08/09/88 - Texas (6) @ (47) BYU - In the 1st meeting between the schools in Provo, BYU inflicted on the Longhorns their biggest ever defeat. The Cougars rolled up 516 yards of total offense, led by QB's Sean Covey (14-38-323-2 including an 89 yard TD pass) and Freshman Ty Detmer (2-3-64-1), while the Defense, led by LB Bob Davis (11 tackles), forced 5 turnovers and held the Longhorns without a TD. BYU also featured RB Fred Whittingham (7-63-1), WR's Chuck Cutler (5-116-2) and Bryce Doman (3-124-1) + DB Rodney Rice (5 tackles + 70 yard interception return TD). Texas were led by QB's Shannon Kelley (11-32-137-0) and Mark Murdock (2-10-30-0), RB Darron Norris (14-51-0), WR Tony Jones (6-107-0) and LB Britt Hager (18 tackles, 1.5 sacks) but were missing RB Eric Metcalf to injury (8, Re-Broadcast, 1 Disc, K-BYUTV - Monsen/Fowler, NTSC)

10/09/88 - Duke (31) v (26) Tennessee - Duke continued their hot start to the season with a big win in Knoxville. The Blue Devils dominated the Vols for 3 quarters, taking a 31-7 lead with 2.5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, before Tennessee staged a comeback. The Vols ran out of time, though, and Duke held on for the win. Duke featured QB Anthony Dilweg (21-32-312-3), RB Roger Boone (93 yards) and WR Clarkston Hines (6-112-3). Tennessee featured QB Jeff Francis (16-26-257-2) and RB Reggie Cobb (28-182-1). 10/09/88 - Nebraska (28) @ (41) UCLA - #2 ranked Nebraska travelled to #5 UCLA and ran into an Offensive onslaught as UCLA scored on their first 3 possessions and a 75 yard punt return TD to take a 28-0 1st quarter lead. Nebraska out-scored UCLA 28-13 during quarters 2-4 but the damage was already done. The stars for UCLA were QB Troy Aikman (13-22-205-3), RB Eric Ball (35-148-0) and TE Charles Arbuckle (5-110-2). 17/09/88 - Miami (31) @ (30) Michigan - In front of 105,834 people at Michigan Stadium, #1 ranked Miami sensationally beat Michigan to en-sure the Wolverines started the season 0-2. Michigan dominated the game for 3.5 quarters, forcing 4 turnovers, and held a 30-14 lead with 5 minutes to play in the game. But Miami suddenly found some Offense and scored 17 unanswered points including the game-winning 29 yard FG with 43 seconds to play. The FG came 5 plays after Miami recovered an on-side kick. With the win Miami extended their win streak to 14 games and their road win streak to 20 games. Miami featured QB Steve Walsh (24-45-335-3), RB Cleveland Gary and WR Randall Hill, TE Rob Chudzinski, DL Russell Maryland, LB Randy Shannon and DB Bubba McDowell. 17/09/88 - Florida State (24) @ (21) Clemson - Florida State rallied to beat #3 ranked Clemson in the rain as Nole's coach Bobby Bowden called for the Puntrooksie in the final minute to set up the winning FG. Seminole DB Deion Sanders also scored on a 76 yard punt return (8, 1 hour 45 mins hi-lites from ESPN Classic, 2 Discs, ABC - Musberger/Haden/O'Brien, NTSC)

24/09/88 - Virginia (34) @ (38) Duke - Duke moved to 4-0 on the season with a tight win over ACC-title chasing Virginia. The Blue Devils, led by QB Anthony Dilweg (391 yards + 3 TD's), RB Roger Boone (26-86-2) and WR Clarkston Hines (1 TD catch) ran out to a 31-7 lead at the half. Virginia rallied in the 2nd half behind the play of QB Shawn Moore (13-36-280-2 + 2 TD runs), WR Tim Finkleston (3 TD catches) and a fired-up Defense, led by DL Ray Savage, LB David Griggs and DB Jesse Campbell, but the comeback fell short as Duke held on to win (9, 2 Discs, Jefferson Pilot - Slaten/Bennett/Holliday, NTSC)

