Qualifier - England (0) @ (1) Ukraine - In a raucous stadium in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine ended Englands undefeated run in the qualifying campaign with a tight 1-0 win. 2010
Group A - South Africa (1) v (1) Mexico - South Africa opened the World Cup in style with an entertaining draw with Mexico. After a goal-less 1st half, South African Siphiwe Tshabalala opened the scoring with a spectacular goal in the 55th minute but Mexico captain Rafael Márquez equalised with 11 minutes remaining to ruin the perfect start for the hosts (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Group A - Mexico (2) v (0) France - Mexico took a big step towards advancing to the knockout stages with a big win in Polokwane. 2nd half goals from Javier Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco, a penalty, did the damage and gave Mexico their 1st ever win over France. After the game, frustrated French striker Nicolas Anelka verbally assaulted coach Raymond Domenech and was thrown off the team (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Wilson/Bright, PAL)

Group A - France (1) v (2) South Africa - In the final group game for both teams, South Africa showed the greater desire and put in their best performance of the tournament. Goals from Bongani Khumalo and Katlego Mphela did the damage but a late French goal from Florent Malouda ruined any chance they had of making the Last 16. After the game, French coach Raymond Domenech refused to shake the hand of the South Africa coach (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Champion/Burley, PAL)

Group B - Argentina (4) v (1) South Korea - Argentina showed they meant business with a dominating win in Johannesburg. The hero for the Albiceleste was Striker Gonzalo Higuain, who scored the 1st hat-trick of the tournament, but he was ably supported by a big game from Lionel Messi. The South Korea goal came from Lee Chung-Yong (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Group C - England (1) v (1) USA - In the opening game of the World Cup for both teams, USA used a gift of a goal from England to earn a draw. England started fast, with a goal from Steven Gerrard in 4 minutes, but surrendered their lead with a bizarre goal on 43 minutes. A tame shot from Clint Dempsey squirmed out of the grasp of goalkeeper Robert Green and rolled over the line for the equaliser. Both teams had their chances in the 2nd half but couldn't find the breakthrough (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Beglin, PAL)

Group C - Slovenia (2) v (2) USA - The USA completed a remarkable fightback to earn a draw and stay in the hunt for a top 2 finish in the group. Slovenia started stronger and were 2-0 up at the half with goals from Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic. But the USA dominated the 2nd half and rescued a point with goals from Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley. The USA should have taken the win but a goal with 3 minutes remaining was controversially disallowed (10, Occasional picture stutter during post-game but game action OK, 2 Discs, BBC - Wilson/Keown, PAL)

Group C - England (0) v (0) Algeria - In an awful game for England, both teams played out a draw that kept both teams in the hunt for a top 2 finish in the group. Algeria used a strong midfield performance to knock England out of their rhythm but neither team could find a deciding goal. England featured Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and David James in goal. Algeria were led by Karim Ziani (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Townsend, PAL)

Group C - Slovenia (0) v (1) England - England needed a win to make the last 16, and put in their best performance to ease into the knockout rounds. A 1st half goal from Jermain Defoe was enough but England created more chances and dominated possession throughout the game. England finished 2nd in the group as a result of a last minute goal in the other game in the group (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Mowbray/Lawrenson, PAL)

Group C - USA (1) v (0) Algeria - In dramatic fashion, USA clinched 1st place in their group with a last minute goal. Landon Donovan was the hero, latching onto a rebound off of the keeper and smashing the ball home to send USA into the Last 16 for the second tournament in row (2 versions : 10, 2 Discs, ESPN - Darke/Harkes, NTSC / 9, 2 Discs, BBC - Bower/Keown, PAL)

Group F - New Zealand (1) v (1) Slovakia - In a historic day in Rustenburg, both teams earned their 1st ever World Cup points, with New Zealand snatching a draw with a last second equalising goal. Slovakia took the lead in the 50th minute with a goal from Robert Vittek and looked to be taking all the points when defender Winston Reid headed in the equaliser in the 93rd minute (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Brotherton/Keown, PAL)

Group F - Italy (1) v (1) New Zealand - New Zealand continued their great run with a hard-earned draw against the current Champions. A goal from Shane Smeltz after only 7 minutes gave the All Whites a shock lead but the Italians levelled the scores with a penalty from Vincenzo Iaquinta in the 29th minute. Despite racking up 23 shots on goal to 3 from New Zealand, Italy were unable to take score the winner and the points were shared (9, Slight pixellation, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Coleman, PAL)

Group F - Slovakia (3) v (2) Italy - In one of the shocks of the tournament, the Champions were knocked out of the competition by a team making their debut at the World Cup. Slovakia held a 2-0 lead coming into the final 10 minutes with goals from Robert Vittek (2) before Italy attempted a comeback. But goals from and Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella were off-set by a clinching goal from Kamil Kopunek and the Champions crashed out (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Group G - Brazil (2) v (1) North Korea - Brazil opened their campaign with a solid win against a hard-working North Korean team, in their 1st Finals since 1966. Goals from Maicon, a brilliant shot from a tight angle, and Elano finally broke down the stubborn North Koreans, who got their reward with a late goal from Ji Yun-Nam (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Coleman, PAL)

Group G - Brazil (3) v (1) Ivory Coast - A tight and feisty game ended in another win for Brazil, but Ivory Coast pushed them all the way. Goals from Luis Fabiano (2) and Elano off-set a goal from Didier Drogba but the talking point was when Brazilian midfielder Kaka was sent off late in the game (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Pearce/Lawrenson, PAL)

Group G - Portugal (7) v (0) North Korea - In the rain of Cape Town, Portugal overwhelmed North Korea with a 6 goal blitz in the 2nd half to underline their credentials for the tournament. The 7 goals came from 6 different players : Raul Meireles, Simao, Hugo Almeida, Tiago (2), Liedson and Ronaldo (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Brotherton/McCarthy, PAL)

