11/09/82 - USC (9) @ (17) Florida - #10 ranked Florida beat #13 ranked USC in Gainesville, using a great game from LB Wilber Marshall to take the win. Marshall almost single-handedly shut-down the USC Offense, registering 14 tackles and 4 sacks, while QB Wayne Peace led the Gators to a 14-0 lead at the half. USC Sophomore QB Sean Salisbury, in his 1st career start, tried to bring the Trojans back but a last play attempt at a tie was thwarted by the Gators Defense. USC also featured LB's Jack Del Rio and Keith Browner + DB Joey Browner. Florida also featured RB Lorenzo Hampton, FB James Jones and TE Mike Mularkey (9, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Broyles/Brant, NTSC)

18/09/82 - San Jose State (35) @ (31) Stanford - The final match-up between father and son (San Jose State Coach Jack Elway and Stanford QB John Elway) went the way of the father as the Spartans upset their near-neighbours at Stanford Stadium. The game ebbed-and-flowed and the Cardinal took a 24-21 lead into the 4th quarter. But Spartans QB Steve Clarkson (21-40-285-3) scored 2 TD's to put San Jose State ahead and the Defense played their part by stuffing the Cardinal Offense on 4 attempts from the Spartans 26 yard line to end the game and seal the win. Stanford QB John Elway (24-36-382-2) had a big game. San Jose State also featured WR Tim Kearse (6-163-3 + 84 yard TD pass) (8, Copied from the internet, 2 Discs, CBS - Murphy/Davis, PAL)

25/09/82 - Stanford (23) @ (20) Ohio State - On a record-setting day in Columbus, Stanford overcame a poor 1st half to upset #11 Ohio State. The Buckeyes, led by QB Mike Tomzcak (6-19-71-0 + 8-25-0) and RB Tim Spencer (26-91-1), held a 13-0 lead at the half but Stanford owned the 2nd half. Led by All-American QB John Elway (35-63-407-2) and a big defensive effort, the Cardinal pulled themselves back into the game and sealed the upset win with the Winning TD pass to WR Emile Harry (4-99-1) with 34 seconds left. The Buckeyes also featured DL Jerome Foster and LB Marcus Marek. The Cardinal also featured RB Vincent White (10-43-0) and TE Chris Dressel (8-104-0). 16/10/82 - Houston (14) @ (20) SMU - A very physical game at Texas Stadium saw the Mustangs squeeze past a strong Houston team to stay undefeated. Led by RB Eric Dickerson (241 yards) the Mustangs built on a 10-7 lead at the half and held on late to take the win. SMU lost both QB Lance McIlhenny and RB Craig James to injury for short periods of the game, leaving Dickerson to carry the load. A young Houston squad was led by QB Lionel Wilson and DL Simon Fletcher (8, Re-broadcast with missing action in the 1st and 4th quarters but no scoring missed, 1 Disc, USA Network - Arkey/Hansen, NTSC)

23/10/82 - Texas Tech (3) @ (10) Washington - #1 ranked Washington overcame a dominating defensive performance by Texas Tech DL Gabriel Rivera to stay unbeaten, but needed 10 points in the 4th quarter to do so. In a tight defensive struggle, Rivera stod out, as he made 10 tackles, one sack and batted away four passes. The game remained scoreless until the 4th quarter when the Huskies answered a Tech FG with 10 unanswered points, as RB Jacque Robinson (35-203-1) scored the only TD and Chuck Nelson kicked the clinching FG. Washington were led by QB Tim Cowan. Texas Tech were led by QB Jim Hart (8, 43 minutes of silent Black and White Game Film with the game in order of Huskies Defense then Huskies Offense then Huskies Special Teams, 1 Disc, NTSC)

30/10/82 - Texas A&M (9) @ (47) SMU - On homecoming, the SMU team gave their students and alumni a big present as they dominated the Aggies at Texas Stadium. The star was SMU RB Eric Dickerson (14-200-3) who ran all over the vaunted Aggie defense, including TD runs of 80 and 79 yards. The A&M cause wasn't helped by the loss to injury (broken leg) of starting QB Gary Kubiak in the 1st quarter, but the day belonged to Dickerson. SMU also featured RB Craig James, QB Lance McIlhenny and DL Michael Carter (8, 2 Discs, CBS - Lundquist/Davis, NTSC)