24/09/88 - Texas A&M (15) @ (52) Oklahoma State - The Cowboys of Oklahoma State confirmed their Big-8 credentials with a big win over the Aggies. Led by QB Mike Gundy (9-13-143-1 + 1 TD run), RB Barry Sanders (20-157-2 inc. 58 yard run + 61 yard punt return TD), WR Hart Lee Dykes (5-122-1) and a Defense that forced 5 turnovers, the Pokes posted a 38-7 lead at the half and coasted home. The Aggies, led by QB Chris Osgood (20-32-197-2) and RB Darren Lewis (25-168-0) actually accumulated more first downs, more rushing yards, and more passing yards than Oklahoma State but were let down by the turnovers, 2 dropped TD catches and penalties at inopportune moments. The Cowboys also featured DB Rod Smith (73 yard interception return TD). Missing action in the 4th quarter between 7:24 and 0:36. 01/10/88 - Houston (27) @ (24) Baylor - The Cougars ended their 3 game road trip with a big win over Baylor. Houston QB David Dacus (18-33-201-2) had a good game, leading the Cougars back from a 14-10 deficit at the half to lead 27-16 with 2.5 minutes left. Baylor QB Brad Goebel (21-40-262-3) brought the Bears to within 3 points with 43 seconds left but the Coogs recovered the onside kick and sealed the win. Goebel wasn't helped by a running game that was held to just 84 total yards. Houston also featured RB's Kimble Anders and Chuck Weatherspoon who combined for 172 yards rushing. Baylor also featured LB James Francis and DB's Charles Bell and Robert Blackmon (8, 2 Discs, Raycom - Franklin/Rowe, NTSC)

08/10/88 - Texas Tech (10) @ (31) Arkansas - #20 ranked Arkansas showed their Cotton Bowl credentials with a dominating win over the Red Raiders. A tight 1st half ended 10-3 to the Razorbacks, but Arkansas dominated the 2nd half with a punishing rushing attack that amassed 250 yards. The main weapons were QB Quinn Grovey (1 TD run) and RB's Barry Foster (1 TD run) and JuJu Harshaw (1 TD run). Arkansas also featured WR Derek Russell and DB Steve Atwater. Texas Tech were led by QB Billy Joe Tolliver, RB's James Gray (1 TD run) and Anthony McDowell, WR Tyrone Thurman, LB Mike Derryberry and DB Donald Harris (8, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, Raycom - Stone/Rowe, PAL)

15/10/88 - Miami (30) @ (31) Notre Dame - #1 Miami, undefeated and riding a 36 game win streak, travelled to Notre Dame to play the undefeated and #4 ranked Irish. Miami QB Steve Walsh (31-50-424-4) played a great game but the Irish defense forced turnovers at key times to keep the game close. With 42 seconds left, Walsh threw his 4th TD pass to close the game to 31-30. Miami coach Jimmy Johnson decided to go for 2 points and the win but the pass was knocked down and the Irish secured an upset win (9, 2 Discs, CBS - Musberger/Haden/Dockery, PAL)

15/10/88 - Texas Tech (38) @ (36) Rice - In a shootout, Texas Tech extended the Owls 12 game losing streak with a big game from the smallest man on the pitch. Tech WR Tyrone Thurman (2 TD catches + 75 yard punt return TD) had a huge game and was supported by QB Billy Joe Tolliver (17-26-251-3) and RB James Gray (22-181-1). Rice were led by QB Quentis Roper (19-34-277-1) and RB Eric Henley (11-106-1) but couldn't comeback from a 31-14 deficit in the 4th quarter (8, The last 2 Rice TD's are not shown in the broadcast, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, Raycom - Stone/Rowe, PAL)

15/10/88 - Oklahoma State (42) @ (63) Nebraska - In a wild shootout, Nebraska rode a stunning 49-21 half-time lead to victory but barely held off a strong Cowboy offense. The Huskers were led by QB Steve Taylor (3 TD passes, 2 TD runs) and RB Ken Clark (27-256-3). The Cowboys were led by QB Mike Gundy, WR Hart Lee Dykes and RB Barry Sanders (35-189-4) (8, 2 Discs, Cowboy TV Network - Barry/Dirato, NTSC)

