1980/81
Quarter Final, 1st Leg - Ipswich Town (4) @ (1) St.Etienne - In arguably the clubs best ever match, Ipswich upset a strong St.Etienne team to take the inside track to the semi-final. Ipswich conceded an early goal to Johnny Rep after 17 minutes but then took control of the game and went in at the half 1-1 thanks to a Paul Mariner equaliser. Ipswich then dominated the 2nd half and added 3 more goals with Arnold Muhren, Paul Mariner and Paul Wark all finding the net. Ipswich were coached by Bobby Robson and also featured Alan Brazil, Mick Mills and Frans Thijssen. St.Etienne also featured Michel Platini, Jean-Francois Larios, Patrick Battiston and Laurent Paganelli (8, Occasional picture drop-out - Missing last few seconds but no scoring missed, French Commentary, 1 Disc, PAL)

1981/82
2nd Round, 1st Leg -
Sporting Lisbon (4) @ (2) Southampton - In a bizarre game, Sporting scored 3 1st half goals on only 4 attempts on goal before Southampton mounted a furious 2nd half comeback that fell just short. Diabolical defending allowed Jordao and Fernandes to score and an own goal from Holmes put Southampton in a hole. But goals in the 2nd half from Kevin Keegan (a penalty) and from Mick Channon gave the Saints hope before an injury time 4th goal from Frenandes effectively knocked Southampton out of the UEFA cup. Southampton also featured Alan Ball and Chris Nicholl (9, 25 mins hi-lites - ESPN classic re-broadcast, 1 Disc, BBC - Davies, PAL)

1995/96
Final, 2nd Leg -
Bayern Munich (3) @ (1) Bordeaux - Bayern secured the Cup with a resounding 5-1 aggregate win over Bordeaux.. The Bayern goals were scored by Mehmet Scholl, Igor Kostadinov and Jurgen Klinsmann. Bayern also featured Lothar Matthaus, Oliver Khan and Markus Babbel. Bordeaux featured Bixente Lizarazu, Christophe Dugarry, Richard Witschge and  Zinedine Zidane, all of who were playing their final games for the club. Zidane moved on to Juventus (8, German Commentary, 1 Disc, SAT1 - Unknown, PAL)

2000/01
Final - Liverpool (5) v (4) Deportivo Alaves - In the wildest UEFA cup final ever, Liverpool won on a "Golden Goal" own goal in extra-time. Alaves fought back from a 3-1 deficit to force extra-time with an 89th minute equaliser. Liverpool featured Steven Gerrard, Gary McAllister, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen. Alaves featured Jordi Cruyff, Javi Moreno and Ivan Alonso (8, 3 Discs, ITV - Davies/Brooking, PAL)

2005/06
1st Round, 1st Leg - Lokomotiv Plovdiv (1) @ (2) Bolton Wanderers - Bolton's 1st ever European cup competition match was a nervy affair but Bolton sealed the home win with a Javier Borgetti goal in the last minute (8, 1 Disc, CH5 - Helm/Butcher, PAL)

1st Round, 2nd Leg -
Bolton Wanderers (2) @ (1) Lokomotiv Plovdiv
- Bolton won through to the group stage with a hard-fought away win. A goal from Kevin Nolan with 4 minutes left sealed the win (8, 1 Disc, CH5 - Helm/Nevin, PAL)

Quarter Final, 2nd Leg -
FC Basel (1) @ (4) Middlesbrough
- Boro were 2-0 down from the 1st leg but, despite conceding an early goal, fought back to win 4-3 on aggregate with a last minute goal from Massimo Maccarone (9, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Semi-Final, 2nd Leg -
Steaua Bucharest (2) @ (4) Middlesbrough
- In a repeat of the Quarter Final, Boro were 1-0 down from the 1st leg but, despite conceding 2 early goals, fought back to win 4-3 on aggregate with a last minute goal from Massimo Maccarone (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Final -
Sevilla (4) v (0) Middlesbrough - In Boro coach Steve McLarens's last game before taking over as England coach, he saw his team never get out of 1st gear as the Spanish team dominated possession and embarrased Boro with great movement and attacking skill. Boro were a goal down from Fabiano at the half and, despite putting on 4 strikers, failed to claw the game back. Boro conceded 3 more goals in the last 12 minutes from Maresca (2) and Kanoute to win their 1st ever European trophy (9, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Pleat, PAL)


