Finals Game 7 - Los Angeles Lakers (99) @ (113) New York Knicks - In the "winner takes all" game 7, an injured Willis Reed of the Knicks willed his team to their 1st NBA Championship. Inspired by his team-mate, Walt Frazier had a career night, scoring 36 points and dishing 19 assists. The Lakers also featured Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. Regular Season - Los Angeles Lakers (104) @ (120) Milwaukee Bucks - The Los Angeles Lakers finally had their record 33 game win streak snapped, as the Milwaukee Bucks outscored the high-powered Lakers. The Bucks led at the half 51-45 and were too much for the Lakers as they pulled away in the 2nd half. The star for the Bucks was Center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (39 points, 20 rebounds, 10 blocks) and the Bucks also featured Oscar Robertson. ABA Finals Game 5 - Indiana Pacers (105) @ (110) Kentucky Colonels - The Colonels finally won their 1st ABA title with a series-winning game 5 victory. The series MVP was Artis Gilmore. Regular Season - New York Knicks (107) @ (124) New Orleans Jazz - In an extraordinary display of shooting, Jazz Guard Pete Maravich scored 68 points (26-of-43 field goals and 16-of-19 free throws) before fouling out with 1 minute remaining. The points total is all the more impressive in that there was no 3 point shot in 1977. NBA Finals Game 6 - Philadelphia 76ers (107) @ (109) Portland Trailblazers - Portland landed it's 1st NBA title, surviving a last second tieing shot for a home-court win over the favoured 76ers. Philadelphia's Julius Erving (40 points) did all he could to force a Game 7, but the Trailblazers Bill Walton (20 points, 23 rebounds, 8 blocks, 7 assists) had a big game in reply and with the win captured the series MVP trophy. Finals Game 6 - Los Angeles Lakers (123) @ (107) Philadelphia 76ers - In his rookie season, Magic Johnson deputised for an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the Lakers looked to close out the series and win the title. Finals Game 4 - Boston Celtics (129) @ (125) Los Angeles Lakers - The Celtics were 2-1 down going into the game and needed an injection of energy to get back into contention. In the 3rd quarter the Celtics Kevin McHale clothes-lined the Lakers Kurt Rambis as Rambis went to the basket and both teams angrily squared off. Boston then bullied the Lakers into Overtime where they finished them off. Boston also featured Larry Bird (29 points, 21 rebounds) and Robert Parish. Regular Season - Chicago Bulls (110) @ (123) Philadelphia 76ers - A high-scoring shoot-out went the way of the 76ers as they out-rebounded the Bulls to avenge a loss to Chicago the previous night. The 76ers, led by Charles Barkley (42 points), went in at the half with a 66-46 lead and held off a late charge to see out the game. The Bulls were led by Michael Jordan (52 points) and Horace Grant. All Star game - West (152) v (113) East - In an emotional night in Orlando, Magic Johnson won MVP honours with a 25 pts / 9 assists game. The All Star game was the only game Magic played all year as he had retired before the season when he discovered he was HIV positive. Regular Season - Portland Trailblazers (148) @ (152) Boston Celtics - An ailing Larry Bird helped the Celtics break a 3 game losing streak with a big game in 2 overtimes against the TrailBlazers. Kevin Gamble forced the first overtime with a tieing shot at the buzzer and then Bird (49 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists) put the Celtics in front in the 2nd Overtime to see out the win. Finals Game 6 - Chicago Bulls (99) @ (98) Phoenix Suns - In a dramatic game in Phoenix, the Bulls completed an historic "Three-Peat" of NBA titles. The Bulls dominated the game through 3 quarters before going ice-cold in the 4th quarter and allowing the Suns to claw back an 8 point deficit and lead the game 98-94 with 38 seconds left. Michael Jordan (33 points) then went coast-to-coast to pull the Bulls to within 2 points and John Paxson (8 points) clinched the title with the winning 3 pointer with 3.9 seconds left. The Magic led 56-53 at the half and 85-79 with 8:47 left to play when the game turned in the Sonics favour. Sonics Guard Gary Payton (23 points, 5 assists) became involved in a tussle with the Magic's Joe Wolf and head-butted Wolf, earning himself an ejection. The loss of their leader fired up the Sonics and they fought back from a 99-93 deficit with 49 seconds left to win the game. Seattle also featured Detlef Schrempf (20 points, 5 rebounds) and Shawn Kemp (16 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists).
