02/09/89 - Southern Mississippi (30) v (26) Florida State - Southern Miss, led by Junior QB Brett Favre (21-39-282-2), upset the #2 ranked Seminoles, scoring the winning TD in the final seconds. The game see-sawed throughout, with Southern Miss holding a 17-10 lead at the half only for Florida State to score 13 unanswered points to lead 23-17 at the start of the 4th quarter. Favre then engineered the comeback, leading the Eagles the length of the field to the winning 4 yard TD pass with 24 seconds left to beat the fancied Seminoles. Southern Miss also featured RB's Ricky Bradley (16-63-1) and Reggie Warnsley (13-64-0) + WR Darryl Tillman (3-91-0). 07/09/89 - Washington State (46) @ (41) BYU - In a wild offensive showdown, BYU QB Ty Detmer (34-53-537-4) and WSU QB Brad Gossen (317 yards passing) put up big numbers but the difference was WSU kicker Jason Hanson. He connected on FG's of 52 and 58 yards and helped the Wazzu Cougars build a 46-28 lead with 4 minutes left. 09/09/89 - Clemson (34) @ (23) Florida State - #10 ranked Clemson upset #16 ranked Florida State in Tallahassee, keeping the Seminoles winless on the season. The Tigers started the game fast, opening a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter, and kept the Seminoles at arms-length the rest of the way. Clemson were led by QB Chris Morocco (8-9-134-0), RB Terry Allen (20-130-3 inc. 73 yard TD run) and LB Wayne Simmons (73 yard Interception return TD). 09/09/89 - Colorado State (20) @ (45) Colorado - #9 Colorado claimed their 3rd straight win over their in-state rivals, unranked Colorado State, in a shootout in Boulder. Both teams combined for 949 yards of total Offense, with the Buffaloes racking up 452 yards on the ground. The Buffaloes out-scored the Rams 24-6 in the middle 2 quarters to take control of the game, then coasted home in the 4th quarter. Colorado featured QB's Darian Hagan (4-7-53-0 + 14-103-0 including a 71 yard run) in his 2nd career start and Charles S.Johnson (1 TD run), RB Eric Bieniemy (23-156-3) and LB's Alfred Williams and Michael Jones. 16/09/89 - Utah (30) @ (42) Nebraska - #4 ranked Nebraska finally put away a spirited Utah team with a strong rushing attack that amassed 432 yards on the ground. The Utes led 13-7 after the 1st quarter, led by QB Scott Mitchell (26-44-297-4) but the Cornhuskers rallied and out-scored Utah 35-17 the rest of the way, led by RB's Ken Clark (22-130-1) and Bryan Carpenter (5-102-1) + QB Jerry Gdowski (3-6-27- + 15-98-3). The Defense also chipped in with a 6 yard interception return for a TD by LB Mike Croel (8, Colour Game film with no commentary - video shot from end-zone, 1 Disc, NTSC)

23/09/89 - Ohio State (3) @ (42) USC - The first meeting between the schools in 25 years was not a happy one for the Buckeyes, as USC handed them a beating in the LA Coliseum. Led by QB Todd Marinovich (14-22-246-4 inc. an 87 yard TD pass), in only his 3rd college start, and a dominating defense that forced 4 sacks, the Trojans dominated Ohio State and moved to 2-1 on the season. USC also featured RB Ricky Ervins, WR's John Jackson and Gary Wellman, DL Dan Owens and Tim Ryan, LB Junior Seau and DB Mark Carrier. The Buckeyes were led by QB's Greg Frey and Kirk Herbstreit, RB Carlos Snow and WR Bobby Olive (8, 3 Discs, ABC - Bender/Vermeil, NTSC)

