SOCCER - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
EURO 1968 - ITALY
1967
Qualifier - Scotland (3) @ (2) England - Scotland visited Wembley and inflicted the first defeat on the English in 19 games. Goals from Denis Law, Robert Lennox and Jim McCalliog did the damage and, despite late goals from Jack Charlton and Geoff Hurst, the Scots held on to win (8, Black and White, 1 Disc, BBC - Wolstenholme/Barnes, PAL)
Qualifier - Scotland (0) @ (1) Ireland - In arguably George Best's greatest game for his country, Ireland upset a strong Scotland team to stay in the hunt for qualification to the European Championships. Scotland started strong but every time Ireland attacked, with George Best in the thick of the action, they looked like scoring. The goal game in the 70th minute from Dave Clements and the Irish should have had a second moments later but missed a penalty. The miss didn't make a difference as the Irish held on to win. Ireland also featured Pat Jennings in goal and striker Derek Dougan. Scotland were led by John Grieg and Dennis Law (7, Black and White 27 minutes hi-lites, 1 Disc, BBC - Wolstenholme, NTSC)
