Texas Div-4A Regular Season - San Angelo Bobcats (6) @ (20) Big Spring Steers - In one of the greatest upsets in Texas High School football history, Big Spring defeated the #1 team in Texas and the Nation on the day that President John F Kennedy was assassinated. San Angelo were coached by Emory Bellard and Spike Dykes was his Defensive Co-Ordinator. Big Spring were coached by Don Robbins. Big Spring got on top of the Bobcats early and led 14-6 at the half. In the 2nd half, the Steers held off the Bobcats and sealed the win with great defense in the 4th quarter. Texas 5A Final - Odessa Permian (28) v (19) PA Jefferson - The Permian Panthers claimed their 3rd State Championship in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind win over the high-scoring Yellow Jackets. PA Jefferson dominated the 1st half, leading 19-7 at the half thanks to a big half from QB Todd Dodge and WR Brent Duhon. But the Panthers dominated the 2nd half, scoring 21 unanswered points, led by QB Jerry Hix and RB Kent Sager, to take the win and upset the unbeaten Yellow Jackets (8, 1 Disc, KOSA-TV, Rogers/Harper, NTSC)

Texas Div-5A Final - Plano Wildcats (28) v (21) Houston Stratford - Plano QB Steve Needham, headed to Baylor, turned in an MVP performance to lead the Wildcats to a 2nd consecutive title (8, 2 Discs, KIII-TV - Smith/Pearson/Fowler, NTSC)

Texas Div-5A Regular Season - Midland Lee Rebels (22) @ (21) Odessa Permian Panthers - In a big upset, the Rebels of Midland Lee gave the Permian Panthers their 1st loss of the season and forced a 3 way tie at the top of the district table. The game started brightly for Permian with RB Chris Comer scoring 2 TD's and QB Mike Winchell throwing a 61 yard TD pass to WR Lloyd Hill. But the Rebels fought back with a 1 yard TD run on the last play of the half after a 43 yard pass on a Hail Mary throw. The Rebels then took the lead with a 4th quarter run. Texas 5A Regular Season - Carter Cowboys (24) @ (24) Duncanville Panthers - In a big shock at Panthers Stadium, Duncanville used a big 2nd half to shock Carter and end the Cowboys unbeaten start to the season. Carter were dominant in the 1st half on both sides of the ball and ran out to a 17-7 lead at the half. But the Cowboys took their feet off the gas in the 2nd half, and the Panthers took advantage, forcing 3 turnovers and scoring 18 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to earn the draw. Duncanville featured QB's Brian Rawlings (1 TD pass) and Jimmy Culberson (1 TD pass) and RB Kenneth Jones. Texas Div-5A Semi-Final - Dallas Carter Cowboys (14) v (9) Odessa Permian Panthers - Dallas Carter continued it's march through the Playoffs with a 14-9 come-from-behind victory over Permian in front of 10,000 fans at a rainy Memorial Stadium in Austin. Both teams played great Defense, with Permian led by DL Felipe Davila and LB Ivory Christian and Carter led by LB Jessie Armstead and DB LeShai Maston, and scoring opportunities were few. Permian opened the scoring with a 31 yard TD run, but missed the PAT. Carter responded with an 18 yard TD pass and took the lead 7-6. As the rainfall got steadily worse, Permian capitalised on a blocked Carter punt to kick a FG in the 3rd quarter to re-take the lead 9-7, but Carter kept pressing and with 11 minutes left to play in the game, they re-took the lead with a 27 yard TD pass. With a flooded field hampering any chance of a comeback, the Cowboys held on with great Defense and claimed the victory that saw them reach their first ever 5A State Championship game. Texas Div-5A Final - Dallas Carter Cowboys (31) v (14) Converse Judson Rockets - Carter completed a fairy-tale season by dominating the Rockets with stout defense. Cowboys QB Robert Hall, headed to Texas Tech, threw for 196 yards. Texas Div-5A Playoff - Lake Highlands Wildcats (33) v (36) Huntsville Hornets - In a senstional shootout at Floyd Casey stadium in Waco, the Hornets of Huntsville prevailed to