27/08/86 - Kick-Off Classic - Alabama (16) v (10) Ohio State - In a battle of the 2 heavyweights of College Football, it was the Tide that prevailed, scoring 10 points in the 4th Quarter. A close game was dominated by the Buckeyes early and they held a 10-6 lead into the final quarter before Tide QB Mike Shula led Alabama to the win. 13/09/86 - Michigan (24) @ (23) Notre Dame - #3 ranked Michigan just about survived a visit to Notre Dame Stadium, but needed a missed FG in the last minute to do so. Un-ranked Notre Dame came out fired-up under new coach Lou Holtz, coaching his first game for the Irish. Notre Dame led 14-7 in the 2nd quarter but the Wolverines scored the next 17 points to take control of the game. With Michigan leading 24-23 with 1:33 to play, the Wolverines fumbled, giving the Irish one last drive. They got as close as the Michigan 28 yard line but a 45 yard FG attempt missed with 13 seconds to play and the Wolverines held on for the win. Michigan featured QB Jim Harbaugh (15-23-239-1), RB Jamie Morris (23-77-2), WR John Kolesar (4-93-0), DL Mark Messner and LB Andy Moeller (7 tackles). 13/09/86 - Mississippi State (27) @ (23) Tennessee - On a sunny day in Knoxville, the Bulldogs upset #8 ranked Tennessee thanks to a huge game from QB Don Smith. Mississippi State came back from a 16-14 deficit at the half and a 23-14 deficit in the 4th quarter to win the game on a 62 yard TD run from the QB with 4:40 left. Bulldogs QB Smith (15-30-239-3 + 14-102-1) had a big game as did the Defense, led by LB Cedric Corse (9 tackles, 2 sacks), as they knocked the Vols starting QB Jeff Francis out of the game in the 1st half then sealed the win with a last minute stand on their own 11 yard line. Tennessee were led by RB William Howard (34-185-3) who had a huge game in relief of injured starter Keith Davis. 13/09/86 - Illinois (16) @ (31) USC - USC started their season with a big win over the Illini. USC QB Rodney Peete (1 TD pass/1 TD run) started slowly leading the Trojans to only a 14-9 lead at the half. But in the 2nd half, both sides of the ball picked it up and dominated the Illini. 13/09/86 - San Jose State (20) @ (13) Washington State - Despite thunder, lightning, hail and rain, the Spartans from San Jose State over-turned a big half-time deficit to beat the Cougars in Pullman. Washington State ran out to a 13-0 lead at the half but the Spartans finally found some Offensive rhythm in the 2nd half to score 20 unanswered points to take the win. The Spartans were led by QB Mike Perez (26-47-318-1), RB's James Saxon and Kenny Jackson, WR's Guy Liggins and Lafo Malauulu and DL Mark Dean. 13/09/86 - Texas Tech (11) @ (61) Miami - #2 Miami steam-rollered Texas Tech, racing out to a 21-0 lead in the 1st Quarter and cruising home. Miami were led by QB Vinny Testaverde (16-27-330-4) through 3 quarters before making way for back-up QB Geoff Torretta. Miami also featured on Offense RB Melvin Bratton and WR Michael Irvin. On Defense they featured DL Jerome Brown, LB's George Mira and Randy Shannon and DB Bennie Blades. DB Bubba McDowell also had a big night as he blocked 2 punts and returned an interception for a TD. Texas Tech featured QB Billy Joe Tolliver (15-37-14-0) who had a tough night, WR Travis Price, TE Kevin Sprinkles and RB Ervin Farris. 20/09/86 - USC (17) @ (14) Baylor - In a wild game at Baylor Stadium, USC stole the win against the #9 ranked Bears with a last play FG. Baylor outplayed the Trojans for 3 and 1/2 quarters but only led 14-7 with 7 minutes left in the game. Then the Trojans suddenly found their rhythm and scored 10 unanswered points, including the game-winning 32 yard FG on the final play in driving rain and with lightning flashing overhead. The Bears out-gained the Trojans on Offense 408 yards to 197 yards but missed 2 FG's and turned the ball over twice. USC were led by QB Rodney Peete (9-25-100-1 + 7-29-0), WR Ken Henry (7-89-1), LB Marcus Cotton and DB Tim McDonald (school record 99 yard fumble return for a TD). 