COLLEGE FOOTBALL - 1999 SEASON
09/09/99 - Washington (28) @ (35) BYU - BYU opened their 1st season in the Mountain West Conference with a big inter-conference win over Washington. BYU ran out to a 20-7 lead in the 3rd quarter thanks to QB Kevin Feterik (39-59-500-3) and Freshman RB Lucas Staley (8-39-2) before the Huskies offense started to get going. Huskies QB Marques Tuiasosopo (22-36-237-1 + 13-35-2) led the fightback with 2 TD runs and a TD pass but couldn't stop the Cougars from driving to the game winning TD pass with 1:16 left, caught by WR Chris Hale, his 1st collegiate catch. BYU also featured WR Margin Hooks (8-141-1) (8, 2 Discs, ESPN - Tirico/Corso/Herbstreit, PAL)
11/09/99 - Georgia Tech (35) @ (41) Florida State - In a match-up of Heisman hopefuls, it was Florida State's WR Peter Warrick (8-142-1 + 1 TD run) that won out. Georgia Tech QB Joe Hamilton (22-25-387-4) was awesome in defeat (9, 2 Discs, ABC - Brant/Blevins/Arute, PAL)
11/09/99 - Notre Dame (23) @ (28) Purdue - #21 ranked Notre Dame failed in their upset bid of #16 ranked Purdue, running out of time on the Purdue 2 yard line. The Irish had 2 chances to win the game from the 2 yard line but were turned away and on the final attempt couldn't snap the ball in time before the clock ran out. Purdue QB Drew Brees (24-40-317-1 + 1 TD run) had a big game and avenged his loss to the Irish in 1998. Purdue also featured DL Akin Ayodele and LB Mike Rose. Notre Dame were led by QB Jarious Jackson (22-34-267-1 + 2 TD runs) and RB Tony Fisher (14-63-0) (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Musberger/Fouts/Tarkenton, PAL)
18/09/99 - Louisiana Tech (29) @ (28) Alabama - Louisiana Tech QB Tim Rattay (27-50-368-3) was having a awesome game when he left he game in the 4th quarter. Back-up QB Brian Stallworth entered the game and threw the winning 28 yard TD with only 2 seconds left on the clock to beat the #18 ranked Tide (8, 2 Discs, CSSE - Crane/Layton/Stewart, NTSC)
25/09/99 - Oklahoma (42) @ (21) Louisville - Oklahoma QB Josh Heupel (29-42-429-5) set a school record with 429 yards passing as Oklahoma scored the final 28 points to win the game. Louisville QB Chris Redman (24-49-292-2) had a quiet game against a strong Sooner defense (8, 2 Discs, FOX - Kennedy/Matich/Johnson, PAL)
25/09/99 - UCLA (32) @ (42) Stanford - In a shootout, Stanford upset #18 ranked UCLA and laid to rest their loss to the Bruins in 1998. Stanford started the game with QB Todd Husak (6-8-141-0) but he left the game in the 2nd quarter due to injury and was replaced by back-up QB Joe Borchard (15-19-0-324-5), and he had a huge game in relief. Borchard's favourite target was WR Troy Walters (9-278-3 inc. 98 yard TD catch). 01/10/99 - Alabama (40) @ (39) Florida - Alabama handed Florida their first home loss in 30 games as they took the Gators into overtime and benefited from a missed Florida PAT to win. Alabama also missed their PAT but an off-side penalty allowed a re-kick that was made. Alabama were led by QB Andrew Zow (28-40-336-2) and RB Shaun Alexander (28-106-4), including the winner in OT. Florida were led by QB Doug Johnson (22-31-309-4) including a 73 yard TD pass (8, 1 Disc, CBS - McDonough/Blackledge/Tafoya, NTSC)
