COLLEGE FOOTBALL - 1993 SEASON 

11/09/93 - Hawaii (38) @ (41) BYU - In a shootout between the old rivals, BYU won the game on a 40 yard FG with 23 secs left. The kick came after Hawaii had missed a potential game-winning 21 yard FG of their own with 39 seconds left. BYU turned the miss into a game-winning drive with QB John Walsh (19-36-262-3 + 5 INT's) throwing a 60 yard pass to set up the kick. BYU won the 1st half 31-21 but Hawaii dominated the 2nd half with QB's Michael Carter (7-14-98) and Ivin Jasper running the option perfectly aided by RB's Calvin Melvin (172 yards) and Brian Gordon (166 yards) and the defense forcing QB Walsh into 5 turnovers. But BYU hung tough and turned the missed kick to their advantage and stunned the Islanders (8, Missing opening Kick-off + 1st Hawaii play + 2nd half kick-off, 2 Discs, KBYUTV - Monsen, NTSC)

18/09/93 - Tennessee (34) @ (41) Florida - #9 Florida upset #5 Tennessee in a shootout in Gainesville, extending their home win streak to 20 games. Florida QB Danny Wuerffel (19-38-231-3) started his first collegiate game and played well, with support from RB Errict Rhett (147 yards + 2 TD's). The Gators opened up a 21-0 lead before Tennessee QB Heath Shuler (25-41-355-5), who had a huge game, brought the Vols back to within 7 with 2 minutes remaining. But as the rain started to fall, the Gators recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock to take the win (8, For the last 1:10 of the game the picture quality gets worse as the weather worsens - no scoring missed, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Arute, NTSC)

18/09/93 - West Virginia (42) @ (37) Maryland - In a shootout in College Park, West Virginia survived a late comeback by the Terrapins to win the game. Mountaineers QB Jake Kelchner (15-19-270-2) led his team to a 35-23 lead in the 4th quarter but had to watch as Maryland QB Scott Milanovich (35-54-451-5) mounted a late surge to pull within 5 points with 2:47 left. The Mountaineers recovered the resulting onside kick, though, and ran out the clock to take the win. Maryland also featured WR Jermaine Lewis (6-145-3) (7, Grainy picture with occasional jump - mostly in the 1st half, 2 Discs, MSN - Caridi/Garcia, NTSC)

18/09/93 - Colorado (37) @ (41) Stanford - Colorado, led by QB Kordell Stewart and RB Rashaan Salaam, dominated Stanford early with a punishing ground attack. But Stanford, behind QB Steve Stenstrom (5 TD passes) rallied to win the game with a controversial TD pass with 8 seconds left (9, 2 Discs, ESPN - Nessler/Danieson/Walker, PAL)

25/09/93 - Texas Tech (26) @ (28) Baylor - In a shootout in Waco, the Bears came back from a 12 point deficit to beat the Red Raiders and move to 3-1 on the season. Both teams combined for 960 yards of total offense. Texas Tech led 9-7 at the half and 26-14 at the start of the 4th quarter, thanks to QB Robert Hall (301 yards total offense), WR Lloyd Hill and RB Byron Morris (23-174-1). But the Bears capitalised on turnovers to score 2 unanswered TD's to win the game. Baylor were led on Offense by QB JJ Joe (245 yards total Offense), RB John Henry (2 TD runs of 3 and 4 yards) and WR Ben Bronson (2 TD catches of 36 and 44 yards) and on Defense by DL Daryl Gardener. Texas Tech also featured LB's Zach Thomas (17 tackles), Anthony Armour and Shawn Banks (8, 2 Discs, Raycom - Barnett/Teaff, NTSC)

02/10/93 -
Oregon (41) @ (42) California
- In a wild shootout, the Ducks jumped out to a 30-0 1st half lead and seemed to be coasting when the Bears, led by QB Dave Barr, suddenly put it all together and started to peg back the Ducks. With 5 minutes left the Bears still trailed 41-34 left but had the ball and drove for the winning TD. With 1:17 left the Bears completed the comeback with the TD and the 2 point conversion (8, 2 Discs, Sportschannel - Fonzi/Bouza, NTSC)