2006/07
Final - Sevilla (2) v (2) Espanyol - In the driving rain of Glasgow, Sevilla retained their title with a close win on penalties over their compatriots from Spain. Espanyol forced a shoot-out with an equalising goal 5 minutes from the end of extra-time but couldn't beat 'keeper Palop from the spot. Sevilla became only the 2nd team to reatin the UEFA Cup (9, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Pleat, PAL)

2007/08
Group G - Getafe (2) @ (1) Tottenham Hotspur - Getafe secured their 1st Group win with a comeback from a 1-0 deficit. Spurs opened the scoring with a Jermain Defoe goal but Getafe equalised within 2 minutes and scored the winner with 20 minutes to go. The game will be remembered for Spurs manager Martin Jol being sensationally sacked at half-time of the game (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Pleat, PAL)

Semi-Final, 2nd Leg -
Bayern Munich (0) @ (4) Zenit St.Petersburg
- Zenit reached their first ever European Final by handing Bayern their worst ever European defeat. Goals from Pogrebniak (2), Zyryanov and Faitzulin did the damage although Pogrebniak picked up a 2nd yellow card and was suspended form the final. The game marked the last European game for Bayern Keeper Oliver Kahn (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Champion/Stone, PAL)

Semi-Final, 2nd Leg -
Rangers (0) @ (0) Fiorentina
- Rangers advanced to their first European final since 1972 with a penalty shoout-out win over favoured Fiorentina. Rangers survived heavy pressure and a man sent-off to force penalties and, despite having their first kick saved, saved 2 of their own and won the game (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Final -
Zenit St.Petersburg (2) v (0) Rangers
- Zenit won their first ever European Trophy with 2 goals in the second half from Denisov and Zyryanov. Zenit dominated possession and opportunities and made the break-through on 72 minutes when Man-of-the-Match Andrei Arshavin put Denisov in (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

2008/09

1st Round, 1st Leg -
Vitoria Guimaraes (0) @ (2) Portsmouth - Portsmouth got off to a winning start in their 1st ever European game. Goals from Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe were enough to win the game. Guimaraes goalkeeper Nilson had a great game and both teams also missed a penalty (10, 2 Discs, CH5 - Jones/Mills, PAL)

1st Round, 2nd Leg -
Portsmouth (2) v (2) Vitoria Guimaraes
- Porstmouth survived an early onslaught that produced 2 goals for Guimaraes and took the game into extra-time where Peter Crouch settled the tie with 2 goals (10, 2 Discs, CH5 - Jones/Houghton, PAL)

Group A -
FC Twente (2) @ (3) Manchester City
- FC Twente coach Steve McLaren returned to England on the anniversary of his sacking as England manager and his team played their part in a 2nd half shootout. City took a 2nd minute lead through Shaun Wright-Phillips but Twente equalised on 17 minutes. The 2nd half started well for City as Robinho scored with a sweet curling shot and Benjani followed up with a goal with his 1st touch as substitute. But Twente finished strong, clawing back a goal and then missing an open goal in the final minute that would have secured a draw (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Group E -
AC Milan (2) @ (2) Portsmouth
- On a cold and rainy night in Portsmouth, AC Milan snatched a result when they scored 2 goals in the final 6 minutes for a draw. Portsmouth outplayed AC Milan throughout the game and went 2-0 up with goals from Younis Kaboul and Kanu. But Ronaldinho came off the bench to score with a scorching free-kick to give Milan a sniff before Inzaghi benefitted from a desperate punt into the penalty area to score the equalizer 2 minutes into injury time (10, 2 Discs, CH5 - Woods/Collymore, PAL)

