FA Cup 1st Round - Replay - Brighton (2) @ (2) Woking - On a cold night in Surrey, League One leaders Brighton were given a real scare by a team 95 places below them in the league before using their collective experience to win out in the penalty shootout. The game ended 1-1 and went to extra-time where both teams scored again to force a penalty shootout. Woking failed to score any of their penalties and Brighton went through to the next round. The Brighton goals came from Matt Sparrow and Elliott Bennett and the Woking goals came from Gordon Greer and Ola Sagbanmu. FA Cup 2nd Round - Replay - Brighton (4) @ (0) FC United of Manchester - On a brutally cold night in Bury, Brighton ended FC United's dream run with a lesson in finishing. Goals from Francisco Sandaza, Inigo Calderon, Elliott Bennett and Matthew Sparrow did the damage but FC United didn't help their cause, allowing a last second goal before the break to go 2-0 down and then missing a penalty after the break that would have made the score 2-1. FA Cup 3rd Round - Leeds (1) @ (1) Arsenal - Leeds almost claimed a Premiership scalp for the 2nd year in a row but Arsenal rescued the game with a last minute goal to force a replay. After a scoreless 1st half, Leeds took the lead with a penalty from Robert Snodgrass before Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas equalised in the 90th minute with a penalty of his own. FA Cup 4th Round - Tottenham Hotspur (0) @ (4) Fulham - Fulham shocked Spurs with a 1st half goal blitz to record their 1st ever FA Cup win over their London neighbours. The goals came from Danny Murphy (2 penalties), Breda Hangeland and Moussa Dembele. FA Cup 5th Round - Crawley Town (0) @ (1) Manchester United - Non-League Crawley Town dominated an under-strength United team but failed to convert their chances and paid for it, as United rode a 1st half goal by Wes Brown into the next round. Crawley had 1 last chance to secure a replay in the final minutes but a goal-bound header bounced off the cross-bar and the chance was lost. FA Cup 5th Round - Burnley (1) @ (5) West Ham - On Monday Night football, West Ham advanced to the Quarter Finals with a big win against a strong Burnley team. The Hammers led 1-0 at the half with a goal on his debut from Thomas Hitzlsberger and then effectively ended the game as a contest with 2 goals in the opening 5 minutes of the 2nd half from Carlton Cole. FA Cup Semi-Final - Manchester City (1) v (0) Manchester United - In the 1st Manchester Derby to be played at Wembley Stadium, the Blue half of Manchester ended the Reds treble dreams with a big win. A 2nd half goal from YaYa Toure gave City the edge which they defended until the end. City were helped by the dismissal of Paul Scholes with 17 minutes left but United suffered more from the absence of Wayne Rooney through suspension. City were missing Carlos Tevez due to injury. FA Cup Semi-Final - Stoke City (5) v (0) Bolton Wanderers - Stoke booked a place in their 1st ever FA Cup final with a dominating win over Bolton at Wembley Stadium. Stoke led 3-0 at the half with goals from Matthew Etherington, Robert Huth and Kenwyne Jones and finished off the tie with 2 more goals in the 2nd half from Jon Walters. FA Cup Final - Manchester City (1) v (0) Stoke City - City ended 35 years of waiting for a trophy with a big win against debutants Stoke. City dominated the 1st half but the game remained scoreless at the half. A more open 2nd half was finally settled in City's favour by a goal from YaYa Toure with 15 minutes remaining which City defended to the end. City were bolstered by the return from injury of Carlos Tevez but Stoke didn't fare as well, as injured players Matthew Etherington and Robert Huth struggled to make an impact. Carling Cup 3rd Round - Newcastle (4) @ (3) Chelsea - In a shootout at Stamford Bridge, Newcastle used a last minute winner to knock out the Premier League champions. Newcastle led 3-1 early in the 2nd half with goals from Nile Ranger, Ryan Taylor and Shola Ameobi before Chelsea fought back with 2 goals from Nicolas Anelka. As the game seemed destined for extra-time, Ameobi popped