SOCCER - WORLD CUP - 2002

JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA

2001
Qualifier - England (5) @ (1) Germany - England had suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat in the last ever game at Wembley to Germany and needed a win in Munich to keep pace with the group leaders for qualification to the World Cup Finals. The game started terribly for England as Carsten Jancker scored within 5 minutes but England started to get going and on 13 minutes Owen scored. Both teams then settled down but deep in 1st Half injury time Steven Gerrard hit a low drive into the bottom corner and England had the lead. 3 minutes into the 2nd half, England scored again as Michael Owen scored his 2nd goal. Owen completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute and Emile Heskey ended the rout with the 5th goal on 74 minutes. The home loss was only the 2nd ever in Germany's World Cup Qualification history (9, Original broadcast, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Brooking, PAL)

Qualifier -
Greece (2) @ (2) England - Knowing an England draw and a Germany draw would put England in the World Cup finals, David Beckham worked tirelessly to keep the English from losing at Old Trafford. 2 minutes into injury time and 2-1 down, Beckham got a free-kick on the edge of the area. He cooly rifled the shot home and England were through as the Germans could only draw. (8, 1 Disc, BBC - Motson/Brooking, PAL)
