01/01/48 - Sun Bowl - Miami (OH) (13) v (12) Texas Tech - In Redskins coach Sid Gillman's last game, the team sent him out a winner with a tight win in El Paso. Although the Redskins dominated the game, the game was tied at 6-6 at the half and Miami only led 13-6 in the 4th quarter. Texas Tech scored on a 30 yard interception return late in the game, but the Redskins blocked the PAT to preserve their lead and ran out the clock to take the win. The Redksins accounted for 414 yards of Total Offense. Miami (OH) featured QB Mel Olix, RB's Ara Parseghian (1 TD run) and Paul Shoults (1 TD run) and OL Paul Dietzel. 01/01/54 - Gator Bowl - Texas Tech (35) v (13) Auburn - High-flying Texas Tech of the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association survived a 1st half mauling by the Tigers to dominate the 2nd half and finish the season 11-1. The hero was Tech RB Bobby Cavasos (13-141-3) who had an MVP game including a 59 yard TD run. Auburn led 13-7 at the half through TD runs by RB Bobby Duke (4-37-1) and QB Vince Dooley (4-48-49-0 + 14-56-1) but the Tigers were shut-out in the 2nd half. 02/01/56 - Sun Bowl - Wyoming (21) v (14) Texas Tech - Unfancied Wyoming shocked the champions of the Border Conference, Texas Tech, with a come-from-behind win in El Paso. Tech led 14-7 in the 4th quarter when the Cowboys rallied, tieing the game on a TD pass then capitalising on a Texas Tech fumble on their own 4 yard line to run in the winning TD in the final minute. Texas Tech fumbled 5 times in the game, losing 3. Wyoming featured QB Larry Zowada (2 TD passes), RB Jim Crawford (18-103-0) and WR John Watts (1 TD catch). Texas Tech featured QB Don Williams and RB's Don Schmidt and Ronnie Herr (1 TD run). 20/09/58 - Stanford (6) @ (40) Washington State - Washington State opened their season with their largest ever win over the Indians. The Cougars controlled the game on both sides of the ball, building on a 28-6 lead at the half and coasting home. The Cougars rushed for 243 yards and passed for 211 yards on Offense and on Defense they forced 5 Stanford turnovers. Washington State were led by QB's Bob Newman (2 TD passes, 1 TD run) and Dave Wilson (1 TD pass), WR Gail Cogdill (72 yd TD catch) and RB Carl Ketchie (1 TD run). 27/09/58 - Washington State (28) @ (29) Northwestern - Despite a furious 4th quarter comeback, Washington State fell to 1-1 on the season in Evanston, Illinois. The Wildcats built on a 14-0 lead at the half to lead 29-12 with 6:54 left in the game before the Cougars fought back to score 2 unanswered converted TD's to pull within 1 point. But the Wildcats recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock. Northwestern were led by QB Dick Thornton (2 TD runs) and RB Ron Burton (2 TD runs inc. 61 yarder). Washington State were led by QB's Bob Newman (2 TD passes) and Dave Wilson (1 TD pass) and WR Gail Cogdill (2 TD catches inc. 80 yd TD catch). 04/10/58 - Washington State (14) @ (34) California - California secured their 1st win of the season with a big home win in Berkeley. Both teams were evenly matched but the Cougars suffered from turnovers at inopportune times (4 in total). The Bears ran their Split-T Option Offense to perfection in the 1st half and led 22-8 at the break before coasting home in the 2nd half. The Bears were led by QB Joe Kapp (7-11-78-0) and RB's Jack Hart (55 yard INT return TD), Billy Patton (2 TD's) and Hank Olguin (39 yd TD run). Washington State were led by QB's Bob Newman (2 TD passes) and Dave Wilson + RB LeRoy Rath (2 TD's). 11/10/58 - Washington State (8) @ (0) Idaho - Both teams put on a Defensive display in Moscow, Idaho but the visiting Cougars found just enough Offense to win the game. The Cougars dominated the game but also ran up 145 yards in penalties. The Cougars won the game with a TD catch by WR Don Ellingsen in the 4th quarter. Washington State also featured QB's Bob Newman and Dave Wilson and RB's Ed Stevens and Charles Morrell. Idaho featured QB's Joe Espinosa and Gary Farnworth, WR JD Lawson and RB Ken Hall. 18/10/58 - Washington State (6) @ (0) Oregon - In a tight, tense game in Eugene, Washington State upset the favoured Ducks on Homecoming. The Cougars used a strong running game to dominate time of possession then used a great Defensive goal-line stand late in the game to secure the win. The Cougars were led by QB's Dave Wilson, Bob Newman (1 TD run) and Geoff Price + RB's Chuck Morrell and Keith Lincoln. The Ducks were led by QB's Paul Grover and Dave Grosz and RB's Willie West, Charlie Tourville and Dave Powell. 25/10/58 - USC (14) @ (6) Washington State - In a sensational finish in Spokane, USC claimed the win with a late score. Washington State held the USC rushing attack in check throughout the game, but the Trojans won the game with a 77 yard TD pass from QB Willie Wood to RB Hilliard Hill with 1:35 left to break a 6-6 tie and win the game. The Trojans also featured QB Al Prukop and RB's Clark Holden and Jerry Pensinger. Washington State were led by QB's Bob Newman, Dave Wilson and Geoff Price and RB Chuck Morrell (1 TD run). The Cougars dominated the 1st half and led 14-0 at the break. Both teams found their feet in the 3rd quarter, combining for 38 points, but the Cougars held on for the win. Washington State were led by QB's Dave Wilson (1 TD pass) and Mike Agee (1 TD pass), RB Chuck Morrell (84 yard Kick-Off return TD) and WR Bill Steiger (2 TD catches inc. 64 yarder). 