Both teams were evenly matched but Chelsea proved more clinical in the final 3rd of the pitch, led by striker Bobby Tambling who scored 5 goals. Liverpool were great going forward but poor in Defense and Birmingham exploited the fact to take a 3-2 lead in at the half. As the rain fell in the 2nd half, Liverpool fought back and equalised before Birmingham scored a legitimate goal only for the referee to bizarrely disallow it. 1st Division - Newcastle (5) @ (5) Queens Park Rangers - On the plastic pitch at Loftus Road, QPR engineered one of the greatest comebacks in league history to secure a point. Newcastle dominated the 1st half and led 4-0 at the half thanks to a goal from Neil MacDonald and a 24 minute hat-trick from Chris Waddle. But the 2nd half belonged to QPR as they scored 3 goals from Gary Bannister, John Gregory and a bizarre own goal from Kenny Wharton as a clearance in the penalty area hit him square in the face and rebounded into the goal. Wharton scored at the right end to give Newcastle a 2 goal lead again but QPR stole a point with 2 goals in the final 5 minutes from Steve Wicks and Gary Micklewhite.