book a place in the Playoff semi-finals. Both teams showed a contrast of Offensive styles with the Wildcats running the Wishbone and the Hornets using a variation of the run-and-shoot. Huntsville held a 21-20 lead at the half, and after a scoreless 3rd quarter, the teams traded scores with Huntsville scoring the game-winning TD with 15 seconds left. Huntsville were led by all-state QB Steve Clements (431 yards passing + 4 TD's), RB John Witley and WR's Hal Jackson and Tommy Barnett. Texas Div-5A Semi-Final - Tyler John Tyler Lions (48) v (44) Plano East Panthers - Plano East were down 41-17 with 3 minutes left in the game. Through a series of Touchdowns and Onside kicks they amazingly took the lead with under 30 seconds left. Texas Div-5A Final - Plano Wildcats (28) v (7) Katy Tigers - Plano won their 3rd 5A State title with a hard-nosed win at Kyle Field against the Katy Tigers. Both teams Defense's were on top in the 1st half, with Plano holding a slim 6-0 lead at the half. But the game blew wide open in the 3rd quarter, as the Wildcats ground game started to click and they scored 2 TD's to take an unassailable lead. Katy turned to the passing game late in the game, and were rewarded with a late TD but it was too little, too late. Regular Season - Marshall Mavericks (35) @ (28) Longview Lobos - In a shootout, Marshall upset #1 state-ranked Longview in 2 overtimes with a big goal-line stand. Marshall led 14-6 at the half thanks to star WR Kendrick Starling (11-141-2) who had a 100 yard kick-off return TD + a 22 yard TD catch. Longview fought back in the 2nd half as star RB Fred Talley (36-226-2) scored twice, including opening the 3rd quarter with a 65 yard TD run. In the 2nd overtime Marshall scored first with another Starling TD catch and the defense then rose to the occasion, stopping Longview on 4th-and-inches at the goal-line to secure the win. Texas Div-4A Regular Season - Joshua Owls (0) @ (63) Stephenville Yellow Jackets - At Tarleton State's Memorial Stadium, Stephenville moved to 8-1 on the season with a big win against the Owls. Led by QB Kelan Luker (15-21-292-3), WR Cody Cardwell (6-221-2 including TD catches of 81 and 75 yards) and a Defense that held the Owls to only 50 total yards of Offense, the Yellow Jackets posted a 49-0 lead at the half then cruised home in the 2nd half. Texas Div-4A Semi-Final - Stephenville Yellow Jackets (31) v (28) Southlake Carroll Dragons - In a shootout at Texas Stadium in Dallas, Stephenville advanced to the state final with a come-from-behind win in the 4th quarter. The 1st half was played even with Stephenville holding a 17-14 lead at the break. The Yellow Jackets Defense stepped up in the 2nd half but the team still found themselves down 28-24 with 3 minutes left in the game. Stephenville then found the game-winning TD pass with 1:04 left which the Defense up-held by stopping the Dragons on downs with 17 seconds left at the Jackets 35 yard line. Both teams Offense's were on fire with Stephenville putting up 476 yards and Southlake Carroll putting up 373 yards. Texas Div-4A Final - Stephenville Yellow Jackets (34) v (7) La Marque Cougars - At Texas Stadium in Dallas, Stephenville upset unbeaten La Marque's quest for 4 straight titles with a dominating win. The Cougars scored first but the Yellow Jackets took to the air in the 2nd quarter and rolled off 17 points to lead 17-7 at the half. Stephenville then dominated the 2nd half, using a great Defensive performance to shut down the Cougars while the Offense scored 17 more points. The Yellow Jackets defense only allowed 120 yards of total Offense. Texas Div-2 4A Final - Ennis Lions (21) v (0) Bay City Black Cats - Ennis completed a perfect 16-0 season and won their 2nd straight Class 4A Division II State championship with a dominating win over Bay City. Both teams were even in the 1st half and Ennis only held a 7-0 lead at the half. In the 2nd half, the Ennis Defense stepped up and shut