FA Cup Final - West Ham United (3) v (2) Preston North End - West Ham were in their 1st cup final of the modern era and were faced against a stout Preston team featuring a very young Howard Kendall. West Ham were trailing 2-1 at the half and Preston were holding on when Geoff Hurst scored in the 89th minute. FA Cup Final - Liverpool (2) v (1) Leeds United - Liverpool won their 1st ever FA Cup trophy against a feisty Leeds team that took them to extra-time. All the goals came in extra-time. Liverpool scored 1st with Roger Hunt but Billy Bremner equalised moments later. FA Cup Final - Everton (3) v (2) Sheffield Wednesday - In arguably the most exciting FA Cup final ever, Everton fought back from a 2-0 deficit in the 2nd half to win the Cup. Everton midfielder Mike Trebilcock scored 2 goals in 5 minutes to tie the game before Mike Temple scored the winner with 16 minutes left. 1967/68
Charity Shield - Manchester United (3) v (3) Tottenham Hotspur - The traditional season opener at a rainy Old Trafford produced a goal-fest but neither team could find a winner so the trophy was shared. The score was 2-2 at the half with Spurs scoring the opening 2 goals from Jimmy Robertson and a bizarre goal from Goalkeeper Pat Jennings. Jennings let fly a long goal-kick that bounced in the United penalty area and over the head of United keeper Alex Stepney for a goal. United countered with 2 goals from Bobby Charlton before the break. A quieter 2nd half saw off-setting goals from Frank Saul and Dennis Law that determined the draw. Spurs also featured Joe Kinnear, Alan Mullery, Jimmy Greaves and Terry Venables. FA Cup 3rd Round - Manchester United (3) @ (1) Exeter City - European Champions United survived a possible upset to 4th Division Exeter with a big 2nd half. The teams were tied at 1-1 at the half but United dominated the 2nd half and scored 2 unanswered goals to take the win. The Exeter goal came from a great header from Alan Banks. The United goals came from John Fitzpatrick, George Best and Brian Kidd. United also featured Bobby Charlton and Denis Law. FA Cup Final - Leicester City (0) v (1) Manchester City - Favourites Manchester City won their 4th FA Cup with a tight win against Leicester at Wembley Stadium. Led by Man-of-the Match Allan Clarke, Leicester had the better of the chances but ultimately paid for poor finishing as City converted one of the few clear chances they had when Neil Young blasted home from a Mike Summerbee cross in the 24th minute. City also featured an all-English team containing Colin Bell and Francis Lee. League Cup Semi-Final, 1st Leg - Manchester United (1) @ (2) Manchester City - City took the advantage in the race for the final with a tight win at Maine Road. The score at the half was 1-1 with a City goal from Colin Bell cancelled out by a goal from Bobby Charlton. In the 2nd half City took the lead with a penalty from Francis Lee that they defended to the end although George Best had a late chance to earn a draw but his free-kick was pushed around the post by City keeper Joe Corrigan. League Cup Semi-Final, 2nd Leg - Manchester City (2) @ (2) Manchester United - City booked a place in their 1st Cup Final since 1956 with a late goal at Old Trafford. City led 2-1 from the 1st leg and they took a 3-1 aggregate lead when Ian Bowyer poked in a rebound in the 1st half. United weren't finished and replied with 2 goals from Dennis Law and Paul Edwards to level the aggregate scores at 3-3 and extra-time looked on the cards. But 8 minutes from the end, Mike Summerbee reacted quickest to a thunderous free-kick from Francis Lee that was parried by United keeper Alex Stepney and the tie was won. FA Cup Semi-Final - Chelsea (5) v (1) Watford - In a full-blooded tie at White Hart Lane, First Division Chelsea booked a place in the Final with 2nd half demolition of Second Division Watford. The underdog Hornets held the Blues to a 1-1 tie at the half but an early 2nd half goal triggered an avalanche of Chelsea attacks and 3 further goals claimed the win. The Chelsea goals came from David Webb, Peter Osgood, Peter Hutchinson and Ian Houseman. FA Cup Final - Chelsea (2) v (2) Leeds United - On a terrible Wembly pitch, both teams fought to draw and forced a replay, the 1st since 1912. Leeds looked to have the game won when Allan Clarke scored with 6 minute left but 2 minutes later Ian Hutchinson equalised. Leeds featured Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton and Eddie Gray. FA Cup Final Replay - Chelsea (2) v (1) Leeds United - In the "Battle of Old Trafford", Chelsea showed just enough class to beat Leeds in a very physical game. Charlton, Bremner and Giles battled hard with McCreadie and Harris with head-butts and punches being exchanged.