up at a corner in the 90th minute to score the game-winner. Newcastle also featured Sol Campbell, Jonás Gutiérrez and Peter Lovenkrands. Carling Cup - Quarter Final - Manchester United (0) @ (4) West Ham - West Ham secured a huge upset in the snow at Upton Park with a big win that ended United's 29 game unbeaten streak. Bottom of the table West Ham scored 2 goals in each half with Jonathan Spector, playing in midfield instead of his usual position in defense, getting 2 in the 1st half and Carlton Cole scoring the other 2 in the 2nd half. West Ham were missing Scott Parker, Mark Noble, Frederic Piquionne and Valeron Behrami. United fielded Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Javier Hernandez in an otherwise 2nd string side. Carling Cup Semi-Final, 1st Leg - Birmingham (1) @ (2) West Ham - West Ham put one foot in their 1st final in 31 years with a tight win at Upton Park. The Hammers dominated the 1st half and led 1-0 at the break thanks to a goal from Mark Noble. But Birmingham dominated the 2nd half, equalising through Liam Ridgewell, and even though West Ham went down to 10 players after Victor Obinna was sent off, the Hammers re-grouped to score the winner through Carlton Cole with 12 minutes left (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Pearce/Lawrenson, PAL)
Carling Cup Final - Arsenal (1) v (2) Birmingham - Birmingham won their 1st trophy since 1963 with a gutsy win at Wembley. Both teams were tied at 1-1 at the half after an early goal from Nikola Zigic was cancelled out by a great goal from Robin Van Persie. The 2nd half ebbed and flowed with Arsenal looking favourites over a tiring Blues team but substitute Obafemi Martins scored a sensational winner 1 minute from time after a defending error to win the match for Birmingham. FA Cup 3rd Round - Manchester United (3) @ (2) Manchester City - In an all-action derby, United took the win despite almost squandering a 3-0 lead against 10-man City. 1st half goals from Wayne Rooney (2) and Danny Welbeck and the dismissal of City defender Vincent Kompany gave United a comfortable lead at the half. City fought back in the 2nd half with goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Sergio Aguero and almost forced a replay with a late goal-mouth scramble but United held on to progress to the 4th round. FA Cup 4th Round - Manchester United (1) @ (2) Liverpool - The 2 big rivals played out another tight FA Cup match, with Liverpool advancing to the next round with a late winner. 1st half goals from Daniel Agger and Ji-Sung Park put the teams in level at the break and just as the game seemed destined for a replay, Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt ran onto an Andy Carroll header to score the winner with 2 minutes left in the game. Manchester United had more possession during the game but only had 3 shots on target as they played Danny Welbeck up front in place of an injured Wayne Rooney. FA Cup 4th Round - Newcastle United (0) @ (1) Brighton and Hove Albion - In a sold-out Amex Stadium, Brighton upset Premiership Newcastle with a 2nd half goal to advance to the 5th round. FA Cup 5th Round - Brighton (1) @ (6) Liverpool - Premiership Liverpool finally overcame the challenge of Championship side Brighton with a run-away win at Anfield. Liverpool capitalised on 3 own goals by Brighton to advance to the next round with the remaining goals coming from Martin Skrtel, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez. Suarez also missed a penalty. FA Cup Semi-Final - Liverpool (2) v (1) Everton - In the All-Merseyside Semi-Final, Liverpool fought back from a 1-0 deficit to reach the final. Everton controlled the 1st half and went in at the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Nikica Jelavic. But the Reds re-grouped in the 2nd half and equalised after a poor back-pass from Sylvain Distin was intercepted and put away by Louis Suarez. With 3 minutes left, Liverpool completed the comeback when Andy Caroll scored and Liverpool held on to reach their 2nd final of the season. FA Cup Semi-Final - Chelsea (5) v (1) Tottenham Hotspur - The All-London Semi-Final