30/08/19 - Colorado State (31) v (52) Colorado - In the highest-scoring Rocky Mountain Showdown ever, Colorado won their 5th straight in the rivalry, giving new coach Mel Tucker his 1st win. Both teams were evenly matched in the 1st half and the Buffs held a slim 24-21 lead at the break. But in the 2nd half, Colorado's Running game got untracked while the Defense forced the Rams into 3 turnovers that stopped any chance the Rams had of making a comeback. 31/08/19 - South Carolina (20) v (24) North Carolina - In the opening game of the season for both teams, it was the Tarheels that gave new Head Coach Mack Brown his 1st win with a 2nd half comeback win in Charlotte. Coach Brown was starting his 2nd stint with the Tarheels, having coached them from 1988 to 1997. North Carolina also gave a 1st start to true Freshman QB Sam Howell (15-24-245-2), and after a quiet opening 3 quarters where the Tarheels trailed 20-9, he stepped up to lead the Tarheels to 15 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to take the win. 31/08/19 - Oregon (21) v (27) Auburn - In a wild game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, #16 ranked Auburn upset #11 ranked Oregon with a last-gasp TD. Oregon thought they had the game won, leading 21-6 late in the 3rd quarter, but that was when Auburn's Freshman QB Bo Nix (13-31-177-2 + 7-42-0), making his college debut, came to life. He led the Tigers to 3 unanswered scores, including the game-winning 26 yard TD pass with 9 seconds left in the game. 31/08/19 - Fresno State (23) @ (31) USC - USC opened their season with a win in the Coliseum, but it was bitter-sweet as they lost their starting QB for the season to injury. USC QB JT Daniels (25-34-215-1), guided by new Offensive Co-ordinator Graham Harrell, had a big 1st half until Daniels hurt his knee in the last minute of the half and the Trojans leading 17-10. Back-Up QB Kedon Slovis (6-8-57-0) played well in relief and leaned heavily on the running game in the 2nd half, but still needed the Defense to close out the game. Fresno State scored 10 points in the 4th quarter to pull within 3, but USC sealed the win with a late interception to give coach Clay Helton a much-needed win. 01/09/19 - Houston (31) @ (49) Oklahoma - In the opening game of the season for #4 ranked Oklahoma, new Sooners QB Jalen Hurts had a sensational debut. Hurts (20-23-332-3 + 16-176-3), a transfer from Alabama, on his own accounted for 506 yards of total Offense and helped the Sooners gain 686 yards as a team. Oklahoma jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter and never looked back, going in at the break with a 28-10 lead and, at the end of the 3rd quarter, they were ahead 42-17. Houston did make the score more respectable with 2 scores in the 4th quarter, but the Sooners were never troubled and ran out easy winners. 07/09/19 - BYU (29) @ (26) Tennessee - BYU rescued their season with a sensational come-back win in Knoxville, stunning the Volunteers in 2 Overtimes. Tennessee dominated the game on both sides of the line of scrimmage but the BYU Defense forced the Vols into FG's rather than TD's and gave themselves a chance late in the game. BYU used a last minute 64 yard pass to set up a game-tieing FG with 1 second left that forced Overtime, then completed the comeback in the 2nd Overtime with a TD run that answered a Tennessee FG. The star for BYU was QB Zach Wilson (19-29-232-1), and the Cougars also featured RB Ty'Son Williams (17-92-2), WR Micah Simon (7-127-0) and LB Kavika Fonua (10 tackles). 07/09/19 - Texas A&M (10) @ (24) Clemson - #1 ranked Clemson welcomed #12 Texas A&M into Memorial Stadium and dominated the Aggies en-route to their 17th straight win, a team record. The Tigers Offense rolled up 389 yards of Offense while the Defense forced 2 turnovers and held the Aggies to 53 yards rushing. Clemson dominated the opening 3 quarters on both sides of the ball, scoring 24 unanswered points after giving up an opening drive FG to the Aggies, and cruised home to the win. 07/09/19 - LSU (45) @ (38) Texas - In an early season battle of two teams in the Top-10, it was the visiting #6 ranked Tigers who won a shootout against the #9 ranked Longhorns. On a blistering hot day in Austin, it was LSU that came out on fire and raced out to a 20-7 lead at the break. Texas re-grouped at the half and fought back in the 2nd half, pulling to within 2 points. But LSU held on and a late TD ensured they left Texas with a win. 07/09/19 - Stanford (20) @ (45) USC - Freshman USC QB Kedon Slovis made his 1st ever start a memorable one, leading the Trojans to a dominating win over the #23 ranked Cardinal. Slovis (28-33-377-3) set the USC passing yards record for a QB making his 1st start, as he led the Trojans back from an 14 point deficit at the start of the 2nd quarter by out-scoring Stanford 45-3 the rest of the way. USC rolled up 492 yards of total Offense. Stanford Freshman QB Davis Mills (22-36-237-1) was also making his 1st ever start. 