd half with 13 unanswered points including 2 FG's in the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter. Texas used a strong rushing attack (274 total yards + 3 TD's) and an opportunistic passing attack to run out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter before Texas Tech went for a change at QB, bringing on back-up Billy Joe Tolliver (9-22-202-1 + 178 yards rushing & 1 TD). Even though he ran and threw for his 1st career TD's, the deficit was too much to make up and Texas ran out easy winners. Both teams were tied at 13-13 at the start of the 2nd quarter before the Seminoles, led by QB Danny McManus (19-34-275-2) and RB Dexter Carter (14-60-0 + 4-24-0), pulled away to take the win. Tech was led by back-up QB Scott Toman (16-27-162-0) after starter Billy Joe Tolliver pulled out with an injury. 08/09/90 - Texas Tech (10) @ (17) Ohio State - Underdog Texas Tech gave 18th ranked Ohio State all they could handle in the season opener for both teams but a special teams TD finally saw the Buckeyes take the win. Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball, combining for 9 turnovers, and this gave Tech the chance to stay in the game and they led 10-3 in the 3rd quarter before the Buckeyes scored 2 unanswered TD's to take the win, with the winner coming from WR Jeff Graham on a 50 yard punt return TD. Led by Freshman QB Danny O'Neill (19-35-292-4) and a staunch Defense, the Ducks rolled up 456 yards of total Offense and restricted the Red Raiders to only 340 yards. After a tight 1st half that Oregon led 14-10, Texas Tech closed the gap to 14-13 before the Ducks reeled off 14 unanswered points to take the win. The Ducks Defense won the day, shutting down the Texas Tech rushing attack. In a game of few chances, both teams were tied 13-13 at the half and the winning FG came early in the 2nd half. Tech had a final chance to win the game in the closing minute but a last-gasp drive ended in an incompletion at the Ducks 5 yard line and Oregon held on for the emotional win. 11/10/08 - Nebraska (31) @ (37) Texas Tech - Unranked Nebraska played almost a perfect game against the #7 ranked Red Raiders, using a mix of run and pass to keep the ball away from the high-powered Tech Offense, but their one mistake ended up costing them the game. Nebraska forced overtime with 29 seconds left with a TD pass from QB Joe Ganz (36-44-349-2) to WR Todd Peterson (8-77-1) and then thought they had a chance to win as Texas Tech scored a TD but missed the PAT. But the Tech defense made the miss a non-factor by intercepting QB Ganz on their possession. 29/11/08 - Baylor (28) @ (35) Texas Tech - Texas Tech ended their season 11-1 with a come-from-behind win against the Bears. Baylor led 21-14 at the half through the play of QB Robert Griffin (12-15-91-1 + 18-99-2), but Tech QB Graham Harrell (41-50-309-2) and the Tech running game (56 yards, 3 TD's) brought the Red Raiders back with 3 TD's to win the game. Harrell was playing in his last home game and finished the game despite badly injuring his left hand in the 2nd quarter. The injury required surgery and 17 pins and 2 plates. 02/01/09 - Cotton Bowl - Mississippi (47) v (34) Texas Tech - In the last game at the Cotton Bowl stadium, Ole Miss upset #8 Texas Tech with a strong all-around game. On offense, QB Jevan Snead (18-29-292-3) and RB Dexter McCluster (14-97-1 + 6-83-0) had big games while the blitzing defense, led by DL Peria Jerry, put pressure on the Texas Tech Offense all game. Tech started the quicker as QB Graham Harrell (36-58-364-4) set the NCAA record for career TD's (134) and the defense chipped in with a 45 yard interception return TD. But the Rebels fought back with QB Snead leading the attack and went in at the break 24-21 up. The 2nd half was all Rebels as they started with a 65 yard interception return TD and held the Red Raiders in check. Texas Tech held only a 14-7 lead at the half after the Lobos defense managed to rattle Tech QB Taylor Potts (13-23-215-0) and knock him out of the game. Back-up QB Steven Sheffield (16-23-238-3) stepped in and led Tech to 21 points in the 3rd quarter to seal the win despite a 4th quarter rally from the Lobos. Tech was led on Offense by QB Taylor Potts (35-53-390-2) and RB Baron Batch (24-126-2) and on Defense by DL Brandon Sharpe (4 tackles, 2.5 sacks), LB Brian Duncan (6 tackles) and DB Jamar Wall (4 tackles, 1 interception). Oklahoma featured QB Landry Jones (18-35-262-1). The win gave Texas Tech coach Mike Leach his 83rd win, breaking the previous record held by Spike Dykes. 28/11/09 - Texas Tech (20) v (13) Baylor - Both teams faced off at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, and it was the Red Raiders that took the win although it needed a goal-line stand on the last play of the game to get it. The underdog Bears led 10-3 at the half with QB Blake Szymanski (22-35-238-0) leading the way and the defense, led by LB Joe Pawelek (12 tackles), keeping the Texas Tech offense away from any scoring opportunities. But in the 3rd quarter, Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts (31-49-269-2) threw 2 TD passes to put the Red Raiders in control and the Defense, led by Brandon Sharpe (6 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble), stopped the Bears on 4 plays from the Tech 10 yard line in the final seconds to take the win and book a place in the Alamo Bowl. Texas Tech opened their Ring of Honour with EJ Holub, Donny Anderson and Dave Parks remembered and the Offense put on a display that the Golden Palomino would have appreciated while the Defense shut down the Demons Offense in a display that Holub would have approved of. QB Seth Doege (23-34-199-1) and RB Eric Stephens (16-58-2) did the damage while the Defense held Northwestern State to only 84 yards of total Offense and had 3 sacks. 25/10/25 - Oklahoma State (0) @ (42) Texas Tech - #14 ranked Texas Tech rebounded from their 1st loss of the season with a shut-out of Oklahoma State at Jones Stadium. The Texas Tech defense had a huge game, holding the Cowboys to only 182 yards of total Offense.