went the way of the Blues as Chelsea used a big 2nd half to book a place in the Final. Chelsea led 1-0 at the half with a fantastic goal from Didier Drogba and controversially added a 2nd from Juan Mata when the referee incorrectly ruled his shot had crossed the goal-line. FA Cup Final - Chelsea (2) v (1) Liverpool - For the 4th time in 6 years, Chelsea claimed the FA Cup but Liverpool made them work for it. The Blues dominated the 1st half and led 1-0 at the half thanks to a goal from Ramires. Didier Drogba stretched the lead to 2-0 early in the 2nd half and the Blues seemed in control. But Liverpool brought on Andy carroll off the substitutes bench and he turned the game around with a goal, but despite heavy pressure, Chelsea held on for the win. Carling Cup Final - Cardiff City (2) v (2) Liverpool - Liverpool finally ended a 6 year wait for a trophy but underdog Cardiff made them fight all the way. Cardiff led 1-0 at the half with a goal from Joe Mason but Liverpool forced Extra-Time with a 2nd half goal from Martin Skrtel. Liverpool then looked to have won the game when Dirk Kuyt scored with 12 minutes left but Cardiff sensationally scored with 2 minutes remaining to force a penalty shootout. FA Cup Preliminary Round - Wembley FC (2) @ (2) Uxbridge - In a competitive game at Honeycroft Stadium, Uxbridge fought back in the 2nd half to take the tie to a replay. Wembley started fast and led 2-0 at the half with the goals coming from Paul Shelton and Daryl Atkins. But Uxbridge came out fired-up after the break and scored 2 goals in the last 30 minutes from Kevin Warner and Chris Moore to tie the game. Despite late chances from both sides, neither team could find the winner so the game went to a replay. FA Cup 2nd Round - AFC Wimbledon (1) @ (2) Milton Keynes Dons - The big grudge match of Round 2 went the way of the home side but they needed an injury time winner to progress to the 3rd round. This was the 1st ever match-up between the teams and it occured 10 years after the Dons left Wimbledon and re-located to Milton Keynes, forcing the Wimbledon supporters to start a new team, AFC Wimbledon. FA Cup 3rd Round - Manchester United (2) @ (2) West Ham - Manchester United forced a replay with an injury-time goal at Upton Park. After falling behind to a Tom Cleverley goal, West Ham took the lead with 2 goals from defender James Collins and seemed to be rolling towards an upset win. But United brought on substitute Robin Van Perise and with his only shot on goal he scored to tie the game. FA Cup 4th round - Chelsea (2) @ (2) Brentford - League 1 Brentford almost upset the European Champions at Griffin Park, but a late Fernando Torres goal forced a replay. Brentford took a 1-0 lead in at the half with a goal from Marcello Trotta and led 2-1 after 73 minutes with a goal from Harry Forrester but Torres rescued the tie with a goal 7 minutes from the end. FA Cup 4th round - Liverpool (2) @ (3) Oldham Athletic - In a big upset at Boundary Park, League 1 Oldham held off a Premiership side Liverpool to advance to the next round. Oldham took a 2-1 lead in at the half with goals from Matt Smith (2) offset by a goal from Luis Suarez. FA Cup Quarter Final - Chelsea (2) @ (2) Manchester United - In a game of 2 halves at Old Trafford, Chelsea cameback from a 2-0 deficit after 11 minutes to force a replay. United started fast with goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, giving the Reds a comfortable lead at the break. FA Cup Quarter Final Replay - Manchester United (0) @ (1) Chelsea - Chelsea claimed a spot in their 4th semi-final in 5 years with a tight win at Stamford Bridge. In a game of few chances, it was Chelsea striker Demba Ba that won the game with an outstanding over-the-shoulder volley in the 2nd half. FA Cup Semi-Final - Millwall (0) v (2) Wigan Athletic - At a rainy Wembley Stadium, Premiership Wigan dispatched Championship Millwall to reach their 1st ever FA Cup Final. Wigan dominated the 1st half and led 1-0 at the break through a well-taken Shaun Maloney goal. Millwall mounted a comeback at the start of the 2nd half but, against the run of play, Callum