down Bay City, allowing no first downs and only 10 yards of total Offense. The Ennis Offense ground out 2 more TD's themselves to take the win. Texas Div-5A Playoff - Houston Madison Marlins (61) v (58) North Shore Mustangs - In a shootout at the Astrodome in Houston, both teams played out one of the greatest games in Texas High School Football history. Both teams were unbeaten coming into the game, and North Shore were the #1 ranked team in the State, but it was the Marlins who out-scored the Mustangs and booked their place in the Regional Final. The teams combined for 1,135 yards of Total Offense, with the stars for each team having big games. Both teams matched each others scores in the 1st half and the Marlins took a sensational 41-38 lead in at the half. The 2nd half slowed down a little, but after Houston Madison took a decisive 54-44 lead in the 4th quarter, they held on to their lead to the end. Texas Div-5A Playoff - Austin Westlake Chaparrals (48) v (42) Houston Madison Marlins - Austin Westlake ended Houston Madison's fairytale run through the season in a shootout at the Astrodome in Houston. The Chaps used a dominant triple-option rushing attack to rush for 519 yards and 7 TD's. The Chaps started fast and held a 14-0 lead after the 1st quarter. The Marlins recovered to only trail 28-14 at the half and pulled within 6 points in the 4th quarter, but ran out of time to complete the comeback. Texas 4A Playoff - Ennis Lions (28) v (38) Highland Park Scots - The Scots scored a huge upset over the unbeaten Lions at Texas Stadium, knocking them out of the Playoffs. Highland Park were led by Sophomore QB Matthew Stafford (26-36-403-3) while Ennis were led by Junior QB Graham Harrell (39-64-405-3). Texas Div-1 5A Final - North Shore Mustangs (23) v (7) The Woodlands HighLanders - For the first time in a Final, two teams from the same metropolitan area faced off, and it was the Mustangs from North Shore that triumphed with a great all-around display. North Shore dominated the 1st half, posting a 17-0 lead at the break while holding the Highlanders to only 53 yards of total Offense. The 2nd half was more even but as the Highlanders started to find their feet, the vaunted North Shore Defense stepped up to close out the game. North Shore featured QB Robert Reid (5-10-53 + 12-113-3) and RB Justin McNeese (27-196-0). Tyler Lee scored on a 69 yard interception return while Spring Westfield scored on an 81 yard run and a 75 yard pass. Texas Div-4A Playoff - Highland Park Scots (38) v (31) Texarkana Texas High Tigers - In a shootout in Tyler, Highland Park fought back from a 17-14 deficit at the half to beat Texarkana Texas and advance to the next round of the Playoffs. The Tigers took an early 10-0 lead behind the play of QB Ryan Mallett (15-24-292-1) but Scots QB Matthew Stafford (14-23-0-411-4) put in a great performance to bring the team back with big plays in the passing game. Texas Div-4A Semi-Final - Highland Park Scots (41) v (38) Stephenville Yellow Jackets - In a shootout, Highland Park used a last minute TD to advance to the State Finals for the first time since 1957. The Scots, led by QB Matthew Stafford (21-29-336-4), held a 34-23 lead late in the game before Stephenville, led by QB Jevan Snead (16-32-272-3), scored 2 quick TD's to take a 4 point lead. But Stafford had 1 last shot to win the game and with 37 seconds left threw his 4th TD pass of the game. The Scots also scored on TD passes of 70 and 44 yards. Texas Div-1 5A Semi-Final - Austin Westlake Chapparals (35) v (32) Pearland Oilers - At Kyle Field in College Station, Westlake booked a place in the State Championship game with a shootout win over Pearland, but had to hold off a furious 4th quarter comeback to do so. Westlake held a 35-17 lead with 3:59 left in the game when Pearland suddenly found some Offense. The Oilers scored 2 TD's in quick succession to move within 3 points, but the Chaps recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock for the win. Westlake were led by QB Nick Foles (17-25-238-4) and RB Max Minor. The Dragons were down 15-7 at the half but QB Riley Dodge (16-26-303-3) threw 3 TD passes in the 2nd half for the win. The game marked the final game for Dragons coach Todd Dodge. Southlake Carroll also featured RB Tre' Newton (13-125-3 inc. 74 yard TD run). Texas 5A Playoff - Abilene High Eagles (22) v (21) Southlake Carroll Dragons - Abilene High upset Southlake Carroll and ended their 58 game win streak in the state of Texas. Carroll had a chance to win the game in the last minute but as they were setting up for an easy FG the back-up QB fumbled the snap and it was recovered by Abilene High. The back-up QB was in after the starting QB Riley Dodge left the field with an arm injury. The Eagles featured QB Spens Lackey and LB Chris Williams. Texas Regular Season - Duncanville Panthers (22) v (28) Odessa Permian Panthers - The opening game of the season for both teams saw Permian take a 28-7 lead into the 4th quarter before Duncanville suddenly found their offensive rhythm and started their comeback. Duncanville closed to within a TD and had a final chance to win after intercepting Permian with 24 seconds left but they ran out of time. Texas Div-4A Regular Season - Friendswood Mustangs (69) @ (48) La Marque Cougars - In a wild shootout, Friendswood clinched the District Championship by beating La Marque for the first time in 7 years. Friendswood QB Jacob Karam (20-26-366-7) had a huge game, equalling his school record for TD passes in a game while WR Andre Gautreaux (9-188-4) had a huge game, amassing 422 all-purpose yards. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 21-0 lead before the Cougars scored 28 points in the 2nd quarter to move within 7 points, 35-28. Texas Div-1 5A Final - Allen Eagles (21) v (14) Fort Bend Hightower Hurricanes - In a close game, Allen pulled away in the 4th quarter to win their 1st state title. The score was tied at 7-7 in the 4t quarter when Allen QB Tucker Carter (21-30-238-3) capitalised on a turnover to throw a 37 yard TD pass, then followed up with a 9 yard TD pass. But Hightower returned the ensuing kick-off 77 yards to the Allen 11 where QB AJ.Highsmith (16-29-219-1 + 11-48-0) threw a TD pass to reduce the deficit to 21-14. Texas Div-2 5A Final - Katy Tigers (17) v (3) Wylie Pirates - Katy won back-to-back titles, and their 6th title all-time, with a strong defensive effort to deny Wylie. In a low scoring 1st half, the Katy defense, led by DB Sam Holl, shut-out Wylie while the offense managed to eek out 10 points. In the 2nd half Katy, led by QB Parker Ray (9-21-89-0) added another TD while Wylie could only manage a FG. The Katy defense held Wylie to 233 total yards and recorded 6 sacks and 3 interceptions. Texas Div 5-4A Regular Season - Denton Ryan Raiders (50) @ (29) Denton Guyer Wildcats - In the local rivalry, Ryan upset Guyer to claim at least a share of the District 5-4A title. Guyer were the #2 ranked 4A team in Texas but were outclassed by a strong performance from Ryan QB Scotty Young (24-31-297-5), a Texas Tech commit, who led Ryan to scores on 6 of their last 8 possesions. Texas Div-1 5A Final - Euless Trinity Trojans (41) v (38) Austin Westlake Chaparrals - Euless Trinity claimed their 3rd title in 5 years but needed a big comeback to do so. The Trojans trailed 28-14 in the 3rd quarter but rallied to tie the game in the 4th quarter behind the play of RB's Terrence Tusan (17-106-2) and Damien Hart (17-61-2) and had a chance to win the game with a last play 48 yard FG. Texas Div-4A Regular Season - Kerrville Tivy Antlers (39) @ (34) San Antonio Madison Mavericks - In a shooutout in San Antonio, #14 ranked Kerrville continued their hot start to the season with record-setting win. The Offensive stars for each team had big games : Kerrville QB Johnny Manziel (41-75-503-4 + 78 yds and 1 TD rushing), who set a state