FA Cup 4th Round - West Ham (1) @ (0) Manchester United - West Ham booked their place in the 5th round with a rare defeat of United. A goal in the 75th minute from Paolo Di Canio did the damage and inflicted on United their first home defeat in the Cup for 9 years. West Ham also featured Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Frederick Kanoute. FA Cup 6th Round - Wycombe Wanderers (2) @ (1) Leicester City - Non-League Wycombe continued their "Cinderella" run in the Cup with a sensational late winner at Filbert Street. Wycombe took the lead in the 2nd half with a goal from Paul McCarthy but Leicester equalised with a goal from Muzzy Izzet. With a replay looking on the cards, substitute striker Roy Essandoh sensationally scored the winner in the 2nd minute of injury time to knock out the Premiership side. FA Cup Final - Arsenal (2) v (0) Chelsea - Arsenal took 1 step towards the League and Cup double with an emphatic win over Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. After a nervy 1st half of few chances, Arsenal finally took control of the game with 2 goals in 10 minutes in the 2nd Half. Both goals were great individual efforts and were scored by Ray Parlour and man-of-the-match Freddie Ljungberg. Arsenal also featured Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry. FA Cup 3rd Round - Everton (1) @ (2) Shrewsbury Town - Premiership side Everton were turned over by 3rd Division side Shrewsbury Town who rode the scoring of captain Nigel Jemson to the upset win. The Shrews were the better team and made more chances with Jemson giving his team a 1-0 lead at the half. Everton fought back in the 2nd half, equalising through Niclas Alexandersson, but Jemson sealed the win in the 88th minute with a header from a free-kick. Southampton manager Harry Redknapp had recently left Portsmouth to manage the Saints and the fans were very angry at his defection. FA Cup Final Semi-Final - Liverpool (2) v (1) Chelsea - League leaders Chelsea were favourites to win but coach Jose Mourinho strangely fielded a defensive formation that gave the initiative to Liverpool. Jon Arne Riise opened the scoring and Luis Garcia scored a second, but a change in personnel and a fortuitous Diddier Drogba goal set up a nervous last 10 minutes. FA Cup Final Semi-Final - West Ham (1) v (0) Middlesbrough - Middlesbrough dominated the 1st half but West Ham dominated the 2nd half and were rewarded with a Marlon Harewood goal on 77 minutes. But Middlesbrough re-found their rhythm and forced immense pressure in the final 10 minutes. FA Cup Final - West Ham (3) v (3) Liverpool - In arguably the greatest FA Cup Final of modern times, a favoured Liverpool team had to comeback from 2-0 down to force extra-time on a last minute 35 yard thunderbolt from captain Steven Gerrard. Neither team could find the winning goal although West Ham had a shot pushed onto the post in the last minute. Community Shield - Liverpool (2) @ (1) Chelsea - In the curtain raiser for the new season, Liverpool made a statement that they were for real as they upset the Champions. Liverpool opened the scoring with a length-of-the-field run and shot from Jon Arne Riise before new Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko scored his 1st goal for the club. Liverpool won the game with a goal from Peter Crouch with 10 minutes to go. Liverpool fielded new signings Craig Bellamy, Jermaine Pennant and Mark Gonzalez. FA Cup Round 4 - Havant & Waterlooville (2) @ (5) Liverpool - Premiership side Liverpool survived a scare from the part-timers from Hampshire, pulling away in the 2nd half to progress to the next round. Havant sensationally led 1-0 and 2-1 in the 1st half before Liverpool scored 4 unanswered goals, including 3 in the 2nd half, to take the win. The Havant goals came from Richard Pacquette and Alfie Potter and the Liverpool goals came from Yossi Benayoun (2), Lucas Leiva and Peter Crouch. FA Cup Round 5 - Barnsley (2) @ (1) Liverpool - Championship side Barnsley upset Premiership side Liverpool with a come-back win at Anfield. In an open, attacking game, Liverpool led 1-0 at the half with a goal from Dirk Kuyt but Barnsley kept on the Offensive a pulled a goal back in the 57 minute from Stephen Foster. The game looked set for a replay when in the 3rd minute of injury time, Barnsley midfielder Brian Howard knocked in the game-winning goal. FA Cup 6th Round - Portsmouth (1) @ (0) Manchester United - In a sensational game at Old Trafford, Portsmouth stunned the home team with a late winner to book their place in the Semi-Final. United battered Pompey, creating chance after chance, but paid for poor finishing when Portsmouth won and converted a penalty with 12 minutes remaining. United were already on their reserve keeper, Tomasz Kuszczak, when he brought down Milan Baros in the box and he was sent off. Defender Rio Ferdinand went in goal but Sulley Muntari scored the penalty and Pompey held on for the win, their 1st at Old Trafford for 50 years. FA Cup Final - Cardiff (0) v (1) Portsmouth - In a keenly contested final, it was Portsmouth that won it's first FA Cup final since 1939. The hero was forward Kanu with a 1st half goal that Pompey defended to the end. Carling Cup, 2nd Round - Sheffield United (0) @ (6) Arsenal - Arsene Wenger fielded Arsenal's youngest ever team, average age of 19, but the Gunners still ended up winners as they played exciting attacking football. Carling Cup Round 2 - Manchester City (2) @ (2) Brighton - In one of the biggest shocks in the Cups history, League 1 Brighton knocked out the newly appointed "Richest Club in Football" in a penalty shootout.Brighton forced extra-time with an 89th minute goal from Glenn Murray and then took the lead with a goal from Joe Anyinsah. City then equalised to force a penalty shootout but Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers saved from Michael Ball and Brighton's Matthew Richards converted his kick to send City out of the Cup (10, 1 Disc, Official DVD - Beckett/Camillin, PAL)
FA Cup 4th round - West Ham United (2) @ (0) Hartlepool United - West Ham booked their passage into the 5th round with a comfortable win over Hartlepool. 2 goals in 2 minutes at the end of the first half won the game as Valon Behrami and Mark Noble (with a converted Penalty) gave the Hammers a cushion they defended to the end. FA Cup Semi-Final - Chelsea (2) v (1) Arsenal - Chelsea reached their 2nd final in 3 seasons with a come-from-behind win against Arsenal. The Gunners scored 1st with a Theo Walcott goal after 18 minutes but Chelsea soon equalised through Florent Malouda after 33 minutes. The 2nd half proved a cagey affair with Chelsea creating the better chances and they finished off Arsenal with the winner from Didier Drogba in the 84th minute. Chelsea also featured Frank Lampard and John Terry. FA Cup Final - Everton (1) v (2) Chelsea - In the sweltering heat of Wembley, Chelsea won their 2nd Cup in 3 years and sent departing coach Guus Hiddink out a winner. The Blues had to come from behind though as the Toffees started quickly with a Louis Saha goal in 25 seconds. But Chelsea responded with goals from Didier Drogba and a 25 yard goal from Frank Lampard with 18 minutes left to take the win. Chelsea got a huge game from man-of-the-match Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka. Everton were led by Tim Cahill and Phil Neville (10, 3 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Beglin, PAL)
2009/10
FA Cup 3rd Round - Replay - Reading (2) @ (1) Liverpool - Reading finally won at Anfield, and knocked Liverpool out of the cup with an extra-time goal. Despite losing Fernando Torres to injury after 30 minutes, Liverpool took the lead in 1st half injury time with a Steven Gerrard shot deflected in for an own-goal. But the Reds also lost Gerrard due to injury in the 2nd half and the Royals took advantage and forced extra-time with a Penalty in the 4th minute of injury time. FA Cup 4th Round - Leeds United (2) @ (2) Tottenham Hotspur - Leeds continued their cinderella run in the cup, but only just as they had to rely on an injury time penalty to force a reply. Tottenham started stronger and Jermain Defoe gave Spurs a 1-0 lead at the break as well as missing a penalty. In the 2nd half, Leeds squared the game with a Jermaine Beckford goal but Spurs pushed on an Roman Pavlyuchenko gave them the lead on the 75th minute as Leeds started to run out of gas. FA Cup 4th Round - Arsenal (1) @ (3) Stoke City - Stoke upset a young Arsenal team to reach the 5th round. Goals from Ricardo Fuller (2) & Dean Whitehead offset a goal from Denilson as Stoke used a strong 2nd half to take the win. FA Cup 4th Round - Manchester City (4) @ (2) Scunthorpe United - City advanced to the 5th round in a high-scoring affair in Scunthorpe. Goals from Martin Petrov, Nedum Onuoha, Sylvinho and Robinho put the result beyond doubt after a spirited 1st half from Scunthorpe saw them trailing only 2-1 at the break. The Scunthorpe goals came from Paul Hayes and an own goal from City defender Dedryck Boyata. The game proved to be the last at City for Robinho (10, 2 Discs, ITV - Drury/Beglin, PAL)