20/09/86 - Houston (28) @ (12) Oklahoma State - In a big upset in Stillwater, the Houston Cougars beat the favoured Oklahoma State Cowboys, using great all-around play to take the victory. The Cougars defense, led by LB Robert Harper and DB David Martel, shut-down the Cowboys stars of RB Thurman Thomas (19-86-0) and WR Hart Lee Dykes (4-63-0). The Cougars offense was led by back-up QB Mark Davis (6-7-108-2), who replaced injured starter Gerald Landry in the 2nd quarter, and RB Sloan Hood (19-111-2). Between them they led the Cougars to a 28-3 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. 27/09/86 - Arizona (24) @ (21) Colorado - Underdog Colorado nearly pulled off a shock win against #10 ranked Arizona before the Wildcats used a late surge to take the win. The Buffaloes led 14-6 at the half and 21-15 at the start of the 4th quarter, led by QB Mark Hatcher (134 yards + 1 TD) and RB O.C. Oliver (2 TD runs). But the Wildcats suddenly found momentum and forced a safety before winning the game on a 67 yard TD pass with 5 minutes left. Colorado also featured TE Jon Embree, LB's Eric McCarty and Tom Rheinhardt and DB Solomon Wilcots. 27/09/86 - Washington (10) @ (20) USC - #12 ranked USC upset #6 ranked Washington with a strong 2nd half at the LA Coliseum. Washington led 7-3 at the half and 10-3 in the 3rd quarter before USC reeled off 17 unanswered points to take the lead and then used great defense to keep the Huskies from a comeback. 27/09/86 - Baylor (45) @ (14) Texas Tech - On a perfect day for football, Baylor used a strong all-around game to beat Texas Tech in Lubbock. Led by QB Cody Carlson (309 yards + 2 TD's) and a rushing attack that put up 200 yards in the 1st half, Baylor took a 25-0 lead in at the half and coasted home. 11/10/86 - Colorado (17) @ (12) Missouri - Colorado finally registered their 1st win of the season, at the 5th attempt, as they held off a late Tigers rally to take the win. The Buffaloes racked up 391 yards of total offense, led by QB Mark Hatcher (1 TD run) and RB O.C. Oliver (1 TD run), and led 14-6 at the half. Missouri tried to rally in the 4th quarter, led by QB Jeff Henningsen (13-28-157-1), who was making his 1st career start, but the Buffaloes held on to win. Colorado also featured RB Anthony Weatherspoon, TE Jon Embree, LB Eric McCarty and DB Solomon Wilcots. The Tigers also featured RB Darrell Wallace, WR Robert Delpino, DL Jeff Cross, LB Gary Justis and DB's Adrian Jones and Erik McMillan. 11/10/86 - Arizona (25) @ (32) UCLA - UCLA kept their season alive with a big comeback at the Rose Bowl. Arizona raced out to an 18-0 lead at the half, but UCLA re-grouped and reeled off 24 unanswered points to take the lead. The Wildcats scored again but UCLA were on a roll and scored the game-winning TD with 41 seconds left to save their season. 18/10/86 - Baylor (30) @ (31) Texas A&M - #11 ranked Texas A&M sensationally fought back from a big deficit to beat #20 ranked Baylor, in a game rated the best SWC game of the 80's. Baylor started fast and raced out to a 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter and a 20-17 lead at the half. The Aggies still found themselves down 31-24 late in the 4th quarter when Texas A&M QB Kevin Murray led his team on an 80 yard drive to the game-winning TD with 3:48 to play. The Defense then stepped up to hold the Bears out of the end-zone and the Aggies took the victory. With the win, the Aggies wrapped up the SWC title. 25/10/86 - Missouri (17) @ (6) Kansas State - On a rainy day in Mahattan, Missouri ended a 5 game losing streak with a tight win against Kansas State. All the scoring took place in the 1st half with the Tigers scoring on a 72 yard TD while the Wildcats had to settle for FG's. The 2nd half turned into a defensive struggle but the Tigers held on for the win. The Tigers also featured QB Ronnie Cameron, WR Robert Delpino, DL Jeff Cross, LB Gary Justis and DB Adrian Jones. 01/11/86 - Colorado (31) @ (14) Oklahoma State - In a game of 2 halves, the in-form Buffaloes ran out of Stillwater with an unlikely win. The Cowboys dominated the 1st half led, by QB Mike Cundy (1 TD pass) and RB Thurman Thomas (1 TD run), as they mixed up the run and the pass to great effect to take a 14-3 lead in at the break. But in the 2nd Half, Colorado found their rushing attack and reeled off 28 unanswered points led by RB's O.C. Oliver and Anthony Weatherspoon, while the defense held Oklahoma State to minus 12 yards rushing. 