record with his 75 pass attempts, and Madison RB Aaron Green (217 yards + 2 TDs). Texas Div-1 5A Quarter Final - Euless Trinity Trojans (41) v (40) Coppell Cowboys - In one of the best Texas High School games ever, defending champion Trinity advanced in the playoffs but only after a last play TD. Both teams were unbeaten and featured great defenses but it was the Offenses that took centre stage. Coppell led 30-21 at the half with QB Joe Minden (25-35-369-2) and RB Cam McDaniel (13-47-1) leading the way. Texas Div-1 5A Quarter Final - Desoto Eagles (48) v (72) RR Stony Point Tigers - In a shootout at the Waco ISD stadium, the Tigers advanced in the Playoffs with a dominating win over the Eagles. Led by QB Aaryn Sharp (7-11-145-2 + 11-81-1) and RB Sam Kelley (26-267-3) the Tigers broke open a tight game in the 2nd quarter with 3 consecutive TD's to lead 37-16 at the break and never looked back. Texas Div-2 5A Semi Final - Longview Lobos (27) v (28) Denton Guyer Wildcats - Longview suffered once again at the hands of Guyer, losing in the playoffs to the Wildcats for the 2nd straight year, as Guyer scored a TD with 20 seconds left to steal the win. Longview dominated the Wildcats in the 1st half, forcing turnovers on each Guyer possession, and led 17-0 at the half. But Guyer put it all together in the 2nd half, led by QB JW Walsh (13-20-202-3 + 12-77-1), and after a blocked punt with 25 seconds left Walsh threw the game winning TD pass to WR Quint Gardener (3-77-2) to break the Lobos hearts. Texas Div 2 3A Final - Carthage Bulldogs (48) v (22) Coldspring-Oakhurst Trojans - Carthage claimed their 3rd straight championship with a high-scoring win in the new Cowboys Stadium. Led by QB Anthony Morgan (16-26-389-6 inc. 57 and 85 yard TD passes), the Bulldogs led 30-22 at the half and then the Carthage defense kept the Trojans scoreless in the 2nd half to take the win. Led by junior RB Jonathan Gray (29-320-8), the Bearcats ran out to a 34-27 lead at the half then used great defense to keep the Cougars to only 7 points in the 2nd half as they cruised home. Gray's 8 TD's broke the Texas High school single season rushing TD record held by Kenneth Hall (57) since 1953. The 69 points tied the State record for most point scored in a final. Led by QB Michael Brewer (14-22-211-0 + 18-81-2) and LB Austin Williams (9 tackles) the Cavaliers jumped out to a 17-0 lead at the half and never looked back. The Cavaliers defense held the Ryan Offense without a 1st down for the entire 1st half. Texas Div-2 5A Final - Cibolo Steele Knights (24) v (21) Denton Guyer Wildcats - In the battle of 1st time finalists, it was Cibolo Steele that won out, scoring the winning TD with 2:33 left. The hero for the Knights was RB Malcolm Brown (28-107-2 + 1 TD catch) who scored all 3 of the Knights TD's. The Wildcats were led by QB JW Walsh (9-17-91-1 + 18-123-1) but he had a sub-par game and, after the Knights scored the go-ahead TD, his final attempt to tie or win the game ended with an interception. Texas Div-1 5A Final - Euless Trinity Trojans (24) v (28) Pearland Oilers - Underdog Pearland claimed their 1st ever State title in dramatic fashion, knocking off the national #1 ranked team at Cowboys Stadium. The Oilers, led by QB Trey Anderson (17-23-202-0) and RB Dustin Harrison (28-121-3), kept pace with the high-powered Trinity offense and when they finally got a 2 score lead they played great defense to close out the game and take the win. Texas Div-2 4A Final - Aledo Bearcats (49) v (28) Manvel Mavericks - On a record-setting day at Cowboys Stadium, Aledo won their third consecutive state title. The Manvel defense keyed on stopping Aledo's star RB Jonathan Gray (30-241-1), who set a National record with his 205th career TD, but the passing game stepped up to win the game for the Bearcats. Aledo QB Matthew Bishop (14-17-183-3 + 14-36-2) had a big game, leading Aledo to a 28-7 lead at the half and claiming MVP honours.
