SOCCER - WORLD CUP - 1982
SPAIN
Qualifier - England (3) @ (1) Hungary - England were reeling from a defeat at Norway and needed to beat the Hungarians to qualify for the World Cup finals. Goals from Kevin Keegan and Trevor Brooking (2) did the job and put England back on track. Brooking's 2nd goal was a fantastic shot from the edge of the penalty area that stuck in the stanchion (8, 1 Disc, ITV - Moore/Bond, PAL)
1982
Quarter Final - Italy (3) v (2) Brazil - Brazil again were favourites to win the Cup but they hadn't reckoned on Paolo Rossi, the Italian centre-forward, who scored a sensational hat-trick. The Brazilians were beaten and Italy were in the Semi-Final (2 versions : 10, 2009 ESPN Classic re-broadcast, 2 Discs, ITV - Helm, PAL / 8, Italian Commentary, 2 Discs, RAI - Unknown, PAL)
Semi-Final - West Germany (3) v (3) France - In the most exciting World Cup game ever, West Germany and France battled into Extra-Time and then Penalties. Both teams started strong in the shoot-out before Stielike missed for Germany. But German goalkeeper Schumacher (controversially still on the field after almost killing Patrick Battiston in the 2nd half with a flying tackle but getting away with it) blocked the penalties of Six and Bossis to allow Hrubesch to score the decider and send West Germany to the Final (8, Transfer from official VHS with commentary from Martin Tyler, 3 Discs, PAL)