FA Cup 5th Round - Portsmouth (4) @ (1) Southampton - For the first time in 5 years, the 2 old enemies met and Portsmouth upset the form guide with a big win to reach the next round. Goals from Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, Aruna Dindane, Nadir Belhadj and Jamie O'Hara did the damage with the lone Southampton goal from Ricky Lambert. FA Cup Quarter Final - Aston Villa (4) @ (2) Reading - Villa booked their place in the Semi-Final with a remarkable comeback in the 2nd half. Reading dominated the 1st half and went in at the half 2-0 up with 2 goals from Shane Long. But Villa exploded in the 2nd half and were 3-2 up after 12 minutes with goals from Ashley Young and 2 from John Carew. Reading pressed for a late equaliser but conceded a penalty in injury time that Carew converted for his hat-trick and ended Reading's fairytale run (9, 2 Discs, ITV - Tyldesley/Gallacher, PAL)
FA Cup Semi-Final - Tottenham Hotspur (0) v (2) Portsmouth - In a big upset, underdog Portsmouth secured a place in their 2nd FA Cup Final in 3 years with an Extra-Time win over Spurs. After a scoreless 90 minutes, Portsmouth struck first in Extra-Time with a goal from Frederic Piquionne and sealed the win with a penalty from Kevin-Prince Boateng. FA Cup Final - Portsmouth (0) v (1) Chelsea - Chelsea completed their 1st ever Double with a big win at Wembley. The Blues dominated the 1st half, hitting the woodwork 5 times, but couldn't find the goal. The 2nd half saw the breakthrough but only after Portsmouth had had a penalty saved. Carling Cup - Semi-Final, 1st Leg - Manchester United (1) @ (2) Manchester City - Old boy Carlos Tevez came back to haunt United as arch-rivals City cameback from a 1-0 deficit to take a winning advantage into the 2nd Leg. An early Ryan Giggs goal gave United the lead before a controversial penalty before half-time, scored by Tevez, gave the Blues new life and Tevez struck again in the 65th minute to give City the lead and the win (10, 2 Discs, BBC - Mowbray/Lawrenson, PAL)
Carling Cup Semi-Final, 2nd Leg - Manchester City (1) @ (3) Manchester United - United booked a place in the Final with a big win over their rival neighbours, scoring the winning goal in injury time. City led 2-1 from the 1st leg but goals from Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick gave United the lead with 14 minutes left before Carlos Tevez levelled the game 2 minutes later. Carling Cup - Semi-Final, 2nd Leg - Blackburn Rovers (4) @ (6) Aston Villa - In a shootout at Villa Park, Aston Villa shook off an early 2-0 deficit to advance to their 1st final in 10 years. Blackburn were 1-0 down from the 1st leg but quickly turned it around with 2 goals in the first 26 minutes. But Villa found their feet and scored the next 5 goals to take control of the tie. 2 late Blackburn goals made for a tense finish but Villa killed of the tie with an injury time goal to take the win. The 6 Villa goals came from 6 different players ; Stephen Warnock, James Milner, Charles Nzonzi, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and Ashley Young. Carling Cup Final - Manchester United (2) v (1) Aston Villa - Manchester United successfully defended their League Cup title but had to come from behind to do it. In an open and entertaining game, Villa took the lead with a penalty from James Milner but it was soon cancelled out by a goal from Michael Owen. Owen went off injured and was replaced by Wayne Rooney and he scored the winner in the 2nd half to give United coach Alex Ferguson his 32nd trophy. United also featured Dimitar Berbatov, who had a good game, and man-of-the-match Antonio Valencia. Villa also featured Emile Heskey, Gabriel Abonglahor and Stuart Downing. Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final - Southampton (4) v (1) Carlisle - Southampton claimed their 1st trophy in 34 years at Wembley Stadium with a big win over Carlisle. 1st half goals from Rickie Lambert (a penalty) and Adam Lallana gave the Saints the edge and in the 2nd half further goals from Papa-Waigo N'Diaye and Michail Antonio sealed the win.
