08/09/90 - Southern Mississippi (27) @ (24) Alabama - In Alabama coach Gene Stallings 1st game he was upstaged by a great comeback by Southern Miss. QB Brett Favre (9-17-125). 08/09/90 - East Carolina (24) @ (45) Florida State - #3 ranked Florida State opened their season with a shootout win over the Pirates at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles gave QB Brad Johnson (20-28-187-3) his 1st career start and he led Florida State to a 24-17 lead at the half. The Seminoles broke the game open with 14 unanswered points early in the 3rd quarter and the Defense closed out the game for the win. 08/09/90 - Texas Tech (10) @ (17) Ohio State - Underdog Texas Tech gave 18th ranked Ohio State all they could handle in the season opener for both teams but a special teams TD finally saw the Buckeyes take the win. Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball, combining for 9 turnovers, and this gave Tech the chance to stay in the game and they led 10-3 in the 3rd quarter before the Buckeyes scored 2 unanswered TD's to take the win, with the winner coming from WR Jeff Graham on a 50 yard punt return TD. Texas Tech were led on Offense by QB Jamie Gill (12-28-169-1) and RB Anthony Lynn (52 yard TD catch) and on Defense by LB Charles Rowe (14 tackles) and DB Tracy Saul. - Texas made a rare visit to Penn State in the season opener and played the Nittany Lions tough. Texas gave up a long kick-off return to WR OJ. McDuffie but answered with one of their own. 08/09/90 - Miami (Fl) (21) @ (28) BYU - BYU QB Ty Detmer (38-54-406-3) placed his bid for the Heisman with a stunning defeat of #1 Miami. The Miami defense, led by DT Russell Maryland, couldn't deal with the short passing game and the escapability of Detmer. The Miami offense, led by QB Craig Erickson (28-52-299-0), mis-fired all game. 08/09/90 - Clemson (7) @ (20) Virginia - #14 ranked Virginia finally ended 35 years of losing to Clemson with a big win against the #7 ranked Tigers in Charlottesville. Clemson had won 29 straight games against the Cavaliers. After a tight 1st half, the Tigers held a 7-6 lead at the break. But the Cavaliers swung momentum their way with 2 TD's in the 3rd quarter then finished of the Tigers with great Defense in the 4th quarter. Virginia out-gained Clemson 358 yards to 304 yards. Washington State (36) @ (50) BYU
- BYU QB Ty Detmer (32-50-443-5) rallied BYU with a 36 point 4th quarter to shock the Cougars of Washington State. Wazzu were led QB Brad Gossen and late in the 4th quarter, Drew Bledsoe made his 1st collegiate appearance and complete his 1st pass (8, 2 Discs, KBYUTV - Monsen/Fowler/McCann, NTSC)

15/09/90 - Stanford (31) @ (32) UCLA - UCLA turned around a big 2nd half deficit to beat the Cardinal in the Rose Bowl. Stanford led 21-7 in the 3rd quarter thanks to QB Jason Palumbis (21-32-231-2) and WR Ed McCaffrey (9-123-2) but UCLA changed QB's at the half and put Freshman Tommy Maddox (13-20-244-2) into the driving seat. Maddox responded with a big comeback that ended with kicker Brad Daluiso kicking a game-winning FG with 2 seconds left. 15/09/90 - Penn State (14) @ (19) USC - In only the 3rd meeting between the 2 heavyweights of college football, it was USC that rode a goal-line stand to win the game. The star QB's for each team had good games, USC's QB Todd Marinovich (24-32-240-1) and Penn State's Tony Sacca (16-34-243-1), but Sacca hurt his team with 2 interceptions, with the final pick coming in the final minute as the Lions searched for a game-winning TD. - In a battle of the QB's, it was BYU QB Ty Detmer (26-38-510-3) who had the upper hand as he overshadowed the highly touted San Diego QB Dan McGwire (32-61-361-3). - The Dallas rivalry was close early but a combination of strong defense (an INT returned for a TD) and QB Leon Clay hooking up with TE Kelly Blackwell, broke the game open and gave the Frogs the win (7, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, Raycom - Barnett/Rowe, PAL)