22/10/88 - Penn State (3) @ (8) Alabama - In a great defensive battle, Alabama found just enough offense to win. The star of the show was Tide LB Derrick Thomas who had 8 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 pass defensed and scored on a safety. Penn State featured QB Tony Sacca, RB Leroy Thompson, OL Steve Wisniewski and LB Andre Collins (9, 1 Disc, CBS - Musberger/Haden/Dockery, NTSC)

22/10/88 - Oklahoma (17) @ (14) Colorado - In the 1st ever night game at Folsom Field, the Buffaloes gave the #8 ranked Sooners all they could handle. The Offense, led by QB Sal Aunese (8-18-184) and RB Eric Bienemy, kept the score at 14-14 into the 3rd quarter before Sooners kicker R.D. Lashar booted a 22 yard FG to put the Sooners ahead for good. Oklahoma were led by QB Charles Thompson and RB's Mike Gaddis and Anthony Stafford. Colorado also featured Alfred Williams, Kanavis McGhee, Deon Figures and Tim James on defense (8, slight ghosting, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, ESPN - Carpenter/Kiley, PAL)

29/10/88 - Texas (32) @ (33) Texas Tech - Texas Tech staged a big comeback from a 32-15 deficit in the 3rd quarter to beat the Longhorns. Tech scored 18 points in final 12:37 of the game including the winning 46 yard TD pass from QB Billy Joe Tolliver (295 yards passing) to WR Eddy Anderson (4-118-1) with with 2:26 left. The win spoiled the debut of Texas Freshman QB Mark Murdock (20-35-326-2). Tech also featured RB James Gray and WR Travis Price. Texas also featured RB Eric Metcalf (29-156-0). 05/11/88 - Houston (66) @ (15) Texas - Texas suffered their worst ever home loss with a drubbing at the hands of Houston QB Andre Ware and the "Run-and-Shoot" offense. Ware (20-44-304-5), WR Jason Phillips (11-171-4) and RB Chuck Weatherspoon (11-218-1) were unstoppable and the defense also chipped in with 12 turnovers including 4 sacks and 2 interceptions of Texas QB Mark Murdock (15-39-139-0). The lone bright spot for Texas was RB Eric Metcalf (104 yards rushing) but he left the game in the 3rd quarter with a sprained ankle (2 Versions : 8, Full Game, 2 Discs, Raycom, NTSC / 8, 50 mins hi-lites, 1 Disc, Raycom - Franklin/Rowe, PAL)

26/11/88 - Rice (14) @ (45) Houston - On a record-setting final game of the regular season for both teams, the Cougars ran away from Rice in the 2nd half to take the win. Houston QB Andre Ware (39-52-471-5) set SWC records for single-game completions, single-game passing yardage and single-season touchdown passes (25). A tight 1st half ended 14-14 but Houston scored 31 unanswered points in the 2nd half to win the Bayou Bucket and keep Rice winless on the season. Houston also featured WR's Jason Phillips (11-207-2) and James Dixon (15-108-1) and RB Chuck Weatherspoon (29 yards). The trio made Houston the only team ever to have two 1000 yard receivers and one 1000 yard rusher in the same season. Rice were led by QB Quentis Roper and also featured LB OJ. 29/11/88 - Washington State (34) @ (30) UCLA - Washington State rallied from a 27-6 deficit in the 3rd quarter behind the arm of QB Timm Rosenbach who threw 2 TD passes, one of which went 81 yards. Down by 4 in the final minute, UCLA QB Troy Aikman drove the Bruins to the Wazzu 6 yard line but his 4th down pass was batted down in the end-zone and the Coogs had upset the 7-0 Bruins (8, 1 hour 45 mins hi-lites from ESPN Classic, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Adamle, NTSC)

19/11/88 - USC (31) @ (22) UCLA - USC QB Rodney Peete, sidelined for most of game-week with measles, led the Trojans to an upset of the 10-1 Bruins, led by QB Troy Aikman (317 yards) (8, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Griese/Adamle, PAL)