09/10/93 -
Miami (10) @ (28) Florida State
- In a battle of 2 of college football's heavyweights, # 3 ranked Miami travelled to # 1 Florida State. Florida State got off to a big start with a 69 yard TD run and a 72 yard TD pass. Miami hung around with QB Frank Costa (21-43-193-1) pulling the strings put couldn't get past the swarming Seminole defense and his day ended with a 40 yard interception returned for the clinching TD. Florida State QB Charlie Ward (21-31-256-1 + 1 TD run) ran the show magnificently and helped the Seminoles beat the 'Canes for the 1st time since 1989 (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Swann, PAL)

30/10/93 - Michigan (10) @ (13) Wisconsin - On a day of highs and lows, Wisconsin finally ended their losing streak against Michigan and all but booked a place in the Rose Bowl, their first in 31 years. The Badgers held a 13-3 lead at the half thanks to an Offense led by QB Darrell Bevell (15-22-118-0) and RB's Brent Moss (26-128-0) and Terrell Fletcher (12 yard TD run) while the Defense, led by LB Yusef Burgess and DB's Jeff Messenger and Kenny Gales, kept the Wolverines in check. But the 2nd half saw Michigan push for the win, led by QB Todd Collins (21-31-248-1) and WR Derrick Alexander (1 TD catch), only to come up short at the end. As the game ended, the Wisconsin student section surged forward and 73 people were crushed, 6 of them critically. 06/11/93 - Florida State (49) @ (20) Maryland - #1 ranked Florida State clinched its 2nd consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference title with a tough win at Byrd Stadium. The Terps gave the Noles all they could handle, putting up 453 yards of total Offense on the #1 defense in the country. But the Noles won the game with Offense, putting up 526 yards of their own, led by QB Danny Kanell in his 1st career start. Kanell (28-38-341-5) had a huge game in place of injured starter Charlie Ward, throwing for 5 TD passes. The Noles only led 21-13 at the half, but Kanell threw 2 TD passes in the 2nd half and the Defense held the Terps to only 7 points and the Noles pulled away for the win. Florida State also featured RB Sean Jackson (12-95-1 + 2-15-1), Warrick Dunn (10-46-0) and William Floyd (7-45-0), WR's Kez McCorvey (10-122-1) and Kevin Knox (5-89-2), DL Derrick Alexander and LB Derrick Brooks. Maryland featured QB's Scott Milanovich and Kevin Foley (313 yards + 2 TD's combined), RB Allen Williams (30-118-0) and LB Ratcliff Thomas but were missing star WR Jermaine Lewis to injury (8, Downloaded from the internet, 1 Disc, JP Sports - Brando/Corrigan, NTSC)

11/11/93 - BYU (45) @ (44) San Diego State - Both teams provided a typical WAC shootout as the Cougars denied the Aztecs a shot at the WAC championship with a big game from QB John Walsh. A tight 1st half that ended 17-16 to the Aztecs, exploded in the 2nd half as San Diego State RB Marshall Faulk (32-252-2 inc. 71 yard TD run) traded blows with BYU QB Walsh (19-35-417-5). BYU led 45-38 with 3 minutes left but the Aztecs forced and interception and cashed in with a TD to bring the teams within 1 point. Aztecs coach Al Luginbill decided to go for 2 and the win but the run was stopped short and the Cougars claimed the win. BYU also featured WR Micah Matsuzaki, RB Jamal Willis and LB's Travis Hall and Todd Herget. San Diego State also featured QB Tim Gutierrez, DL La'Roi Glover and DB Darrell Lewis (10, 1 Disc, ESPN - Nessler/Gottfried/Walker, PAL)

13/11/93 -
Florida State (24) @ (31) Notre Dame
- In the "Game of the Century" # 1 FSU travelled to # 2 Notre Dame. Florida State started fast but the rushing duo of Lee Becton and Jerome Bettis dominated the rest of the game and kept Heisman hopeful FSU QB Charlie Ward on the bench. Only once the Irish had extended their lead to 31-17 late in the 4th quarter did Charlie Ward get on track and lead his team back. With the clock running down and the Seminoles down 31-24, Ward had the Seminoles within scoring distance but his last chance pass was batted down and the Irish had won (8, low audio 1st 10 minutes, 2 Discs, NBC - Jones/Christensen/Dockery, PAL)

