FA Cup Round 3 - Chelsea (2) @ (2) Crystal Palace - The 2 London rivals faced off on a frozen pitch at a cold Selhurst Park, and Chelsea made sure of a replay with a 2nd half fight-back that won them a draw. Crystal Palace exchanged their boots for Basketball Trainers and it seemed to help as they took a 2-1 lead in at the half. But pressure from the Blues at the start of the 2nd half resulted in an equalising goal and despite both teams having chances to win the game, the match ended in a draw. The Crystal Palace goalscorers were John McCormick and Alan Birchenall. FA Cup Round 4 - Manchester City (3) @ (0) Chelsea - City used ruthless finishing to beat Chelsea at a rainy Stamford Bridge, and booked their place in the 5th round. After a scoreless 1st half, City took control in the 2nd half with goals from Colin Bell (2) and Ian Bowyer. Chelsea played great football between the boxes, but poor finishing let them down. City also featured Mike Summerbee but were missing Francis Lee. FA Cup Round 5 - Leeds United (2) @ (3) Colchester United - In a big upset, 4th Division Colchester United upset Division 1 leaders Leeds to reach the 6th round. The U's had the better of the 1st half and led 2-0 at the break. They increased their lead at the start of the 2nd half but Leeds suddenly started to dominate the game and pulled back 2 goals to put pressure on the home team. The U's held on though, and celebrated a big win. The Colchester goals came from Ray Crawford (2) and Dave Simmons. The Leeds goals came from Johhny Giles and Norman Hunter. FA Cup Semi-Final - Arsenal (2) v (2) Stoke City - Double-chasing Arsenal nearly lost their chance to win the FA Cup but 2 goals in the 2nd half earned them a replay. The Stoke City fans at Hillsborough were in dream-land as the Potters took a 2 goal lead in at the half. Arsenal pulled a goal back straight after the break but it needed an equaliser in the 4th minute of injury for Arsenal to escape with a replay. Both the Arsenal goals came from Peter Storey. The Stoke goals were scored by Denis Smith and John Ritchie. FA Cup Final - Arsenal (2) v (1) Liverpool - Arsenal completed the League and FA Cup double, the 1st team since 1961 to do so, with an extra-time win over Liverpool. Both teams were scoreless at full time, but Liverpool broke the deadlock with a Steve Heigway goal. Arsenal answered with a George Graham goal then won it all 9 minutes from time with a thunderous shot from Charlie George. Arsenal also featured Bob Wilson in goal, Frank McLintock and Ray Kennedy. FA Cup 3rd Round Replay - Newcastle United (1) @ (2) Hereford Town - In one of the biggest cup upsets ever, non-league Hereford upset 1st Division Newcastle in extra-time. After a scoreless 1st half Newcastle striker Malcolm Macdonald finally broke the deadlock on 72 minutes only for Ronnie Radford to equalise 3 minutes later with a long range screamer. With neither team able to find the winner, the game went to extra-time where substitute Ricky George scored the winner to knock out the Geordies. FA Cup Final - Leeds United (1) v (0) Arsenal - Leeds United won their first ever FA Cup in a scruffy Final at Wembley. A 53rd minute goal from Allan 'Sniffer' Clarke did the damage and Leeds held on to win. Leeds also featured Mick Jones, Jack Charlton, Billy Bremner and Eddie Gray. FA Cup Round 3 - Stoke City (2) @ (3) Manchester City - City booked their place in the 4th round with a great display of attacking football at Maine Road. City were in inspired form, scoring 3 goals and also hit the woodwork twice. Stoke City played their part, also hitting the woodwork twice, but City proved too much in the end. The Manchester City goals came from Colin Bell, Rodney Marsh and Mike Summerbee. Both of the Stoke City goals came from Jimmy Greenhoff. FA Cup Semi-Final - Sunderland (2) v (1) Arsenal - At a packed Hillsborough, Sunderland shocked Arsenal to book a place in their first FA Cup Final since 1937. Sunderland were the more adventurous in the 1st half and took a 1-0 lead in at the half. In the 2nd half, after