In a scrappy game, complete with a punch-up, Chris "Choppy" Close showed the most skill in scoring a sensational try while Mal Meninga added 7 goals. Queensland starred Wally Lewis and Mal Meninga. Game 1 - New South Wales (15) @ (22) Queensland - Queensland fought back from a 15-0 deficit behind tries from Backer, Close, Lewis and Meninga to win the 2nd ever State of Origin game. Game 1 - New South Wales (20) @ (16) Queensland - In front of a rabid Queensland crowd, the Blues stole a win with a try on the last play of the game to take the series lead. The game was tied at 16-16 when Mark McGaw ran down the sideline, threw an inside pass that was knocked down but kicked into the goal area where McGaw just managed to touch down inches before the ball rolled out of touch. Game 4 - New South Wales (30) v (18) Queensland - To promote Rugby League in America, an extra State of Origin match was played in Long Beach, California. Queensland had won the series 2-1 and viewed the game as an exhibition match while Blues looked to restore some pride and viewed the game as a full-on match. The Blues Peter Sterling turned in a man-of-the-match performance as the Blues scored 5 tries to 3 from the Maroons. Game 1 - Queensland (26) @ (18) New South Wales - In the first-ever Origin game held at the newly built Sydney Football Stadium, Queensland built on a 12-6 lead at the half to take a 1-0 series lead. The Maroons tries came from Gary Belcher, Peter Jackson, Alan McIndoe and Allan Langer (2). The Blues tries came from Michael O'Connor, Andrew Ettinghausen and Mark McGraw. Game 2 - New South Wales (6) @ (16) Queensland - In a feisty affair at Lang Park, Queensland clinched the series with a late comeback sparked by man-of-the-match Sam Backo. The Blues led 6-4 with 18 minutes left in the game when an all-in brawl saw Maroons captain Wally Lewis sin-binned. As he left the field, the home fans threw beer cans onto the field to show their anger towards referee Mick Stone. The sending off galvanised the Maroons and they responded with tries from Backo and Allan Langer to take the win. Game 3 - Queensland (38) @ (22) New South Wales - Queensland completed their 1st ever series whitewash of the Blues with a sparkling offensive showing in Sydney. Both teams were level at 18-18 at the half, but Queensland dominated the 2nd half to run out easy winners. Game 1 - New South Wales (4) @ (6) Queensland - Wally Lewis led the Maroons in his last ever Origin series. Game 2 - Queensland (12) @ (14) New South Wales - In awful conditions of rain and mud, NSW evened the series, kicking the game winning PAT in the last 2 mins. But Queensland strung together one final flowing move involving 11 passes that swept from one side of the pitch to the other and back again. Game 2 - Queensland (20) @ (12) New South Wales - Due to the Superleague war, the Maroons were forced to only select players from ARL clubs and as a result were not given a chance of winning a game, let alone the series. But manager Paul Vautin contrived to win the series with a big win at the MCG. Tries from Mark Coyne, Adrian Lam and a game-sealing length of the field try from Brett Dallas on the games last play saw the Maroons stun the Blues. Game 1 - New South Wales (16) @ (34) Queensland - In the final Origin game at the old Lang Park, the Maroons did the old place proud with a big win over the Blues. New South Wales thought they had won the game when they took an 18-14 lead with 3 minutes left in the game only for Queensland to score on the last play of the game to snatch a result. Game 2 - New South Wales (6) @ (30) Queensland - After being out-muscled in Game 1, the underdog Maroons were expected to lose the series in Game 2. But Queensland turned the tables on the Blues with an explosive and dominant performance. Game 3 - Queensland (16) @ (14) New South Wales - Despite bad refereeing decisions and a tough Blues defense, Queensland claimed their 1st Origin series win since 2002. Trailing 14-4 late in the 2nd half, the Maroons fought back with a try from Brent Tate and a winning try from Captain Darren Lockyer in the 74th minute. Game 2 - Queensland (24) @ (14) New South Wales - On a historic day in Sydney, Queensland held on at the death to win the series and became the first team to win 4 series' in succession. The Blues kept the Maroons at arms length throughout a very physical game that saw Steve Price stretchered off in the final minutes after a punch from Brett White. The star was Queensland's Jonathan Thurston (4 goals) who set up 4 of the 5 tries scored by the Maroons. Game 3 - New South Wales (24) @ (34) Queensland - The Maroons clinched a record-setting 6th straight series win with a points explosion at Suncorp Stadium. Queensland came out of the blocks with a 24-0 lead which the Blues pulled back to 24-10 at the half before the Maroons put the game away with 2 more tries at the start of the 2nd half to take the win. The Queensland tries came from Greg Inglis (2), Sam Thaiday, Cameron Smith, Jharal Yow Yeh and Billy Slater. Inglis 2 tries equalled the all-time Origin try scoring record with Dale Shearer (12). The Blues tries came from Anthony Minichello, Akuila Uate, Jarryd Hayne (an 8 point try) and Greg Bird. Game 3 - New South Wales (20) @ (21) Queensland - The series decider in Brisbane went the way of the home team and Queensland extended their win streak in the competition to 7 years. Queensland held a 16-8 lead at the half and even though the Blues fought back to level the scores at 20-20 with 10 minutes left, Maroons kicker Cooper Cronk broke the Blues hearts with a game-winning field goal 4 minutes later. The Blues controlled the game, taking a 14-0 lead in at the half which they defended to the end. The game even had a fight in the 2nd half which controversially saw Queensland's Brent Tate and Justin Hodges, and New South Wales' Trent Merrin and Greg Bird sin-binned. In a physical game, both teams were evenly matched and the game was settled in the 74th minute when Cooper Cronk kicked a drop-goal to give the Maroons a one point lead. The Blues had chances to win the game in the final minutes but a Josh Dugan drop-goal attempt in the final minute missed and Queensland held on for the win. In a back-and-forth game full of niggle, the Blues won the game with a try 2 minutes from time that was converted by Paul Gallen, in his final Origin match. Game 2 - Queensland (18) @ (16) New South Wales - Queensland came back from the death to even the series with a late try. The Blues carried over their good form from the 1st game and led 16-6 at the break. But the Maroons stormed back with 12 unanswered points in the 2nd half, including the game-tieing try with 2 minutes left to play. Johnathan Thurston stepped up to score the game-winning conversion. Game 3 - New South Wales (6) @ (22) Queensland - Spurred on by a raucous home crowd, Queensland won their third consecutive series and their eleventh from the past twelve with a comfortable win in Brisbane. Queensland led 12-0 at the break but the Blues pulled a score back after the break to make it 12-6. The Maroons pushed on though, and scored 10 unanswered points to take the win.