10/12/88 - California Bowl - Western Michigan (30) v (35) Fresno State - Fresno State used a big 2nd half to beat the Broncos, who were playing in their 1st Bowl game. The Broncos led 17-14 at the half before the Bulldogs scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter to take control of the game and the win. The Bulldogs were led by QB Mark Barsotti (15-29-240-2 inc. TD passes of 55 and 38 yards), RB Darrell Rosette (23-149-2 inc. 65 yard TD run) and LB's Tracy Rogers and Ron Cox. The Broncos were led by star QB Tony Kimbrough (24-57-366-2) and also featured DL Joel Smeenge and LB Eric Hoffman. 24/12/88 - Sun Bowl - Alabama (29) v (28) Army - In a contrast of styles, the air attack of the Tide faced the ground attack of the Army. Alabama QB David Smith passed for a Sun Bowl record 412 yds while Army rushed for 232 yards in the 1st half alone. Alabama had to score 2 TD's in the 4th quarter to secure the win. Alabama LB Derrick Thomas, in his final game, was awesome as he made 6 tackles, broke-up 1 pass and blocked 2 FG's (8, 2 Discs, CBS - Lundquist/Haden/Dockery, PAL)

29/12/88 - Freedom Bowl - BYU (20) v (17) Colorado - In the 5th annual Freedom Bowl, BYU used a strong 2nd half to upset the Buffaloes. Colorado had the better of the 1st half and led 14-7 at the half, but in the 3rd quarter BYU inserted Freshman QB Ty Detmer (11-17-129-1) and he led the Cougars to 13 points including the game-winning FG with 2:33 left to play. BYU also featured QB Sean Covey (4-10-39-1), RB's Matt Bellini (8-81-0 + 4-41-0), Mike Salido (9-62-0) and Fred Whittingham (16-58-0) + WR Darren Handley (3-42-0). Colorado featured QB Sal Aunese (4-13-46-0 + 14-53-0), RB Eric Bieniemy (33-152-2) and WR Erich Kissick (2-23-0). 30/12/88 - Holiday Bowl - Oklahoma State (62) v (14) Wyoming - The Big-8 Cowboys dominated the WAC champion Cowboys, racing out to a 45-7 lead at the half then coasted home. Oklahoma State were led by QB Mike Gundy (20-24-315-2), WR Hart Lee Dykes (10-163-1) and Heisman Trophy winning RB Barry Sanders (29-222-5 + 17 yard pass), who didn't play in the 4th quarter. The 5 TD runs (1, 2, 10, 33, 67) were a Holiday Bowl record (8, Slightly low audio / Missing last second of 1st half and last 34 seconds of the 2nd half, 2 Discs, ESPN - Carpenter/Kiley/Hawkes, NTSC)

02/01/89 - Cotton Bowl - UCLA (17) v (3) Arkansas - In his final college game, UCLA QB Troy Aikman went out a winner, leading the Bruins to their 10th win of the season and an NCAA-record 7th straight Bowl win. UCLA dominated the game on both sides of the ball. On Offense they put up 371 yards of total Offense, 22 first downs and controlled the ball for 42 minutes. On Defense they held the Razorbacks to 4 first downs and only 42 yards of total Offense, with Arkansas's only points coming after a UCLA turnover. UCLA went in at the half with a 14-0 lead and that proved to be enough as a FG for each team in the 2nd half ended the scoring. UCLA featured Aikman (19-27-172-1), RB Shawn Wills (18-120-0), WR Mel Farr (4-48-0), LB's Doug Kline (8 tackles) and Carnell Lake. 15/01/89 - Japan Bowl - East All Stars (30) v (7) West All Stars - The East used a big 1st half and a great defensive performance to beat the West. The East led 24-7 at the half with 2 TD runs from Robert Drummond (Syracuse) and a TD pass from QB Anthony Dilweg (Duke) and the defense, led by LB Derrick Thomas (Alabama), made the result hold up during the 2nd half. The West featured QB's Troy Aikman (UCLA) and Chuck Hartlieb (Iowa), RB's Eric Ball (UCLA) and Anthony Stafford (Oklahoma) and Defenders LB Broderick Thomas (Alabama) and DB Marcus Turner (UCLA). The East also featured QB's Bobby McAllister (Michigan State) and Jeff francis (Tennessee), RB Mark Green (Notre Dame) and WR's Tom Waddle (Boston College) and Boo Mitchell (Vanderbilt) (8, 2 Discs, ESPN - Carpenter/White, NTSC)
