03/05/69 - British Home International - England (3) @ (1) Northern Ireland - England opened their Home International campaign with a tough win in Belfast. England led a tight 1st half 1-0 at the break thanks to a goal from Martin Peters but the Northern Irish pulled a goal back through Eric McCordie to send the crowd wild. England then spolied the party with an immediate reply from Francis Lee and capped the game off with a penalty from Geoff Hurst that killed the game after Lee had been brought down in the box. 14/06/70 - World Cup Quarter Final - England (2) v (3) West Germany - England were strolling along with a 2 goal lead when manager Alf Ramsey decided to substitute the engine room of the team, Bobby Charlton. The move backfired as West Germany found their rhythm and scored 2 goals to take the game to extra-time. 28/05/76 - United States Bicentennial Tournament - England (3) v (2) Italy - In New York's Yankee Stadium, England cameback from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Italians, their 1st victory against them since 1961. Italy led 2-0 at half with both goals from Francesco Graziani (Torino). But England took control of the game with 3 goals in 8 minutes at the start of the 2nd half which they defended until the end. The England goals came from captain Mick Channon (2) and Phil Thompson. The game was Channon's 1st as captain and Thompson's goal was his 1st for his country. 31/05/76 - United States Bicentennial Tournament - Team America (1) v (3) England - Both teams ended the Bi-Centennial tournament with an entertaining game at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. England dominated possession and led 2-0 at the half with 2 goals from Kevin Keegan, and England increased their lead with a great individual goal from Gerry Francis early in the 2nd half. Team America didn't quit and got their reward when substitute Stewart Scullion scored in the final minutes. 01/07/90 - World Cup Quarter Final - England (3) v (2) Cameroon - England qualified for their first World Cup semi-final since 1966 with a dogged display against Cameroon. England took a 1-0 lead in at the break but the introduction of Cameroon's talisman Roger Milla turned the game and Cameroon scored 2 goals in 4 minutes to take a 2-1 lead. But England weren't done and forced Extra-time with a penalty in the 83rd minute. Once in extra-time, England found the one piece of skill to win the game, winning and converting another penalty, and then held on to book their place in Turin. Miraculously, the referee didn't send him off. To rub salt in the wounds, moments later Koeman scored the opening goal with a subtle free-kick. 01/09/01 - World Cup Qualifier - England (5) @ (1) Germany - England had suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat in the last ever game at Wembley to Germany and needed a win in Munich to keep pace with the group leaders for qualification to the World Cup Finals. The game started terribly for England as Carsten Jancker scored within 5 minutes but England started to get going and on 13 minutes Owen scored. Both teams then settled down but deep in 1st Half injury time Steven Gerrard hit a low drive into the bottom corner and England had the lead. 3 minutes into the 2nd half, England scored again as Michael Owen scored his 2nd goal. Owen completed his hat-trick in the 65th minute and Emile Heskey ended the rout with the 5th goal on 74 minutes. Germany were missing star striker Alexandra Popp, who was injured in the warm-up, but England couldn't take advantage until the 62nd minute when Ella Toone scored. The lead only lasted 17 minutes before Lina Magull equalised for Germany, forcing extra-time.
