SOCCER - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

EURO 2000 - BELGIUM / NETHERLANDS

FINALS
Group A - England (1) v (0) Germany - England finally beat Germany in a meaningful game for the first time in 34 years and set themselves up for qualification to the next round. A 2nd half goal from Alan Shearer did the damage and keeper David Seaman kept the Germans at bay at the other end. England also featured David Beckham, Paul Ince, Dennis Wise and Michael Owen. Germany also featured Lothar Matthaus, Dieter Hamann, Christian Ziege and keeper Oliver Kahn (8, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Brooking, PAL)

Group A - England (2) v (3) Romania - England needed only to draw to guarantee a trip to the next round. Shearer and Owen off-set an early Romanian goal to give England a half-time lead but a goal-keeping error from Nigel Martyn allowed the equaliser and then, in the last minute, Phil Neville conceded a penalty and England were out. This was Alan Shearer's last game for England (9, 1 Disc, BBC - Davies/Lawrenson, PAL)

Group C - Spain (4) v (3) Yugoslavia - One of the greatest European Championship games ever. With Norway earning a draw against Slovenia, Spain needed to beat Yugoslavia to progress to the next round. And with Spain 3-2 down going into injury time it looked all over for Spain. But Gaizka Mendieta scored from the penalty spot and, with the last kick of the game, Alfonso scrambled in the winning goal. Despite the loss, Yugoslavia also qualified, at the expense of Norway (2 versions : 9, Original Broadcast - Full Game, 1 Disc, BBC - Motson/Lawrenson, PAL / 9, 2020 re-broadcast - Full Game but no Half-Time, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Lawrenson, PAL)

Quarter Final - Spain (1) v (2) France - France remained on course for their second major championship trophy in a row with a comfortable win over the Spanish at the Jan Breydelstadion in Bruges. A competitive 1st half ended with France in front 2-1 at the break. The 2nd half saw France content to protect the lead but they nearly paid for their decision when, with a minute to play, France conceded a penalty. Unbelievably star striker Raul blazed the kick over the crossbar and France held on for the win and a spot in the Semi-Final. The France goals came from Zinedine Zidane, who had a great game, and Youri Djorkaeff. The Spain goal came from a penalty from Gaizka Mendieta. France also featured Marcel Desailly, Laurent Blanc, Patrick Vieira, Didier Deschamps and Thierry Henry. Spain also featured Abelardo, Pep Guardiola and Pedro Munitis (9, 2020 re-broadcast - Full Game, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Lawrenson, PAL)

Semi-Final - France (2) v (1) Portugal - World champions France faced a Portugal side with Luis Figo in his prime. Portugal took the lead through Nuno Gomes but a 2nd half Thierry Henry goal sent the game into extra-time. With 3 minutes left, France were awarded a "Golden Goal" penalty and Zidane converted to put France in the final (2 versions : 9, 2020 re-broadcast - Full Game but no Half-Time, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Lawrenson, PAL / 9, Full Game, 1 Disc, ITV - Tyldesley/Atkinson, PAL)

Final - France (2) v (1) Italy - World Cup holders France were looking for the World and European double. Italy took the lead and seemed destined for the win but France scored in the 4th minute of injury time and, in extra-time, David Trezeguet thumped home a "Golden Goal" volley to give the French the European Championship (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Motson/Lawrenson, PAL)