McManaman settled the game with a 2nd for Wigan which they defended to the end. FA Cup Semi-Final - Manchester City (2) v (1) Chelsea - In a sensational game of free-flowing, attacking football, Manchester City edged holders Chelsea to reach their 2nd Final in 3 years. Both teams came out on the attack, and City scored the all-important goal through Samir Nasri to lead at the half. City doubled their lead 2 minutes into the 2nd half through Sergio Aguero but Chelsea found their feet, pulling a goal back after 66 minutes through Demba Ba. FA Cup Final - Manchester City (0) v (1) Wigan - In the biggest Cup Final upset since 1988, 3rd from bottom Wigan beat 2nd from top City to win their 1st ever FA Cup. Wigan were the better team for much of the game and won the Cup with a goal in the 91st minute from substitute Ben Watson. The goal came from their only shot on target in the match. 2 days after the game, Manchester City sacked manager Roberto Mancini and 1 day later, Wigan were relegated. Capital One Cup 4th Round - Arsenal (7) @ (5) Reading - On a sensational night at the Madejski Stadium, Arsenal overturned a 4-0 deficit to reach the Quarter Finals. Reading dominated the 1st half, leading 4-0 after 37 minutes with goals from Jason Roberts, a Laurent Koscielny own goal, Mikele Leigertwood and Noel Hunt. But Arsenal scored 4 unanswered goals of their own to force extra-time, with the tieing goal coming on the last play of regualtion. Both teams scored again before Arsenal scored 2 goals in the final minute of extra-time to take the win. Capital One Cup 4th Round - Manchester United (4) @ (5) Chelsea - Chelsea booked their place in the Quarter Final, over-whelming a young United side with great attacking football. A back-and-forth game saw United leading 3-2 entering the final minute of the game. But Chelsea won and converted a penalty to force extra-time, before finishing of the game with 2 more goals. A lone reply from United wasn't enough and Chelsea held on to win. The Chelsea goals came from David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard, Daniel Sturridge and Ramires. FA Cup Round 3 - West Ham United (0) @ (5) Nottingham Forest - Championship side Nottingham Forest advanced to the 4th round with an upset win over struggling Premier League side West Ham. The Hammers rested their first-teamers and fielded 3 players making their 1st team debuts (Danny Whitehead, Callum Driver and Sebastian Lletget) and gave George Moncur his 1st start in the 1st team. Forest dominated the game (61 % possession, 22 shots to 12) but only led 1-0 at the half. The Forest experience showed in the 2nd half as they scored 4 unanswered goals to book their place in the 5th round. The Forest goals came from Jamie Paterson (3), Djamel Abdoun and Andy Reid. FA Cup Final - Arsenal (3) v (2) Hull City - Arsenal finally ended 9 years without a trophy by beating Hull at Wembley. The game started poorly for the Gunners as they were 2-0 down after 8 minutes, but they fought back to tie the game with 19 minutes left before finishing off Hull with the winner in extra-time. Community Shield - Arsenal (3) v (0) Manchester City - In the annual curtain raiser to the forthcoming season, Cup winners Arsenal beat Champions Manchester City at Wembley. Arsenal had the better of the 1st half and led 2-0 at the break with goals from Santi Carzola and Aaron Ramsey. City came back into the game in the 2nd half but Olivier Giroud ended the game as a contest with a stunning 25 yarder after 60 minutes. Arsenal also featured Alexis Sanchez but were missing Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski (all rested). FA Cup Round 1 - Exeter City (0) @ (1) Warrington Town - The part-timers of Warrington Town upset League 2 Exeter to advance to the 2nd round for the 1st time in their history. FA Cup Round 1 Replay - Portsmouth (0) @ (1) Aldershot Town - Non-League Aldershot registered a big upset by beating League 2 Portsmouth with a late goal. Both teams were evenly matched but the match was settled in the Shots favour in the 81st minute when Mark Moseley bundled in a goal after a goal-mouth