20/11/93 - Alabama (14) @ (22) Auburn - The usual fiery Iron Bowl had the extra edge of an unbeaten Auburn team (10-0) against the current National Champions and, in a hard-hitting game, it was the Tigers that came out victorious. Alabama led 14-5 at the half but Auburn rallied behind back-up QB Patrick Nix to score 17 uanswered points, including the game-sealing 70 yard TD run from RB James Bostic. The win assured Auburn an unbeaten season as they were on probation and not eligible for a bowl game. The loss was the first of only 2 losses for Alabama QB Jay Barker during his college career (8, Slightly fuzzy picture, Closed-circuit television feed with Auburn Radio overlaid - Fyffe/Trotman, 2 Discs, NTSC)

20/11/93 -
Boston College (41) @ (39) Notre Dame
- Notre Dame needed just 1 more win to claim a spot in the Orange Bowl to play for the National Championship. But the #17 ranked Eagles came out of the blocks fast and posted a 38-17 lead in the 4th quarter. At this point the Irish offense woke up scoring 3 quick TD's to take a 39-38 lead with 1 minute left. BC QB Glen Foley (315 yards + 4 TD passes) cooly guided the team into FG range were Kicker David Gordon kicked a 41 yarder to win the game and end the hopes of the Irish (8, 2 Discs, NBC - Hammond/Collinsworth/Dockery, PAL)

27/11/93 - Florida State (33) @ (21) Florida - The Seminoles continued their march to the National Championship with a big win in Gainesville that ended Florida's 23 game home win streak. Led by QB Charlie Ward (38-53-446-4 including a 79 yard TD pass), Florida State took a 27-7 lead into the 4th quarter then held off a spirited Gator fight-back to take the win. The Seminoles also featured RB Warrick Dunn (6-33-0 + 8-140-1), WR Matt Frier (11-126-0). The Seminoles defense, led by DL Toddrick McIntosh (3 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and LB Derrick Brooks sacked the Florida QB's 6 times and held the Gators rushing attack to -33 yards. The Gators were led by QB's Danny Wuerffel and Terry Dean and RB Errict Rhett (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Swann, NTSC)

24/12/93 - Aloha Bowl - Fresno State (30) v (41) Colorado - In a shootout in Hawaii, #17 ranked Colorado used an opportunistic defense to beat the high-scoring Bulldogs. Fresno State turned the ball over 5 times (4 fumbles and 1 interception) and Colorado turned them into 24 points. Led by QB Kordell Stewart (8-15-124-0 + 8-50-0) and RB Rashaan Salaam (23-135-3), the Buffaloes offense matched the Bulldogs offense, led by QB Trent Dilfer (37-63-523-2), but the Bulldog rushing game only managed 80 yards. Colorado also featured WR's Charles Johnson and Michael Westbrook, LB's Ted Johnson and Matt Russell and DB Chris Hudson (7 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries + 1 sack). The game proved to be the final college game for Trent Dilfer (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jones/Brant, NTSC)

01/01/94 - Rose Bowl -
Wisconsin (21) v (16) UCLA
- Wisconsin won their 1st ever New Years Day bowl with 250 yards rushing on offense, with MVP RB Brent Moss accounting for 158 yards and 2 TD's. In defeat, UCLA WR JJ Stokes (14-176) had a great game (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Swann, PAL)

01/01/94 - Orange Bowl -
Florida State (18) v (16) Nebraska - In a tense battle between 2 coaches looking for their 1st National Championship after years of frustration, it was the Seminoles who prevailed. In a tight defensive battle, both teams star QB's struggled early ; Nebraska QB Tommie Frazier and Florida State QB Charlie Ward. Frazier eventually got the Huskers going and they held a tight 16-15 lead late in the game. But Ward cooly led the 'Noles down the field into FG range where Dan Mowrey kicked the winning kick. But the game still had 14 seonds to play. Nebraska QB Frazier completed a long pass down the field and the ball was downed with 1 second left. But the kick was wide and Bobby Bowden had won his 1st title (9, 2 Discs, NBC - Enberg/Trumpy, PAL)