23/09/89 - Cal State-Fullerton (41) @ (41) San Diego State - Cal State-Fullerton were rewarded for a strong game with a tie, kicking the tieing FG on the last play of the game. Both teams RB's had big games with the Aztecs Darrin Wagner (22-161-2) and the Titans Mike Pringle (25-158-2 + 6-34-1 + 110 kick-off return yards) leading their teams. The Titans started fast and jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the 1st half but the Aztecs fought back to only trail 23-21 at the break. The 2nd half ebbed and flowed and it took a last minute drive by the Titans to get into FG range where kicker Phil Nevin kicked his 4th of the game from 22 yards on the last play to earn a tie. The Titans also featured QB Dan Speltz. 30/09/89 - Clemson (17) @ (21) Duke - On a rainy day in Durham, Duke upset #7 ranked Clemson with a big 2nd half, their 1st win at home against the Tigers since 1975. Clemson led 14-0 at the half, led by RB Terry Allen (142 yards + 2 TD's) but Duke shut-down the Tigers rushing attack in the 2nd half, allowing only 54 yards, to take the win. Duke QB Billy Ray (261 yards, 2 TD passes) shook off 5 interceptions to throw the game winning pass with 3 minutes left and was well supported by RB's Roger Boone and Randy Cuthbert + WR Clarkston Hines. Clemson also featured QB Chris Morocco, LB Levon Kirkland and DB Jerome Henderson. Duke were coached by Steve Spurrier (9, 2 Discs, JP Sports - Nessler/Corrigan/Hogewood, NTSC)

30/09/89 - Pittsburgh (31) @ (31) West Virginia - #10 ranked Pittsburgh stunned #9 ranked West Virginia, in Morgantown, by rallying from a 31-9 deficit in the 3rd quarter to steal the draw with a 42 yard FG on the last play. The Mountaineers built their big lead through Pitt turnovers and 4 TD passes from QB Major Harris. Pittsburgh's 4th quarter comeback was engineered by Freshman QB Alex Van Pelt and RB Curvin Richards. West Virginia also featured WR's Reggie Rembert and James Jett + LB's Renaldo Turnbull and Chris Haering. Pitts defense featured DL Tony Siragusa, Marc Spindler and Keith Hamlton, LB Ricardo McDonald + DB's Louis Riddick and Dan Crossman (9, 2 Discs, ESPN - Franklin/Kiley, NTSC)

30/09/89 - USC (18) @ (17) Washington State - In a sensational finish in Pullman, USC won the game with a last minute TD pass in their PAC-10 opener. Washington State kept USC in check the whole game, but with time running out and USC 17-10 down, the Trojans marched 91 yards in just under 4 minutes and won the game on a TD and 2 point pass play with 4 seconds left. The heroes for USC were QB Todd Marinovich (27-41-268-1), WR Gary Wellman and RB Ricky Ervins (23-138-0 + 1 TD pass and 1 TD catch). USC also featured WR John Jackson (11-102-1), LB Junior Seau and DB Mark Carrier. 07/10/89 - Texas A&M (24) @ (27) Texas Tech - Texas Tech withstood a 4th quarter defensive onslaught to win on a 3rd-and-24 TD pass play with 50 seconds left. QB Jamie Gill, RB James Gray and WR Travis Price were the heroes. Texas A&M were led by RB Darren Lewis (9, Between 11:00 and 6:24 of 1st quarter picture very snowy due to atmospheric disturbance - Rest of the game OK, 4 Discs, Raycom - Barnett/Rowe, NTSC)

07/10/89 - Baylor (10) @ (66) Houston - Baylor, with their #1 pass defense led by Mike Welch and Robert Blackmon, figured to give unbeaten Houston their biggest test yet. But Heisman hopeful QB Andre Ware (514 yards, 6 TD passes) ripped the Bears secondary with a 33 point 2nd quarter, en-route to a comfortable win (8, Low audio, 2 Discs, HSE - Worrell/Phillips, NTSC)

14/10/89 - Navy (14) @ (31) Pittsburgh Panthers - Pittsburgh advanced to 5-0-1 with a comeback win over a tough Navy team. After conceding an early 7-0 lead the Panthers scored 24 unanswered points to take the win. Pitt QB Alex Van Pelt (2 TD passes) and RB Curvin Richards (52 yard TD run) did the damage. Navy were led by QB Alton Grizzard (10-15-157-2) and LB Scott Carson (8, 2 Discs, JP Sports - Martin/Cassiola, NTSC)