02/10/99 - San Jose State (44) @ (39) Stanford - For the 2nd straight season San Jose State upset their neighbours, using a great Offensive performance to win the game. The Spartans were missing their star RB Deonce Whitaker to injury so they turned to the passing game where QB Chris Kasteler (24-43-368-2) and WR Steven Pulley (15-255-2) both had big games. San Jose State held a 17-15 lead at the half but managed to pull away with 2 TD's in the final 5 minutes of the game. Stanford scored late to close the gap to 5 points but couldn't recover the on-side kick with 1:47 left and the Spartans held on for the win. Stanford QB Joe Borchard (19-37-313-2), who was making his 1st career start, had a big game but ran out of time to complete the comeback. 02/10/99 - Texas A&M (19) @ (21) Texas Tech - Tech knocked of the unbeaten Aggies for the 3rd straight time at Jones Stadium as Tech RB Sammy Morris (33-170-1) shredded the nations top rushing defense. Tech scored all their points in the 2nd quarter (8, 2 Discs, FOX - Thulin/Gigantino/Clemons, PAL)
09/10/99 - Oklahoma (28) v (38) Texas - #23 ranked Texas rallied from an early deficit to beat Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. Oklahoma started fast and ran new Offensive Co-Ordinator Mike Leach's Offense to perfection, running out to a 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter. Texas rallied to score 24 unanswered points though and took a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Oklahoma tried to rally themselves but Texas used great Defense to hold on and take the win. 09/10/99 - Michigan (31) @ (34) Michigan State - The annual in-state grudge match turned into a shootout as #11 ranked Michigan State upset # 3 ranked Michigan. The stars for the Spartans were QB Bill Burke (21-36-400-2) and WR Plaxico Burress (10-255-1). Both sets of yardage set school records. The Spartans held a 27-10 lead in the 3rd quarter before Michigan countered with 3 TD's in the 4th quarter to pull within 3 points but Michigan State held on for the win. 23/10/99 - Duke (24) @ (31) North Carolina State - NC State avoided a big upset attempt by the Blue Devils with an overtime win in Raleigh. The Wolfpack needed a 50 yard FG on the last play of the game to force overtime then the Defense stepped up to keep Duke from scoring and sealed the win with a 4th down defensive stand. The heroes for Duke were QB Spencer Romine (19-38-265-1) and RB B.J. 23/10/99 - Illinois (35) @ (29) Michigan - Illinois stunned the #9 ranked Wolverines, overturning a 27-7 deficit in the 3rd quarter with 3 TD's in the 4th quarter. Illinois QB Kurt Kittner (24-33-280-4) was the hero, leading the Illini with 3 TD passes in the 2nd half. He also had help from RB Rocky Harvey (17-106-1 + 2-61-1) who had a big game. Michigan were led by QB Tom Brady (23-38-307-2) and he shared time with Drew Henson. Michigan also featured RB Anthony Thomas (21-128-2) and WR's Marcus Knight (7-134-1) and David Terrell (4-64-0). 23/10/99 - Stanford (35) @ (31) USC - In a shoot-out in the Coliseum, Stanford recovered from a 24-7 deficit in the 1st half to win the game and stay unbeaten in PAC-10 play. USC used a record-setting day from QB Mike Van Raaphorst (25-51-415-3) to put Stanford in trouble but Cardinal QB Todd Husak (20-32-290-2) pulled his team back into contention then won the game for them on a 1 yard run in the 4th quarter. Van Raaphorst had 1 more chance to win the game but he was intercepted on the Cardinal 7 yard line on the last play of the game. USC also featured RB Chad Morton (22-151-1), WR's Kareem Kelly (8-129-0) and RJ Soward (5-92-1) and, on defense, DL Ifeanyi Ohalete (9 tackles), LB Michael Murray (12 tackles) and DB David Gibson (7 tackles). 30/10/99 - Stanford (30) @ (35) Washington - On a record setting day in Seattle, Washington upset #25 Stanford for a big conference win. The Huskies overturned a 17-12 deficit at the half behind the play of QB Marques Tuiasosopo (19-32-302-1 + 22-207-2) who became the first QB to have 300 yards passing and 200 yards rushing in the same game. He was helped by a strong rushing attack from RB Maurice Shaw (19-113-1). Washington also featured TE Jeramy Stevens (5-88-0) and WR Dane Looker (3-46-0). 