a break in play to tend to injured Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson, Sunderland doubled their advantage with a headed goal that looped over Wilson into the net. Arsenal became more aggressive, with Charlie George throwing his weight around, and it was George that scored with 6 minutes left to make for a nervey finish for Sunderland. But they held on to the final whistle and celebrated a trip to the final. FA Cup Final - Sunderland (1) v (0) Leeds United - In a major upset, 2nd division Sunderland beat the reigning cup holders Leeds United. A first half goal from Ian Porterfield was resolutely defended by the underdogs and personified by a fanatastic 2nd half double-save by goalkeeper Jim Montgomery. Sunderland featured David Watson, Bobby Kerr, Vic Halom and Dennis Tueart. FA Cup Final - Liverpool (3) v (0) Newcastle - Liverpool won their 2nd FA cup with a dominating display over Newcastle. 2nd half goals from Kevin Keegan (2) and Steve Heigway capped a strong defensive display that kept Newcastle striker Malcolm Macdonald quiet. Liverpool also featured Ray Clemence in goal, Phil Thompson, Emlyn Hughes and John Toshack. Newcastle also featured Alan Kennedy, Terry McDermott and Bobby Moncur. The game proved to be the final match as coach of Liverpool for Bill Shankly. Charity Shield - Liverpool (1) v (1) Leeds United - The annual curtain raiser for the new season saw a bad-tempered match finally settled by penalties after the teams finished 1-1 after extra-time. Liverpool held their nerve during the shootout and won 6-5. The match was the last as manager for Liverpool's Bill Shankly and the first for new Leeds manager Brian Clough. Liverpool scored 1st with a goal from Phil Boersma but Trevor Cherry equalised with 20 minutes to go for Leeds, setting up the tense finale. The game was marred by a fight between Billy Bremner and Kevin Keegan that saw both players sent off. FA Cup 4th Round - Leatherhead (2) @ (3) Leicester City - Amateur side Leatherhead nearly upset Division 1 Leicester at Filbert Street but the Foxes used a strong 2nd half to take the win. Leatherhead led 2-0 at the half with goals from Peter McGillicuddy and Chris Kelly but Leicester came out fired up after the break and scored 3 unanswered goals from John Sammels, Steve Earle and Keith Weller to knock out the underdogs. FA Cup 4th Round - Swindon Town (1) @ (1) West Ham United - 3rd Division Swindon gave 1st Division West Ham a shock at Upton Park, forcing a replay with a gutsy performance. Both teams created chances in the 1st half but the game was tied 0-0 at the break. West Ham made the breakthrough in the 74 minute but Swindon fought back and sent the game to a replay with a goal 8 minutes from time. The West Ham goal came from Billy Jennings. The Swindon goal came from Peter Eastoe. West Ham also featured Frank Lampard, Billy Bonds, Trevor Brooking and Clyde Best. FA Cup 5th Round - Queens Park Rangers (1) @ (2) West Ham United - A much-anticipated London derby lived up to expectation as both teams clamoured for a place in the next round of the cup. Both teams were playing great attacking football in the league, with West Ham led by Trevor Brooking and QPR led by Stan Bowles, and it was Brooking that saw his team to victory with a man-of-the-match performance. The teams were tied at 1-1 at the half but West Ham scored in the 1st minute after half-time to take the lead, and then defended well in the 2nd half to take the win. The West Ham goals came from Pat Holland and Keith Robson. The QPR goal came from Dave Clements. West Ham also featured Billy Bonds and Frank Lampard. QPR also featured goalkeeper Phil Parkes, Frank McLintock and Don Masson but were missing Gerry Francis to injury. FA Cup Semi-Final - Leeds United (1) v (2) Manchester United - At Hillsborough, Manchester United won through to their 2nd straight FA Cup Final with a nervy win over an ageing Leeds side. United came out on fire and scored 2 goals in the opening 14 minutes to take control of the game. Leeds overcame a poor 1st half to fight