Group H - Switzerland (1) v (0) Spain - In a big upset, the Swiss recorded their 1st ever win over the tournament favourites, Spain. A 2nd half goal from Gelson Fernandes was enought to take the win despite heavy pressure in the 2nd half. The Spanish, especially David Villa, created chances but were unable to score. The loss was only Spain's 2nd in 48 games (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Pearce/McCarthy, PAL)

Last 16 - Ghana (2) v (1) USA - The lone African team left in the tournament pulled out an Extra-Time win to advance to the Quarter Final. A 5th minute goal from Kevin Prince Boateng was equalised in the 2nd half by a Landon Donovan penalty but an Asamoah Gyan goal in Extra-time proved too much for the USA to overcome (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Last 16 - England (1) v (4) Germany - England crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of their old enemy as the pace of the young German side inflicted on England their worst ever defeat at the World Cup. Germany took a 2-0 lead with goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski before a crazy minute saw England get a goal back with a Matt Upson header and then controversially were not awarded a goal when a Frank Lampard shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced behind the line before bouncing out. England pressed in the 2nd half for the equaliser but Germany counter-attacked to perfection and 2 goals from Thomas Muller ended the game (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Mowbray/Lawrenson, PAL)

Last 16 - Argentina (3) v (1) Mexico - Argentina powered into the Quarter Finals with a big win over the Mexicans. Goals from Carlos Tevez (2), his first a controversial goal and his 2nd an awesome strike from the edge of the penalty area, and Gonzalo Higuain did the damage. The first goal from Tevez was clearly off-side but the linesman missed the call only to be embarrassed as the in-stadium video replay showed the mistake he made. As the teams left the field at half-time, both teams scuffled on the side-line. The lone Mexico goal was a great finish from Javier Hernandez (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Wilson/Bright, PAL)

Quarter Final - Netherlands (2) v (1) Brazil - The favourites Brazil crashed out in spectacular fashion as the Netherlands came back from an early deficit to reach the Semi-Finals. Brazil dominated the 1st half and led 1-0 at the break with a goal from Robinho but the game turned in a 20 minute spell in the middle of the 2nd half when Wesley Sneijder scored 2 goals and Brazil had a man sent off. Brazil tried to find the equaliser but the Dutch held on for their first win over Brazil since 1974. 2 days later, Brazilian coach Dunga was sacked (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Burley, PAL)

Quarter Final - Uruguay (1) v (1) Ghana - The Ghana dream ended in Johannesburg in dramatic fashion as Uruguay used a penalty shootout to reach the Semi-Finals. Ghana had a chance to claim the semi-final spot with the last kick of Extra-Time as Uruguay striker Luis Suarez handled on the line to give the Black Stars a penalty. But Asamoah Gyan hit the bar with the kick and both teams had to settle the game in a penalty shootout. Uruguay held their nerve, saving 2 kicks and went through 4-2 (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Beglin, PAL)

Quarter Final - Argentina (0) v (4) Germany - In a big upset, the Germans shocked one of the favourites with a big win. Goals from Thomas Muller, Miroslav Klose (2) and Arne Friedrich won the game but the defense, led by captain Phillip Lahm, kept star strikers Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi quiet and paved the way for the upset. The 2 goals by Klose put him 1 goal behind Ronaldo as the top goal-scorer in World Cup Finals history (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Wilson/Lawrenson, PAL)

Quarter Final - Spain (1) v (0) Paraguay - Spain clinched a place in their 1st ever World Cup Semi-Final with a tight win at Ellis Park. A goal from David Villa with 7 minutes remaining did the damage but the game will be remembered for an amazing 2 minutes in the 2nd half when Paraguay and Spain both missed penalties (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Pearce/Bright, PAL)

Semi-Final - Uruguay (2) v (3) Netherlands - The Dutch continued their unbeaten streak (25 games) with a strong win against the Uruguayans. An early Dutch goal from Giovanni Van Bronckorst, a scorcher from 41 yards, was cancelled out by a long range effort from Diego Forlan but the Dutch took control in the 2nd half with goals from Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben. An injury time goal from Uruguay gave them hope but there wasn't enough time for a combeack and the Dutch held on for the win and their 1st Finals appearance since 1978 (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley, PAL)

Semi-Final - Spain (1) v (0) Germany - European Champions Spain finally reached their 1st ever World Cup Final with a big win over the Tournaments form team. A 2nd half goal from defender Carlos Puyol finally broke the deadlock and the Spanish kept the Germans at bay to take the win (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Mowbray/Lawrenson, PAL)

3rd Place Playoff - Uruguay (2) v (3) Germany - On an historic night in Port Elizabeth, Germany came from behind to take the bronze medal. The 3rd place meant they finished in the top 3 in 3 successive tournaments, the only team ever to do so. Germany went 1-0 up, then 2-1 down before scoring the winner with 8 minutes remaining. The Germany goals came from Thomas Muller, Marcel Jansen and Sami Khedira. The Uruguay goals came from Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Burley, PAL)

Final - Netherlands (0) v (1) Spain - Spain finally won their 1st ever World Cup, but needed extra-time to do it. In a very physical game with plenty of bad tackles, both teams had chances to win the game in normal time, with Arjen Robben and Sergio Ramos coming closest for Holland and Spain respectively. But the game went to extra-time where Holland were reduced to 10 men when John Heitinga was sent off and Spain finally won with a goal from Andres Iniesta with 3 minutes left in the game. BBC version includes 25 minutes of the Spanish teams homecoming parade as shown on SKY sports news (2 versions ; 10, 3 Discs, BBC - Mowbray/Lawrenson, PAL / 10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Burley, PAL)