06/11/99 - Minnesota (24) @ (23) Penn State - Minnesota stunned #2 Penn State, kicking a 32 yard FG on the last play of the game to end the Nittany Lions National Championship hopes. 06/11/99 - Virginia Tech (22) @ (20) West Virginia - Unbeaten and #3 ranked Tech needed an amazing last minute drive to set up a last play 44 yard FG that kept then unbeaten. 06/11/99 - Hawaii (62) @ (41) San Jose State - In a shootout, both teams combined for 61 points in the 4th quarter and, with the victory, Hawaii became bowl eligible. Hawaii QB Dan Robinson (26-46-371-4) had a big game, pacing the Warriors to a 35-7 lead at the start of the 4th quarter. But San Jose State fought back to 49-33 on the arm of QB Chris Kasteler (28-52-359-4) before Hawaii sealed the win with 2 more TD's. Hawaii also featured RB Avion Weaver (16-125-1). 20/11/99 - Oklahoma (28) @ (38) Texas Tech - In Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes last game, the Red Raiders overcame a 21-10 deficit to score 28 unanswered points and secure the win. 20/11/99 - California (13) @ (31) Stanford - In the annual "Big Game", Stanford continued their 5 year dominance over Cal and clinched a spot in the Rose Bowl for the first time in 27 years. Stanford led 21-13 at the break but the defense, led by DL Willie Howard, kept Cal scoreless in the 2nd half to seal the win. Stanford were led by QB Todd Husak (11-26-216-1), RB Casey Moore (6-116-2 inc. a 94 yard TD run) and WR Troy Walters (6-126-0). Cal were led by QB Wes Dalton (11-25-119-0) and DB Deltha O'Neal, who accounted for all of Cal's points on Special Teams with a 100 yard kick-off return TD and a 58 yard punt return TD. 21/11/99 - Navy (41) @ (48) Hawaii - Hawaii recorded the greatest turnaround in NCAA history by winning their 8th game one year after not winning any games. But they were made to work for it as Navy fought back from a 41-27 deficit in the 4th quarter to tie the game. Navy rushed for 451 total yards, with QB Brian Madden (29-150-2) and RB Raheem Lambert (18-120-1) leading the way. 25/11/99 - Mississippi (20) @ (23) Mississippi State - #19 ranked Mississippi State re-claimed the Egg Bowl in dramatic fashion, scoring 10 points in the final 27 seconds to steal the win from their big in-state rivals. The #24 ranked Rebels opened up a 20-6 lead with QB Romero Miller (13-27-150-2) and RB Deuce McAllister (36-134-0) controlling the tempo of the game and the Defense forcing 5 turnovers. But the Bulldogs suddenly found some offense in the 4th quarter as QB Wayne Madkin (20-33-233-2) and WR Kelvin Love (7-75-0) found their rhythm and tied the game up with 27 seconds remaining. 27/11/99 - Georgia (48) @ (51) Georgia Tech - In a wild game, #16 ranked Georgia Tech finally finished off #21 ranked Georgia in overtime. The Yellow Jackets led 41-24 in the 3rd quarter before Georgia, behind the play of QB Quincy Carter (29-55-345-2) and RB Jasper Sanks (17-81-1), rallied to tie the game at 48-48. Sanks had a chance to win the game with 13 seconds left but fumbled the ball at the Georgia Tech 1 yd line. Tech took advantage of the fumble to finish off the Bulldogs in Overtime. Stanford kicker Mike Biselli kicked a 22 yard FG on the last play of the game for the win but big plays from both sides of the ball contributed to the victory. Cardinal QB Todd Husak (24-34-334-2) and WR Troy Walters (8-183-2) had big games for the Offense and DL Willie Howard and LB Riall Johnson paced the Defense. 