back in the 2nd half and got back into the game with a converted penalty in the 69th minute but, despite a furious finish from Leeds, the Reds held on for the win. The Manchester United goals came from Jimmy Greenhoff and Steve Coppell. The Leeds United goal came from Alan Clarke. Manchester United also featured Sammie McIlroy, Brian Greenhoff and Lou Macari. FA Cup Semi-Final - Liverpool (2) v (2) Everton - Everton managed to force a replay from high-flying Liverpool with a big comeback at Maine Road. Twice Liverpool took the lead and twice Everton equalised and nearly won the game with 8 minutes left when Bryan Hamilton scored only for referee Clive Thomas to rule it out. The Liverpool goals came from Terry McDermott, a great chip, and Jimmy Case. The Everton goals came from Duncan McKenzie, who had a great game, and Bruce Rioch. FA Cup Round 5 - Blyth Spartans (1) @ (1) Wrexham - On a cold and windy day in Wrexham, and on a slippery pitch, Non-League Blyth Spartans almost pulled off an upset. The visitors opened the scoring early on with a goal from Terry Johnson and looked to be heading for victory when, in the last minute of the game, Wrexham's Dixie McNeill headed in the equaliser from a corner to earn a replay. FA Cup 6th Round - Nottingham Forest (0) @ (2) West Bromwich Albion - West Brom ended Forest's 22 match unbeaten run with a big win at a buzzing Hawthorns. Forest had their chances but were let down by poor finishing. In contrast, the Baggies took their chances when they arrived, with a goal in each half from Mick Martin and Cyrille Regis. Forest featured Peter Withe, Martin O'Neill, Archie Gemmill and Frank Clark. FA Cup Semi-Final - Ipswich Town (3) v (1) West Bromwich Albion - Ipswich booked their trip to the Final with a good win against a strong West Brom team. FA Cup Final - Arsenal (0) v (1) Ipswich Town - Ipswich won their 1st FA Cup with an upset win over Arsenal. Midfielder Roger Osborne was the hero with a 2nd half goal. Arsenal were out-muscled all game and Ipswich were unlucky not to win by a bigger margin as they hit the post twice. Ipswich featured Paul Mariner, John Wark and George Burley. League Cup Final - Southampton (2) v (3) Nottingham Forest - On a cut-up Wembley pitch surrounded by snow, Forest rebounded from a 1-0 deficit at the half to retain the League Cup, the first side ever to do so. Southampton took the lead on a David Peach goal but, after a half-time talking to from manager Brian Clough, it was Forest that scored the next 3 goals. Gary Birtles scored 2 with Tony Woodcock supplying the other as Forest shut-down the Saints. Southampton did pull a goal back in the 87th minute from Nick Holmes but it was too late to save the game. Forest also featured goalkeeper Peter Shilton, Martin O'Neill, John Roberston and Archie Gemmill. FA Cup Semi-Final - Liverpool (2) v (2) Manchester United - In a great game of attacking football, the 2 giants of British football battled to a replay. Liverpool struck first with a superb individual goal from Kenny Dalglish but 3 minutes later Joe Jordan equalised. Liverpool had a chance to take the lead before the half but missed a penalty. The 2nd half saw end-to-end action with Jimmy Greenhoff giving United the lead once again but Liverpool piled on the pressure and equalised 7 minutes from time with defender Alan Hansen the hero. But 2 quick goals from McQueen and McIlroy tied the game. FA Cup Quarter Final - Aston Villa (0) @ (1) West Ham - In front of a loud crowd at Upton Park, Division 2 West Ham booked their place in the Semi-Finals with an upset win over Division 1 high-flyers Aston Villa. The Hammers dominated the game but couldn't find a way past Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer. As the game edged towards 90 minutes, a replay seemed on the cards, but a controversial hand-ball by Villa gave West Ham a penalty, and Ray Stewart stepped up to score the game-winner that sent the Hammers into the Semis. West Ham also featured Trevor Brooking, Alan Devonshire and Geoff Pike but were missing Billy Bonds.