01/11/86 - Texas (21) @ (23) Texas Tech - Texas Tech's new Head Coach David McWilliams put one over his old boss with a tight win in Lubbock. In the rain and fog in Jones Stadium, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 23-7 lead in the 4th quarter thanks to a team-record 96 yard punt return for a TD by WR Tyrone Thurman and 3 FG's by Scott Segrist. The Longhorns rallied with 2 TD's of their own but a failed 4th down play in the final minute ended their chance of a victory. 01/11/86 - Washington (21) @ (34) Arizona State - Arizona State showed their Rose Bowl credentials with a big win over the Huskies. The Sun Devils raced out to a 17-0 lead in the 1st quarter and never looked in trouble from then on. The hometown Sun Devils were led by QB Jeff Van Raaphorst (167 yards) and RB's Channing Williams (154 yards) and Darryl Harris (108 yards) while the defense, led by LB Stacy Harvey (2 interceptions), kept the Huskies from making a comeback. 15/11/86 - Georgia (20) @ (16) Auburn - In a big upset, #17 ranked Georgia upset #9 ranked Auburn in the game dubbed "The Game between the Hoses". The Bulldogs visited Jordan-Hare Stadium as 3-Touchdown underdogs as they were missing starting QB James Jackson who was attending his grandmothers funeral. But back-up QB Wayne Johnson (6-7-59-2 + 1 TD run) had a great game and along with RB Lars Tate (24-94-0) and a strong defensive effort, the Bulldogs ran out to a 20-10 lead in the 4th quarter. But Georgia fought back and were driving for the game-winning TD late in the game when, in the final minute, LB Steve Boswell (19 tackles, 1 interception) saved the day for the Tigers with a game-sealing interception. As the final whistle sounded, Georgia fans stormed the field and starting tearing up the field. The Auburn groundsman responded by turning on the sprinklers and then high-pressure water hoses to disperse the crowd. Georgia also featured LB John Brantley (20 tackles). 22/11/86 - Michigan (26) @ (24) Ohio State - In a shootout, #7 ranked Michigan claimed a share of the Big 10 title and a place in the Rose Bowl when Ohio State missed a 45 yard FG with 1:06 left that proved to be the game-decider. Michigan QB Jim Harbaugh (19-29-261-0), who had guaranteed a victory in the week leading up to the game, had a big game as did RB Jamie Morris (210 yards + 2 TD's). Ohio State featured QB Jim Karsatos, RB Vince Workman (126 yards), WR Cris Carter and LB Chris Spielman (29 Tackles) who tied the team record for tackles in a game. 04/12/86 - Missouri (6) @ (10) Oklahoma State - On a cold night in Stillwater, the Cowboys cameback from an early deficit to beat the Tigers. Both teams Defense's played great, forcing 5 turnovers each, but the Cowboys managed to score the only TD of the game on the last play of the 1st half to give them a lead they defended to the end. The Cowboys were led by freshman QB Mike Gundy (18-29-228-3) and also featured RB's Mitch Nash and freshman Barry Sanders (21-86-1). Nash predominately played the 1st half and Sanders the 2nd half and both played in relief of usual starter Thurman Thomas who sat out all but one play with an injury. The Cowboys also featured WR Hart Lee Dykes, DL Leonard Jackson and DB Mark Moore. The Tigers were led by QB Ronnie Williams, RB Darrell Wallace, WR Robert Delpino and LB Gary Justis. 30/12/86 - Holiday Bowl - Iowa (39) v (38) San Diego State - Iowa fought back from a 35-21 4th quarter deficit to win the game on a last play 41 yard FG. 20/12/86 - Independence Bowl - Texas Tech (17) v (20) Mississippi - In his 1st game in charge of Texas Tech, Head Coach Spike Dyke's team fell just short of overturning a big deficit against the Rebels of Ole Miss. Mississippi raced out to a 17-0 lead in the 2nd quarter before Texas Tech fought back with 17 unanswered points to tie the game early in the 4th quarter. Ole Miss re-grouped, though, and re-took the lead with a FG before holding off a last minute drive by the Red Raiders to take the win. 01/01/87 - Cotton Bowl - Ohio State (28) v (12) Texas A&M - In the 51st Cotton Bowl, the #13 ranked Buckeyes upset the Southwest Conference Champions and #8 ranked Aggies with a dominating defensive performance. The Ohio State defense forced Texas A&M QB Kevin Murray (12-31-143-0) into a Cotton Bowl record 5 interceptions, returning 2 for TD's. Buckeye LB Chris Spielman (11 tackles, 2 INT's) was named MVP with a strong all-around game.