03/12/99 - MAC Championship - Western Michigan (30) @ (34) Marshall - #11 ranked Marshall cameback from a 20-0 deficit at the half to win the MAC and advance to the Motor City Bowl. Western Michigan QB Tim Lester (27-41-282-2) and RB Robert Sanford (32-163-1) rolled up 276 yards of total offense in the 1st half before Marshall adjusted at the half and held them to only 7 points after the break. Marshall QB Chad Pennington (20-31-284-3 + 7-31-0) brought the offense to life in the 2nd half with 3 TD passes, the last of which came with 4 seconds left and won the game. 11/12/99 - Div-2 National Championship - NW Missouri St (58) v (52) Carson-Newman - NWM cameback from a 24-7 half-time deficit to force overtime with a last second TD pass. Both teams battled through 4 overimes before the Bearcats stopped Carson-Newman. The Bearcats scord 30 points in the 4th quarter, with QB Travis Miles (24-45-298-5) the main threat (9, JIP 1st Drive of the game, no scoring missed, 3 Discs, ESPN - Barnett/Curry, PAL)
27/12/99 - Motor City Bowl - Marshall (21) v (3) BYU - #11 ranked Marshall completed their regular season unbeaten (13-0) with a low-scoring win against the MWC co-champions, #25 ranked BYU. Marshall QB Chad Pennington (17-28-207-1), in his last college game, had a quiet night but lasted longer than his opposite number, BYU QB Kevin Feterik (6-11-125-0), who left the game with an injury in the 3rd quarter. The star for Marshall was RB Doug Chapman (14-133-2) who scored all 3 Marshall TD's including an 87 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter (7, 2 Discs, ESPN - Barnett/Curry, PAL)
01/01/00 - Orange Bowl - Michigan (35) v (34) Alabama - In the first ever overtime BCS Bowl game, #8 ranked Michigan beat #5 ranked Alabama at Pro Player Stadium in Miami. In a sloppy game dominated by penalties (10 for Michigan, 18 for Alabama), Michigan twice had to rally from 14-point deficits in the opening 3 quarters, but dominated the 4th quarter. The Wolverines blew 2 chances to win the game in the 4th quarter, losing a fumble at the Tide goal-line and missing a last play FG, sending the game into Overtime. Both teams scored a TD but the Tide missed their PAT and the Wolverines celebrated the win. Michigan featured QB Tom Brady (34-46-369-4) in his final college game, RB Anthony Thomas (18-40-1), WR David Terrell (10-150-3) and LB Ian Gold. 01/01/00 - Rose Bowl - Wisconsin (17) v (9) Stanford - Wisconsin became the first Big 10 team to claim back-to-back Rose Bowl wins with a come-from-behind win against Pac-10 champs, Stanford. Game MVP was again Wisconsin TB Ron Dayne (34-200-1). The Badgers were down 9-3 at the half but kept the high-powered Stanford Offense scoreless in the 2nd half to seal the win. Wisconsin also featured QB Brooks Bollinger (7-14-105-0 + 12-9-1) and WR Chris Chambers (5-76-0). 05/01/00 - Sugar Bowl - Florida State (46) v (29) Virginia Tech - Florida State claimed his 2nd National Championship and his first unbeaten season with a big win over the underdog Hokies. Florida State ran out to a 28-14 lead at the half, thanks to 2 TD's from MVP WR Peter Warrick (6-163-2) ; a 64 yard TD pass and a 59 yard punt return TD. The Hokies staged a 3rd quarter fight-babck led by Freshman QB Michael Vick (15-29-225-1 + 23-97-1) but the Seminoles closed the deal with a dominating 4th quarter. The Seminoles also featured QB Chris Weinke (20-34-329-4), TB Travis Minor (9-35-0 + 2-23-0) and a defense led by Corey Simon, Tommy Polley and Derrick Gibson. Virginia Tech also featured WR Andre Davis (7-108-1) and DL Corey Moore and John Engelberger (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Musberger/Danielson, PAL)
