HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL - ILLINOIS

1974
Illinois Div-5A Final - Glenbrook North Spartans (19) v (13) East St.Louis Flyers - In the 1st ever Illinois Div-5A Final, Glenbrook North upset the high-scoring Flyers from East St.Louis but needed overtime to do it. Both teams were unbeaten coming into the game. The Spartans used a great running game in the 1st half to keep the Flyers Offense off the field but the 1 turnover the Spartans had resulted in the Flyers taking a 7-6 lead in at the half. In the 2nd half, the Flyers running game took control and they took a 13-6 lead into the 4th quarter. The Spartans tied the game in sensational fashion, scoring on a 50 yard TD pass, and with neither team able to find the winning score in regulation, the game went into overtime. The IHSA rules at the time stated each team started at the 10 yard line and had 4 downs to score. The Spartans scored a TD on their possession but failed on the 2XP. The Flyers couldn't get the ball in the end-zone on their possession though and Glenbrook North celebrated the upset win. Glenbrook North were led by QB Don Broadbridge, WR Sam Poulos (1 TD catch), RB's Mike Kiepura, Greg Woodson and Pete Bohr (1 TD run) and LB Jack Moller (13 tackles + 1 catch on offense). East St.Louis were led by QB Maurice Tolson, WR's Eugene Byrd and Kellen Winslow, RB's Brian Leonard (1 TD run), Darnell Heavens and Fred Ford (1 TD run) and DL Cleveland Crosby (7 tackles, 2 for a loss) (7, Downloaded from the internet, 1 Disc, WGN-Channel 9 - West/Johnson/Brown, NTSC)