scramble following a corner. FA Cup 3rd Round - Liverpool (2) @ (1) AFC Wimbledon - In a re-match of the 1988 Cup Final, Premier League Liverpool reversed the 1988 score with a hard-fought win against League 2 Wimbledon. The hero for Liverpool was captain Steven Gerrard who scored both goals, 1 in each half. FA Cup 3rd Round Replay - Everton (2) @ (2) West Ham - On a sensational night at Upton Park, West Ham survived a spirited fight-back from Everton to reach the 4th round for the 1st time in 3 years. After a scoreless 1st half, West Ham opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a goal from Enner Valencia then watched Everton have a man sent off. But it was the Toffees that pushed on and equalised with 8 minutes left with a goal from Kevin Mirallas. In extra-time Everton took the lead with a Romalu Lukaku goal but West Ham forced a penalty shootout with a goal from Carlton Cole with 7 minutes remaining. He scored in the 79h minute with a great goal then, as the game entered the 4th minute of injury time, captain Troy Deeney converted a penalty to sensationally force extra-time. With momentum now on the side of the Hornets, Deulofeu completed the comeback with a winner in the 104th minute and booked Watford's place in the Final. FA Cup 2nd Round - Chichester City (1) @ (5) Tranmere Rovers - League One Tranmere Rovers moved on to the 3rd round with a big home win against a tough Chichester City team from the 8th tier of the football league. Despite being separated by 104 places, the part-timers of Chichester City held Tranmere to 0-0 at the half, but Rovers showed their class in the 2nd half and scored 4 goals in 13 second-half minutes to end the visitors hopes of an upset. FA Cup 3rd Round - West Ham (2) @ (0) Gillingham - West Ham continued their good form under new manager David Moyes with a tight win at the Priestfield Stadium. After a scoreless 1st half that Gillingham had the better of, West Ham came out for the 2nd half a different team and in the 74th minute took the lead with a goal from substitute Pablo Zabaleta. It was his 1st ever goal for the club. FA Cup 3rd Round - Everton (0) @ (1) Liverpool - Liverpool continued their winning streak over their big rivals with a sensational win at Anfield. Title-chasing Liverpool made 9 changes from their previous match, giving debuts to Takumi Minamino, Nathaniel Phillips and Yasser Larouci, and it showed in the 1st half as Everton created several clear chances but failed to capitalise. And Liverpool made them pay when in the 71st minute 18 year old Curtis Jones banged in a 25 yard curler into the top corner to win the game. Both teams were evenly matched, with both teams combining for 31 shots on goals, but Chelsea made the most of their attempts, scoring a goal in each half to take the win. The loss was City's first in a domestic cup competition for 2.5 years. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta got the better of his old boss Pep Guardiola as his Arsenal team used great Defense and an opportunistic Offense to take the win. The Chelsea win ended Manchester United's 19-match unbeaten run in all competitions. The Blues dominated the game, especially in midfield, and took control of the game with a goal either side of half-time. The match was settled with 16 minutes to play when United conceded an own-goal and even a late goal from United wasn't enough to change the result. FA Cup Final - Arsenal (2) v (1) Chelsea - On the 1st August, in front of an empty Wembley Stadium due to the Coronavirus Pandemic lockdown, Arsenal won their 14th FA Cup in a come-from-behind victory. Chelsea scored in the 5th minute with a great finish from Christian Pulisic, but a goal in each half from captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brought the Gunners back and they easily saw out the game for the win. Chelsea were not helped by losing captain Cesar Azpilicueta and Pulisic to injury and they also had Mateo Kovacic sent off in the 2nd half for 2 yellow cards. Arsenal also featured goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, David Luiz, Daniel Ceballos and Alexandre Lacazette.