13/09/19 - Washington State (31) @ (24) Houston - #20 ranked Washington State overcame a slow start to pull away from Houston in the 2nd half and claim a victory in the Texas Kick-Off Classic. Houston took a 14-7 lead in at the half, but Washington State out-scored Houston 24-3 in the 2nd half until Houston scored a late TD to make the last 2 minutes interesting. Washington State held on to the ball though, and ran out the clock to move to 3-0 on the season. 14/09/19 - Pittsburgh (10) @ (17) Penn State - In the 100th meeting between the 2 schools separated by only 139 miles, #13 ranked Penn State survived a 4th quarter comeback from the Panthers to claim State bragging rights. Both teams were evenly matched and went in at the break tied 10-10, but after Penn State scored the go-ahead TD in the 3rd quarter, Pitt ended up chasing the game. With 4:54 to go in the game, and with Pitt at the Penn State 1 yard line on 4th down, Pitt controversially decided to go for the FG and missed. They did get 1 more chance to force overtime on the final drive of the game, but a last-play "Hail Mary" pass fell incomplete and the Nittany Lions celebrated the win. Kentucky were in charge for 3 quarters, keeping the Gators in check while rolling up a 21-10 lead at the start of the 4th quarter. But when Gators QB Felipe Franks (12-17-174-1 + 8-23-0) was knocked out of the game with a broken ankle, back-up QB Kyle Trask (9-13-126-0) came in and galvanised the team, leading them to 3 unanswered TD's in the 4th quarter and the emotional win. The 4th quarter belonged to the Wildcats though, as they broke Texas Tech with 2 TD drives of 75 yards and 99 yards, to take a 14 point lead that they defended to the end. Texas A&M switched from the ground game to the passing game in the 4th quarter, and it paid dividends as they moved to within 8 points with 2 minutes to play, but the Tigers recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock to take the win. Notre Dame had the better of the 1st half and took a slim 10-7 lead in at the half, but Georgia scored 16 unanswered points to take control of the game in the 2nd half. A late Notre Dame rally closed the game to within a score, but a final 4th-down desperation pass fell incomplete and Georgia held on for the victory. 05/10/19 - Auburn (13) @ (24) Florida - In a battle of unbeatens, it was #10 ranked Florida that left the game with their record intact, upsetting #7 ranked Auburn in Gainesville. The Gators used a dominating Defensive performance to shut down the Tigers Offense, forcing 4 turnovers and holding Auburn to 269 yards of total Offense as well as pitching a shut-out in the 2nd half. The Gators Offense played their part too, rolling up 398 yards of total Offense and scoring the clinching TD in the 4th quarter on the longest run by a Gator since 1988 (88 yards). Both teams combined for 1,071 yards of total Offense with Memphis also setting a Bowl game record with 6 FG's. Both teams were evenly matched, but Penn State used a 28 point 2nd quarter to take a decisive 35-23 lead in at the half, then held off the Tigers the rest of the way to take the win. 28/12/19 - Peach Bowl - Oklahoma (28) v (63) LSU - A highly anticipated College Football Playoff Semi-Final didn't disappoint, as #1 seed LSU dominated #4 seed Oklahoma to book their place in the Playoff Final. LSU dominated the 1st half and led 49-14 at the break, effectively ending the game as a contest. Oklahoma did score 2 TD's in the 2nd half to make the score more respectable but the result was never in doubt. LSU were led by newly crowned Heisman-Trophy-winning QB Joe Burrow (29-39-493-7 + 5-21-1) and he was on fire, setting an NCAA record for TD passes in a half (7). His favourite target was WR Justin Jefferson (14-227-4) who set the College Football Playoff single-game record for TD catches (4) and the Peach Bowl record for receiving yards (227 yards). 28/12/19 - Fiesta Bowl - Ohio State (23) v (29) Clemson - The showdown between the 2 heavyweights of the Playoffs didn't disappoint as #3 seed Clemson fought back from an early deficit to beat #2 seed Ohio State and extend their win streak to 29 games. With the win, Clemson advanced to the College Football Playoff title game for the 4th time in 5 years. Ohio State started the game on fire and raced out to a 16-0 lead half-way through the 2nd quarter. But Clemson fought back with 21 unanswered points to seize control of the game and take a 21-16 lead into the 4th quarter. The Buckeyes took the lead again but the Tigers countered with an epic 94 yard TD drive to score the game-winning TD with 1:49 left. Ohio State had one last chance to take the win and drove down to the Clemson 23 yard line, but with 37 seconds left they threw their 2nd interception of the game and the Tigers celebrated the win. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game, and with the game tied at 20-20 as the last play began and the Hilltoppers 39 yards from the end-zone, Overtime seemed on the cards. A last play "Hail Mary " fell incomplete but a Defensive penalty gave Western Kentucky 1 more un-timed play. Up stepped Freshman kicker Cory Munson and he crushed a 52 yard FG to win the game. 31/12/19 - Liberty Bowl - Navy (20) v (17) Kansas State - Navy completed a remarkable turnaround from a 3-10 season in 2018 to win their 11th game of 2019 against Kansas State in Memphis, Tennessee. Navy out-gained Kansas State on Offense by 421 yards to 170 yards but the Wildcats took their chances to score when it mattered, and were tied at 17-17 late in the 4th quarter. The game turned on a gutsy 4th-down-and-3 call at the Wildcats 46 with 29 seconds to play, when the Middies ran a Half-Back pass play that went all the way to the Kansas State 5 yard line. After spiking the ball, Navy lined up and kicked the game-winning FG with 2 seconds to play. 31/12/19 - Belk Bowl - Virginia Tech (30) v (37) Kentucky - A very chippy game at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina ended in sensational fashion, as the Wildcats used an epic final drive to win the game in the last seconds. In the pre-game warm-ups both teams clashed, with punches thrown. But in the game, the knockout punches were supplied by Kentucky QB Lynn Bowden Jr. (6-12-73-1 + 34-233-2) who ran rings around the Hokies, then finished them off with an 18-play, 85-yard game-winning drive that took more than eight minutes off the clock and ended with him throwing the game-winning TD pass with 15 seconds remaining. The 1st half ended up a shootout with the Gophers taking a slim 24-17 lead in at the half. The 2nd half was a more Defensive showdown with only 2 TD's scored. Auburn tied the game in the 3rd quarter before Minnesota re-took the lead with a 73 yard TD pass early in the 4th quarter. The Gophers used great Defense and ball-control Offense the rest of the way to take the win and secure their first 11-win season since 1904. The Badgers wasted a dominant performance from their Defense and failed to capitalize on its advantages in time of possession (38:03 to 21:57) and total yards gained (322 yards to 204 yards) as they were let down by turnovers at inopportune times. The Ducks scored 21 points off of the Badgers' 4 turnovers, including a 31-yard fumble return for a TD off of a botched punt. Wisconsin held a 27-21 lead early in the 4th quarter, but Oregon QB Justin Herbert (14-20-138-0 + 9-29-3) finally found his rhythm with 7:41 to play, and he scrambled 30 yards on the ground to score the go-ahead TD that turned out to be the game-winning score. The Bulldogs dominated the 1st half, going in at the break with a 19-0 lead. The Bears came out of the break fired up and found some Offense, scoring 2 TD's in the quarter to close the gap to 26-14, but the Bears hopes faded when in the 4th quarter QB Charlie Brewer (21-41-211-1) was knocked out of the game with an injury. 2nd string QB Jacob Zeno (4-9-23-0) couldn't rally the Bears against the strong Bulldogs Defense and Georgia held on for the win. 04/01/20 - Armed Forces Bowl - Southern Mississippi (13) v (30) Tulane - For the first time in school history, Tulane won Bowl games in consecutive seasons, but needed a big comeback in Fort Worth to do so. Southern Mississippi started fast and took a 13-0 lead in the 1st quarter. But the game changed for the Golden Eagles when they lost their QB and top RB to injury before the break. Tulane took advantage in the 2nd half, scoring 24 unanswered points to wrestle the game back in their favour and they saw out the game for the win. 11/01/20 - FCS Title Game - James Madison (20) v (28) North Dakota State - On a record-setting day in Frisco, Texas, North Dakota State thwarted the upset-minded Dukes to win their 16th game of the season. With the win the Bison won their 8th FCS National Championship, a record, and extended their FCS record win-streak to 37 games. The Dukes came ready to play, and were in the game right to the very end, but a last minute drive ended in an interception in the end-zone and the Bison held on for the win. The Dukes also had trouble containing Walter Payton Award-winning Bison QB Trey Lance (6-10-72-0 + 30-166-1) who had a huge game en-route to the MVP award. North Dakota State also featured RB Adam Cofield (7-24-1) and WR Noah Gindorff (1-22-0). 13/01/20 - College Football Playoff National Championship - Clemson (25) v (42) LSU - LSU completed a dream season, winning their 4th National Championship in a dominating win in New Orleans. Clemson started the better, running out to a 17-7 lead in the 2nd quarter before the LSU Offense got un-tracked and rattled off 21 unanswered points to go in at the half with a 28-17 lead. Clemson pulled within 3 after the break but the game turned when Clemson's Defensive star LB James Skalski was ejected for targeting. LSU turned this to their advantage and scored the final 14 points of the game to finish off Clemson and take the win. The loss ended Clemson's win streak at 29 games. The star for LSU was QB Joe Burrow (31-49-463-5) who set several records including NCAA single season TD passes (60), most passing yards in a title game (463) and most passing TD's in a title game (5).