Last 32, 1st Leg -
Manchester City (2) @ (2) FC Copenhagen
- Amidst snow flurries and the cold, City fielded a full strength side and scored 2 away goals but conceded a late equaliser in the 1st knockout round. City's goals came from Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland but 2nd half goals from Ailton Almeida and Martin Vingaard gave the home side hope for the away leg. The last Copenhagen goal came in the 90th minute. City also featured Robinho, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Craig Bellamy (10, 1 Disc, BBC - Wilson/Lawrenson, PAL)

Last 32, 2nd Leg -
FC Copenhagen (0) @ (2) Manchester City
- On a soggy field, City overcame a sluggish first half to progress to the next round with a 4-2 aggregate win. The stars for City were Craig Bellamy, who scored 2 goals late in the 2nd half, and Robinho, who set up 1 goal and hit the post twice (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Last 16, 1st Leg -
Aalborg (0) @ (2) Manchester City
- City took control of the Quarter Final with a good attacking display that had Aalborg on the back foot. 1st half goals from Felipe Caicedo and Shaun Wright-Phillips settled the 1st leg early with Robinho and Stephen Ireland pulling the strings in the final third (10, Coverage starts just before kick-off, 1 Disc, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Last 16, 2nd Leg -
Manchester City (0) @ (2) Aalborg
- City advanced to the Quarter Finals with a penalty shootout win in Denmark. City played to keep a clean-sheet and advance on the back of their 2-0 lead from the 1st leg but constant 2nd half pressure from Aalborg finally resulted in 2 goals in the final 5 minutes of the game. Neither team found the winner in Extra-Time so the game went to penalties were City goalkeeper Shay Given ended up the hero, saving 2 spot kicks. City featured Robinho, who hit the crossbar on a rare City attack, and Shaun Wright-Phillips (10, 2 Discs, CH5 - Woods/Mills, PAL)

Quarter Final, 1st Leg -
Manchester City (1) @ (3) Hamburg
- Hamburg survived an early goal from City to take a 2 goal lead into the 2nd Leg. City scored in 35 seconds with a goal from Stephen Ireland but Hamburg regrouped and forced City goalkeeper Shay Given into several great saves before finally equalising with a 9th minute goal from Joris Mathijsen. Hamburg then laid siege to the City goal with Piotr Trochowski and Ivica Olic running the game. Further goals from Trochowski (a penalty) and Jose Paolo Guerrero extended their lead and set them up to qualify for the semi-final. Quarter Final, 2nd Leg -
Hamburg (1) @ (2) Manchester City
- City's run in the UEFA cup finally ended as they failed to overturn a 3-1 deficit from the 1st leg. An early goal from Guerrero put Hamburg into an early lead but goals from Elano (a penalty) and Caicedo gave City hope of at least forcing extra-time. City hit the woodwork twice and had numerous chances to score but the German side held on to advance to the semi-final. Manchester City also featured Robinho but were missing Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips to injury. Hamburg featured Ivica Olic and Piotr Trochowski (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Pleat, PAL)

Semi-Final, 2nd Leg -
Dynamo Kiev (1) @ (2) Shakhtar Donetsk
- In an all-Ukranian semi-final, it was Shakhtar that rode a late winner to claim a place in their 1st ever European Final. Goals from Brazilians Jadson and Ilsinho, his coming in the 88th minute, offset a 2nd half goal from Bangoura that looked to have forced extra-time (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Holland, PAL)

Semi-Final, 2nd Leg -
Werder Bremen (3) @ (2) Hamburg
- An all-German semi-final went the way of Bremen as they recovered from an early 1 goal deficit to advance to the Final. Ivica Olic put Hamburg into a 1-0 lead but Diego, Pizzaro and Baumann answered to put Bremen in the driver seat. A late Olic goal made for a nervous finish but Bremen held on for the win (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)

Final -
Shakhtar Donetsk (2) v (1) Werder Bremen - In the last ever UEFA cup Final, Shakhtar Donetsk claimed their first ever European Trophy. The game went into extra-time after a Luiz Adriano goal for Donetsk was cancelled out by a Bremen goal by Naldo. Shakthar then got the breathrough goal from Jadson and hung on for the win. Shakhtar also featured Darijo Srna, Fernandinho, Ilsinho and Willian. Bremen also featured Torsten Frings, Frank Baumann and Claudio Pizarro (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)