14/10/89 - Texas (28) v (24) Oklahoma - Texas finally beat their big rivals from Oklahoma for the first time in 6 years as Freshman QB Peter Gardere led them to a 4th quarter comeback. Texas actually led at the half 21-7 but #15 ranked Oklahoma fought back to take the lead 24-21 with 3:42 left in the game. Gardere (15-23-144-2) then worked his magic, guiding the team downfield to the winning 25 yard TD pass to WR Johnny Walker (5-62-1) with only 1:33 left. The Sooners last possession ended in failure and Texas celebrated the big win. The Sooners out-gained the Longhorns on offense by 346 yards to 274, including 285 yards rushing. Texas also featured on Offense WR Tony Jones (5-36-1) + RB Adrian Walker (16-78-0) and on Defense by LB's Anthony Curl (12 tackles) and Brian Jones (12 tackles) + DB Lance Gunn (11 tackles). 21/10/89 - New Mexico (21) @ (27) Florida - #20 ranked Florida got all it could handle from the un-ranked Lobos, but a record-setting day from RB Emmitt Smith (31-316-3) ensured they would extend their winning streak to 6 games. Florida controlled the game for 3 quarters, with Smith rushing for a school-record 316 yards and 3 touchdowns including a 72 yard TD run, as they ran out to a 24-7 lead in the 4th quarter. But the Lobos made the game interesting late, pulling to within 3 points, before the Gators #1 ranked Defense finally closed the deal and Florida held on for the win. Florida also featured QB's Lex Smith (4-7-59-0), who was making his 1st career start, and Donald Douglas (1-4-7-0 + 7-42-0), WR Ernie Mills (2-35-0), DL's Huey Richardson and Brad Culpepper and DB Richard Fain. 21/10/89 - Tennessee (30) @ (47) Alabama - The Tide used a big game from QB Gary Hollingsworth to beat their big rivals and keep their unbeaten record intact. Hollingsworth (32-46-379-3) and RB Siran Stacy (33-125-4 + 75 yard TD catch) kept the Tide going as they rolled up 562 yards of Offense, while the Defense, led by LB Keith McCants (16 tackles) and DL Willie Wyatt, kept the pressure on the Vols Offense. Tennessee were led by QB Andy Kelly (15-28-226-2), who came in on the 3rd series of the game, RB Chuck Webb (23-110) and WR Carl Pickens (9, 1 Disc, CBS - Musberger/Brant, NTSC)

21/10/89 - SMU (21) @ (95) Houston - The offensive juggernaut that was the "Run and Shoot" reached its peak with a record-breaking win over an SMU team playing it's 1st season of football since being given the death penalty in 1986. Houston QB Andre Ware (25-41-517-6) and RB Chuck Weatherspoon (15-207-3) did the dammage as Houston became the only team to amass over 1000 yards of total offense (1021) (9, Broadcast pictures without commentators, 2 Discs, NTSC)

21/10/89 - Texas (24) @ (20) Arkansas - In a big upset in Fayetteville, Texas upset #7 ranked Arkansas and put themselves in pole position in the Southwest Conference. Texas trailed 14-13 at the half, despite forcing 3 Arkansas turnovers, but came out firing in the 2nd half. Texas dominated the 3rd quarter and early 4th quarter, scoring 11 unanswered points to take a lead they defended to the end. Texas featured QB Peter Gardere (16-20-247-1), RB's Chris Samuels (12-56-0) and Adrian Walker (17-52-0), WR Johnny Walker (6-81-0) and LB Brian Jones (10 tackles, 1 sack). 04/11/89 - Houston (55) @ (10) TCU - Houston continued their surge through the Southwest Conference with a big win over the Horned Frogs. Houston QB Andre Ware (42-63-477-6) led a record-setting day for the Cougars, as he set the Conference Single Season passing yardage record in only 3 quarters of action. Houston WR Manny Hazard (19-194-3) set the Conference record for catches in a game. Houston also featured RB Chuck Weatherspoon and LB Lamar Lathon. 04/11/89 - Oregon (41) @ (45) BYU - In a battle between 2 of the top QB's of 1989, it was Ty Detmer and the BYU Cougars who won out. Detmer (29-46-470-3) had a spectacular game, leading the Cougars to a last minute TD. Oregon QB Bill Musgrave (26-43-489-2) threw for a career high in yardage (8, 2 Discs, BYUTV - Monsen/Fowler/McCann, NTSC)