29/09/90 - USC (35) @ (26) Ohio State - USC rebounded from a shutout loss against Washington with a big win against #15 ranked Ohio State. USC used a strong rushing attack, led by RB's Ricky Ervins (28-199-2) and Mazio Royster (7-70-0), to take a 28-10 lead in the 2nd half before Ohio State mounted a comeback as the rain started to fall. The Buckeyes, led by QB Greg Frey (19-36-262-2) and RB Robert Smith (54 yards), pulled to within 35-26 with 2:38 left but as the storm worsened and the lightning increased, both coaches agreed to call the game and USC left with the win. - In a sensational comeback, the #12 ranked Cougars overcame a 17 point half-time deficit against the #20 ranked Aggies "Wrecking Crew" defense to win on a 1 yard TD run by RB Chuck Weatherspoon with 20 seconds left. Weatherspoon (27-131-2) had a huge game, well supported by QB David Klingler and a strong 2nd half defensive effort from DB Kenny Perry (10 tackles + 2 INT's). 20/10/90 - Florida State (17) @ (20) Auburn - In front of a capacity crowd in Jordan-Hare Stadium, #5 ranked Auburn knocked off #7 ranked Florida State with a FG with 2 seconds left. The Seminoles had the better of the 1st half and led 17-7 at the break. Auburn fought back in the 2nd half and tied the game with 3:47 left then used a great defensive play to get the ball back for 1 final drive. Auburn moved into FG range where kicker Jim Von Wyl nailed a 38 yard kick with 2 seconds left to win the game. 20/10/90 - Miami (20) @ (29) Notre Dame - Notre Dame avenged their 1989 loss to the 'Canes with a comprehensive win in South Bend. The Irish Offense, led by QB Rick Mirer (8-16-153-1 + 11-34-0), RB Rodney Culver (72 yards) and WR/RB Raghib Ismail (108 yards rushing, 94 yard kick-off return TD + 268 yards of total Offense) kept the scoreboard ticking over by setting up kicker Craig Hentrich for a school record 5 FG's while the defense, led by LB Mike Stonebreaker and DB Todd Lyght, forced 4 turnovers. Miami led 17-16 at the half thanks to QB Craig Erickson and DL Russell Maryland, but the Irish Defense took control in the 2nd half and thwarted any chance of a Miami comeback with 2 key turnovers in the 4th quarter to take the win. 27/10/90 - Miami (45) @ (10) Texas Tech - One week afte losing to Notre Dame, #8 ranked Miami took out their frustrations on Texas Tech. Led by QB Craig Erickson (22-32-307-4) and a smothering Defense (13 sacks), the Hurricanes raced out to a 31-0 lead in the 3rd quarter and totally dominated the Red Raiders on both sides of the ball. Tech was held to 93 yards of total offense but did score a late consolation TD when RB Steven Sheffield ran in from 3 yards out. Miami also featured WR Lamar Thomas (3 TD catches), TE Rob Chudzinski (6-112-1) and DL's Russell Maryland and Rusty Medearis (9 tackles, 5 sacks). Arkansas (28) @ (62) Houston - The unbeaten and #6 ranked Cougars overcame a spirited display by the Razorbacks, using a strong middle part of the game to finish them off. Arkansas QB Quinn Grovey helped the Razorbacks to a 14-7 lead after the 1st quarter but the Cougars ripped off 38 unanswered points to take control of the game, with Houston QB David Klingler (34-51-457-7) having a huge game. 03/11/90 - Texas (41) @ (22) Texas Tech - #14 ranked Texas finally shook off the Red Raiders with a big 4th quarter to take the win in Lubbock. The Longhorns had a big day running the ball, putting up 230 yards and 3 TD's, led by RB's Butch Hadnot (23-95-1) and Chris Samuels (15-76-1). Texas QB Peter Gardere (14-27-188-1) had a steady game. The stars for the Longhorns were the Defense, led by LB Brian Jones (10 tackles) and DL Shane Dronett (9 tackles, 5 sacks), that knocked out the starting Tech QB Jamie Gill (3-12-116-1) and returned 2 interceptions for TD's in the 4th quarter. 