15/11/58 - Washington State (34) @ (0) Pacific - On a cold day in Stockton, California, Washington State proved too much for the Tigers and ran out comfortable winners. The Cougars dominated the 1st half and held a 22-0 lead at the half. The 2nd half saw sloppy play from both sides but the Cougars held on to win. Washington State were led by QB's Dave Wilson (1 TD pass) and Mike Agee (1 TD pass), RB's Keith Lincoln (2 TD runs) and Chuck Morrell (87 yard non-scoring run) and WR Don Ellersick (1 TD catch). The Tigers were led by star RB/QB Dick Bass (23-108-0 + 0-3-0) who had a big game running the ball but also had 3 turnovers (2 INT's + 1 Fumble). 01/01/63 - Rose Bowl - USC (42) v (37) Wisconsin - USC gave Coach Johnny McKay his first Rose Bowl victory as QB Pete Beathard threw 4 TD passes and then the defense survived a late rally by Wisconsin QB Ron VanderKelen. After conceding the opening score of the game, the Red Raiders reeled off 16 unanswered points to win the game, including 3 FG's and a 44 yard interception return for a TD. 01/01/64 - Cotton Bowl - Texas (28) v (6) Navy - The much-anticipated match-up between #1 Texas and #2 Navy ended as a one-sided affair with Texas too much for Navy. 12/11/65 - Junior Rose Bowl - Henderson County JC (TX) (15) v (20) Fullerton JC (CA) - The Texas Junior College champions faced off against the California Junior College champions in a pre-cursor to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Henderson started fast and scored 2 quick TD's but Fullerton fought back to lead 13-12 at the half. Henderson re-took the lead in the 3rd quarter with a FG but Fullerton won the game with a TD early in the 4th quarter. Henderson had 2 more chances to win the game but Fullerton used great defense to close out the game. Fullerton featured QB Dick Huff (1 TD run), RB Mike Acker and WR Rich Leon. 01/01/66 - Rose Bowl - UCLA (14) v (12) Michigan State - UCLA stunned the #1 team in the country with a big win at the Rose Bowl. Led by QB Gary Beban (8-20-147-0 + 25-14-2), UCLA took a 14-0 lead in at the half then their under-sized defense heroically held off a late Spartan comeback to take the win. Their desire to win was epitomised by game MVP Safety Bob Stiles hit on Spartans RB Bob Apisa at the goal-line to deny Michigan State the game-tieing 2 point conversion. The collision knocked Stiles out cold. UCLA also featured RB Mel Farr (10-36-0), WR Kurt Altenberg (3-55-0) and DL's Terry Donahue and Jim Colletto. 02/10/67 - Rose Bowl - Purdue (14) v (13) USC - Purdue claimed their 1st Rose Bowl win, in their first Rose Bowl visit, by beating the Trojans. Purdue, led by All American QB Bob Griese (10-18-139-0), survived a desperate last minute fightback by the Trojans as they went for 2 after their final TD to win the game. But Purdue DB George Catavolos read the danger and intercepted the pass in the end-zone to seal the win. The Trojans were led by QB Troy Winslow (12-17-174-0) and RB Don McCall (22-92-1). 18/11/67 - UCLA (20) @ (21) USC - The battle of the 2 Heisman trophy favourites saw UCLA QB Gary Beban (16-24-287-2) and USC TB OJ.Simpson (27-189-2) go head-to-head. USC and OJ won the game on a 64 yard TD run but Beban won the Heisman with a gutsy game, playing with busted ribs (6 for 1st quarter, 8 for rest of the game, Colour, 2 Discs, ABC - Schenkle/Wilkinson, PAL)

21/09/68 - Houston (20) @ (20) Texas - The opening game of the season for both teams saw history made, as the Longhorns unveiled their new Offense ; the Wishbone. Both teams started fast, with Houston RB Paul Gipson (18-173-3) running in the 1st score. Texas countered with RB Chris Gilbert (21-159-2) racing 57 yards for the tieing TD. Texas increased their lead with another Gilbert TD run in the 3rd quarter but Houston replied immediately with a 66 yard TD run from Gipson. Both teams then traded TD's and PAT misses to finish the game all tied up. 23/11/68 - Yale (29) @ (29) Harvard - Harvard trailed Yale 29-13 with 11 mins to go when Crimson back-up QB Frank Champi started the comeback. Champi threw 2 TD passes, the last as time expired, and also threw the tieing 2 point play on the last play of the game. 04/10/69 - Mississippi (32) @ (33) Alabama - Mississippi QB Archie Manning wrote his name into Ole Miss history as he put up 530 yards of total offense against a strong Alabama team. 11/10/69 - Oklahoma (17) v (27) Texas - In 93 degree heat in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, #2 ranked Texas overcame an early deficit to beat #8 ranked Oklahoma and stay unbeaten on the season. The Sooners jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, but Texas recovered to go in at the half tied at 14-14. Both Defense's rose to the challenge in the 2nd half with both teams held to FG's. But the game changed with time running down in the 4th quarter and Texas clinging to a 20-17 lead. A Longhorn punt was fumbled by Oklahoma and Texas recovered the loose ball. With 4:40 to play, the Longhorns scored the clinching TD and held on for the win. 18/10/69 - USC (14) @ (14) Notre Dame - In a hard-fought game in South Bend, Notre Dame inflicted on #3 ranked USC their only blemish on an unbeaten season. Both teams failed to make an impression in the 1st half, which ended 0-0. In the 2nd half the teams exchanged scores and, with 2 minutes left, the Irish had 1 last chance to claim the win but a 48 yard FG attempt hit the crossbar and bounced out.