04/11/89 - Arkansas (38) @ (17) Rice - #11 ranked Arkansas huffed and puffed against the Owls, finally putting them away with 21 unanswered points over the final 16 minutes of the game. Both teams were evenly matched in the 1st half and Arkansas held a 17-10 lead at the half. Both teams were tied at 17-17 late in the 3rd quarter before Arkansas pulled away with 3 TD's, including a 47 yard Interception return TD, to take the win. Arkansas featured QB's Quinn Grovey and Jimmy Williams, who came in in the 4th quarter, and RB's James Rouse (18-132-1) and Barry Foster. Rice featured QB's Don Hollas (16-20-177-0) and Greg Willig (2 TD passes), who replaced an injured Hollas in the 2nd Quarter, and LB OJ Brigance (8, 1 Disc, Downloaded from the Internet, Raycom - Barnett/Rowe, NTSC)

11/11/89 - North Carolina State (26) @ (35) Duke - In a shootout in Durham, Duke held off the Wolfpack to improve their record to 7-3 and put themselves within 1 game of their 1st ACC title since 1962. Duke had a strong 1st half, led by QB Dave Brown (27-42-374-4), RB Randy Cuthbert (37-158-0) and WR Clarkston Hines (6-131-2), and led 28-10 at the break. But the Wolfpack, led by a huge game from QB Shane Montgomery (37-73-535-2), fought back to within 28-20 before Montgomery threw an interception that was returned 64 yards for the game-deciding TD. The 73 pass attempts and 535 passing yards by Montgomery set ACC records. North Carolina State also featured RB Anthony Barbour (5-71-0) and WR's Al Byrd (5-126-0) and Reggie Lawrence (5-129-1). 11/11/89 - TCU (7) @ (37) Texas Tech - Coverage starts at the kick-off and is the 1st Quarter only, and ends with Tech leading 10-0. Texas Tech RB James Gray went over 1,000 yards for the season with a 69 yard run in the 1st quarter. With the run he moved up to 8th on the SWC all-time rushing list. The 1st quarter scores came from a Lin Elliott 29 yard FG and a 5 yard TD pass from Jamie Gill to Anthony Manyweather. 18/11/89 - Duke (41) @ (0) North Carolina - Duke clinched a share of the ACC Championship, their 1st since 1962, with a huge win over their big rivals. Led by QB Dave Brown (33-54-479-3) and RB Randy Cuthbert (21-120-1), Duke kept the Tarheels Defense off-balance and racked up a 27-0 lead at the half then cruised home in the 2nd half to the win. North Carolina, led by Freshman QB Chuckie Burnette (7-26-115-0) and RB Eric Blount, were un-done by 6 interceptions, 1 fumble + 2 stops on 4th down attempts. Duke were led by coach Steve Spurrier and also featured WR Clarkston Hines (9-162-3), TE Dave Colonna (who also kicked a PAT), and DB Quinton McCracken. 18/11/89 - Utah (31) @ (70) BYU - BYU avenged their 1988 loss to the Utes with a dominating performance in Provo. BYU raced out to a 49-0 lead at the half, with Cougars QB Ty Detmer (18-22-358-4) having a big game. Detmer only lasted 1 series in the 2nd half before retiring to the bench and giving way to back-up Sean Covey. BYU's Offense was perfectly balanced, passing for 421 yards and running for 329 yards. 25/11/89 - Baylor (50) @ (7) Texas - Baylor ended 38 years of misery by beating Texas in Austin for the first time since 1951. Baylor started slowly on Offense but the Defense picked up the slack, scoring on 2 interception returns for a TD by DB Robert Blackmon, and built a 17-0 lead at the half. After the break the Bears exploded for 26 points in the 3rd quarter to ice the game. Baylor featured All American LB James Francis on the SWC #1 ranked defense. Texas were led by QB's Peter Gardere and Donovan Forbes and LB Brian Jones. 25/11/89 - Notre Dame (10) @ (27) Miami - #7 ranked Miami upset #1 Notre Dame and ended the Irish 23 game win streak with a big win at the Orange Bowl. Led by on Offense by QB Craig Erickson and WR Randall Hill the 'Canes wore down the Irish, especially in the 3rd quarter where they ran 11 minutes off the clock on 1 TD drive which included a game-turning conversion on 3rd-and-44. The Irish were only down 17-10 at the half but were kept out of the end-zone in the 2nd half by a strong 'Canes Defense led by DL's Cortez Kennedy and Russell Maryland and LB's Maurice Crum and Bernard Clark (13 tackles + 1 Interception). 09/12/89 - Army (17) v (19) Navy - Navy finally ended Army's 3 game series win streak with a big win at Giants Stadium. Led by QB Alton Grizzard (54 yard TD pass) and FB Mike Burns (57 yards), the Middies used a last minute 63 yard drive to set up the game-winning 32 yard FG by Fred Schenk. Army, led by RB Mike Mayweather, went toe-to-toe with Navy and led 14-9 at the half before Navy rallied for the win (7, Slight jumpy picture, 2 Discs, CBS - Nantz/Haden, NTSC)