03/11/90 - Georgia Tech (41) @ (38) Virginia - #1 ranked and unbeaten Virginia lost their National Championship hopes as Georgia Tech used a strong Offensive and Defensive effort and a 37 yard FG with 7 seconds left to win. Virginia scored on their first 5 possesions but couldn't break the goal-line with 3 minutes remaining and had to settle for a FG that allowed the Yellowjackets the chance of the a game winning kick of their own. 10/11/90 - Notre Dame (34) @ (29) Tennessee - A battle between the 2 heavyweights of college football lived up to the billing as #1 Notre Dame used a big defensive stand to beat #9 Tennessee. A defensive 1st half was followed by an offensive 2nd half with Notre Dame scoring on a 44 yard TD run by WR Raghib Ismail and a 67 yard run by RB Ricky Watters (17-174-2). Tennessee QB Andy Kelly (35-60-399-2) and WR Carl Pickens (13-163-0) had big games but Kelly threw the game-deciding interception in the Irish end-zone with 46 seconds left. 10/11/90 - UCLA (25) @ (22) Washington - In a rainy and windy Husky Stadium, the 21 point underdog Bruins upset the #2 ranked Huskies. Led by QB Tommy Maddox (23-41-239-2) and a great Defensive effort, the Bruins kept the Huskies off-balance, pressuring QB Mark Brunell (10-34-137-1) into 2 inerceptions and fumble. 10/11/90 - BYU (45) @ (14) Wyoming - In a battle for the WAC title, it was the #8 ranked Cougars that took the win with a points explosion in Laramie against the #25 ranked Cowboys. BYU were dominant, running out to 31-14 lead at the half and then used great Defense to keep the Cowboys scoreless in the 2nd half. BYU put up 679 yards of total Offense and held Wyoming to only 189 yards. Stanford (27) @ (25) California
- Stanford finally gained revenge for "The Play" with a last second win of their own. Stanford were trailing 25-18 with just 12 seconds remaining when QB Jason Palumbis hit WR Ed McCaffrey with a TD pass. Stanford went for 2 and the win but the pass was batted down. The Cal students flooded the field and Cal was hit with an unsportsmanlike penalty. As a result, Stanford on-side kicked from midfield and recovered the ball, giving them 1 last shot at getting in FG territory. The pass was incomplete but the Cal defense was called for a late hit on Palumbis, moving the ball within FG range. 17/11/90 - USC (45) @ (42) UCLA - In a wild shootout, USC QB Todd Marinovich (25-215-2) threw the winning TD pass to WR Johhnie Morton in the final minute to beat their cross-town rivals. - The defending champion Hurricanes went to the West Coast for their final game of the regular season and escaped with a win. The Canes came up against a feisty Aztecs team led by QB Dan McGwire and WR Patrick Rowe. Miami only led 20-13 at the half and when San Diego State pulled to within 2 points after a TD with 2:40 left, the upset seemed to be on the cards. But the Canes held onto the ball after the restart and ran out the clock. Miami was led by QB Craig Erickson, WR Randall Hill and a dominating defense featuring DL Rusty Medearis, DL Russell Maryland, DL Shane Curry and LB Maurice Crum. - Houston QB David Klingler (41-70-716-7) set an NCAA record for yards passing in a game (716) as the Cougars out-scored Arizona State in Tokyo, Japan. Klingler completed the scoring with 92 seconds left with a 95 yard TD pass to WR Manny Hazard. 08/12/90 - Div-1AA Semi-Final - Boise State (52) @ (59) Nevada - In one of the greatest Div-1AA playoff games ever, Nevada finally shook off Boise State in 3 overtimes to book a place in the National Championship game. In front of a stadium record crowd of 19,776 people, a fired up Wolfpack team ran out to a 20-7 lead in the 2nd quarter before Boise State rallied with 21 unanswered points to get back in the game. The 4th quarter turned in to a shootout with both teams combining for 39 points. Boise State forced overtime with a last minute TD pass. Both teams failed to score in the 1st overtime then matched each other in the 2nd overtime before Nevada back up their score in the 3rd overtime with a big defensive stand to win the game. Nevada featured QB's Fred Gatlin and Freshman Chris Vargas (who came in in the 3rd quarter), RB Ray Whalen (44-235-3) who had a big game, WR Treamelle Taylor and DB's Brock Marion and Kevin Sims. San Jose State (48) v (24) Central Michigan
- The Spartans, led by 1st year coach Terry Shea, pounded the Chippewas offensively with QB Ralph Martini (404 yards + 2 TD's) and RB Sheldon Canley (164  yards + 4 TD's rushing, 1 TD receiving) doing the damage. 29/12/90 - Holiday Bowl - Texas A&M (65) v (14) BYU - On a record-setting night in San Diego, unranked Texas A&M dominated #13 ranked BYU to win the Holiday Bowl. Texas A&M set bowl game records for most points by a winning team (65) and TD's scored (9) while racking up 680 yards of total Offense. Led by game MVP QB Bucky Richardson (9-11-203-1 + 12-119-2 + 1 TD catch), the Aggies built a 37-7 lead at the half and cruised home, finishing the game with a 21 point 4th quarter. Colorado State (32) v (31) Oregon - Colorado State won their 1st bowl game in 42 years with strong rushing attack, led by FB Todd Yert (12-94-1), and a big defensive effort led by MVP Robert Chirico. The Rams came back from a 25-19 deficit with a 49 yard YD pass from Mike Gimenez to Greg Primus and then a 52 yard TD run from Todd Yert before Oregon QB Bill Musgrave (29-47-392-3) led the Ducks back to within a point of the win. The game-winning 2 point play was caught by Burwell at the goal-line but the ball never crossed the goal-line and the Rams held on to win (2 versions : 8, 2 Discs, Raycom, NTSC / 9, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, Player-to-Recorder copy, Raycom - Stone/James, PAL)

01/01/91 - Rose Bowl - Iowa (34) v (46) Washington - #8 ranked Washington stormed out to a 33-7 half-time lead with tenacious defense and special teams and then held off a spirited 2nd half comeback by the #17 ranked Hawkeyes to win the Rose Bowl. Washington QB Mark Brunell (163 yards, 2 TD passes, 2 TD runs) had a big game while defensive lineman Steve Emtman was a terror up front (2 versions : 8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Arute, NTSC / 8, 1 4th quarter Iowa TD drive quality 7, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Arute, PAL)

01/01/91 - Orange Bowl - Notre Dame (9) v (10) Colorado - #1 Colorado exorcised the demons of the 1990 Orange Bowl with a tight win over #5 ranked Notre Dame, and won a share of the National Championship. Things looked bleak for the Buffaloes at the half as Notre Dame held a 6-3 lead and Colorado were down to their back-up QB as starter Darian Hagan (1-2-4-0 + 7-36-0) had to leave due to injury. The Irish extended their lead to 9-3 before Colorado took the lead late in the 3rd quarter with an Eric Bienemy (26-86-1) 1 yard run. Both teams Defenses then stiffened up and the game came down to one last chance for Notre Dame and, inside the final minute, Irish WR Raghib Ismail (6-57-0) returned a punt 91 yards for a TD only for it to be ruled out for a clipping penalty. Colorado then hung on and took the win. Colorado also featured back-up QB Charles Johnson (5-6-80-0), RB George Hemingway (14-76-0), WR Mike Pritchard (3-45-0), LB's Greg Biekert (11 tackles), Chad Brown (10 tackles) and Alfred Williams (8 tackles). - The annual end-of-season All Star game was a one-sided affair as the East used a strong running game and a punishing defense to win. The East featured QB's Shawn Moore (Virginia) and Bill Musgrave (Oregon) + RB's Nick Bell (Iowa) and Jarrod Bunch (Michigan). The defense featured DL Huey Richardson (Florida) and Bobby Wilson (Michigan State). The West featured QB's Garrett Gabriel (Hawaii) and Paul Justin (Arizona State). The defense featured DB's Darryl Lewis (Arizona), Charles Bell (Baylor) and Stanley Richard (Texas) (7, 1 hour 40 minutes hi-lites, 1 Disc, NBC - Jones/Trumpy/Namath, PAL)

26/01/91 - Shrine Bowl -
West (24) v (21) East - In an entertaining game, both teams matched each other with TD's and it took a FG from Cal kicker Robbie Keen to settle the game in the final 2 minutes. The West featured QB's Dan McGwire (San Diego State) and Bill Musgrave (Oregon)  while the East featured QB Brett Favre (Southern Mississippi) (9, 2 Discs, ESPN - Franklin/Danielson/Kiper/Lomax, NTSC)