28/12/89 - All American Bowl - Texas Tech (49) v (21) Duke - Texas Tech set bowl rushing records as RB James Gray rushed for 280 yds + 4 TD's. Texas Tech jumped out to a 28-0 lead and forced 4 Duke turnovers before cruising home and denying Duke coach Steve Spurrier a win in his last game as Duke coach before leaving for the University of Florida (9, 2 Discs, ESPN - Larrivee/Bennett/Fowler, NTSC)

29/12/89 - Holiday Bowl - Penn State (50) v (39) BYU - In a shootout in San Diego, Penn State out-lasted BYU to take the victory. After a low-scoring 1st half that BYU led 13-12, both teams exploded in the 2nd half. Penn State opened up a 41-26 lead in the 4th quarter before BYU scored 2 TD's to pull within 2 points. But the 2 point play after the 2nd TD was returned for 102 yards for a score and Penn State finished the game off by forcing, recovering and returning a fumble 53 yards in the final minute. Penn State were led by QB Tony Sacca (10-20-206-2), RB Blair Thomas (35-186-1), WR David Daniels (2-64-1), LB's Brian Chizmar (10 tackles, 1 sack) and Andre Collins (6 tackles + 1 interception) and DB Gary Brown (4 tackles, 53 yard fumble return for a TD). 13/01/90 - Japan Bowl - East All Stars (24) v (10) West All Stars - The East chalked up a 2nd straight Japan Bowl win, capitalising on West turnovers to win the game. The East defense, led by DB Leroy Butler (Florida State), harrassed the West all game while the East Offense, led by QB Peter Tom Willis (Florida State) kept the scoreboard ticking over. The East Offense also featured QB Dave Schnell (Duke), RB's Blake Ezor (Michigan State), Blair Thomas (Penn State) and Anthony Thompson (Indiana) and WR Clarkston Hines (Duke). The East Defense also featured DL Odell Haggins, LB's Ned Bolcar (Notre Dame) and Andre Collins (Penn State) and DB Dan Crossman (Pittsburgh). The West Offense featured QB's Troy Taylor (Cal) and Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State), RB's Mike Pringle (Cal State-Fullerton) and James Gray (Texas Tech). 13/01/90 - Hula Bowl - East All Stars (13) v (21) West All Stars - The West Seniors put in an all-around good game to beat the East Seniors. West QB Cary Conklin (Washington) had an MVP game, passing for 232 yards and 3 TD's while LB James Francis (Baylor) blocked 3 kicks (2 FG's and 1 punt) and took Defensive MVP honours. The West also featured QB Dee Dowis (Air Force), RB Steve Broussard (Washington State) and WR's Terrance Mathis (New Mexico) and Charles Arbuckle (UCLA). The West Defense featured LB Aaron Wallace (Texas A&M) and DB Robert Blackmon (Baylor). The East featured QB's Tony Rice (Notre Dame) and Frank Baur (Lafayette), RB Judd Garrett (Princeton) and WR's Cary Cooper (Clemson) and Eric Green (Liberty).