30/10/82 - Washington (31) @ (43) Stanford - #1 ranked Washington, led by QB Steve Pelluer, were upset by a strong Stanford team, led by QB John Elway. Elway threw for 267 yards + 2 TD's (8, occasional tracking line at the bottom of the screen, 2 Discs, ABC - Jackson/Broyles, PAL)

13/11/82 - Southern Mississippi (39) @ (29) Alabama - In a big upset, Southern Miss upset #17 ranked Alabama and ended the Tide's 57 game home winning streak. Southern Miss controlled the game with a ground game that produced 304 yards and 5 TD's. The heroes for the Golden Eagles were QB Reggie Collier (6-16-68-0 + 13-81-3) and RB Sam DeJarnette (26-152-2). The Alabama offense, led by QB Walter Lewis and RB Rickey Moore had a very balanced game with 230 yards rushing and 206 yards passing but the Tide defense, led by LB Cornelius Bennett, couldn't stop QB Collier (7, 1 Disc, USM Sports Network - Cox/Purvis/Strimel/Ralph, NTSC)

13/11/82 - Clemson (24) @ (22) Maryland - In front of the the fourth-largest crowd ever at Byrd Stadium, the #11 ranked Tigers, and defending national champions, won their seventh straight game and all but wrapped up a 2nd straight ACC championship. #18 ranked Maryland had their chances to score the upset win, but committed 5 turnovers in the 2nd half to throw away the chance. Maryland trailed 24-7 entering the 4th quarter but scored 2 TD's to pull within 2 points with 5:55 to play. But then the wheels came off, as they fumbled twice and had an interception on 3 straight drives to blow the chance of an upset win. Clemson featured QB's Mike Eppley and Homer Jordan, RB's Cliff Austin and Kevin Mack, DL William Perry and DB Terry Kinard. Maryland featured QB Boomer Esiason (24-39-277-1), RB Rick Badanjek (2 TD runs) and TE John Tice (Team record 11 catches) (8, Downloaded from the Internet, 1 Disc, CBS - Nelson/Haden, NTSC)

13/11/82 - Stanford (35) @ (38) UCLA - In a shootout, both teams were unstoppable and the game was settled by the team that had the ball last. UCLA led 21-18 at the half with UCLA QB Tom Ramsey and Stanford QB John Elway (29-39-353-2) both having big games. The 2nd half started quietly with only 1 score in the 3rd quarter but livened up as both teams traded scores in the 4th quarter. Stanford pulled within 3 points with 3:48 left but UCLA ran out the clock to take the win. UCLA also featured RB Kevin Nelson, WR JoJo Townsell (2 TD catches) and DB Don Rodgers. 20/11/82 - Stanford (20) @ (25) California - In Stanford QB John Elway's last game, he watched as California returned a kick-off 55 yards through 5 laterals in the final seconds of the game for the game-winning Touchdown. The miraculous TD became known as "The Play" and is the single greatest play in College Football history (9, Slightly edited re-broadcast, 2 Discs, USA Network - Tompkins/Beasley, NTSC)

11/12/82 - Div-2 Championship - Southwest Texas State (34) v (9) UC Davis - The Bobcats made history in McAllen, Texas, becoming the 1st team to retain the title. After a slow start, the Bobcats dominated the final 3 quarters of the game, forcing 6 turnovers of the Aggies and rolled up 322 yards rushing on Offense. The star of the show was Bobcats RB Ricky Sanders (24-102-2) who turned in an MVP performance. The Bobcats were coached by Jim Wacker in his final game before taking up the TCU job. SW Texas State also featured QB Ron Jacoby (1 TD pass), RB Eric Cobble (2 TD runs) and LB's Tim Staskus and Cyril Friday. 18/12/82 - California Bowl - Fresno State (29) v (28) Bowling Green - Fresno State scored 22 points in the 4th quarter to upset the Falcons. Fresno State QB Jeff Tedford (373 yards passing + 2 TD's) and WR Stephone Paige (15-246-2) did the damage (8, missing the start of the 2nd half, 1 Disc, ESPN - Slayton/Willard/Dowd, NTSC)

29/12/82 - Liberty Bowl - Alabama (21) v (15) Illinois - In Alabama coach Paul Bryant's final game, the Tide held on against a strong Illinois team to send the Bear out a winner. Illinois QB Tony Eason (35-55-423-1) was sensational but he missed 3 plays due to injury and his back-up, Kris Jenner, threw 3 interceptions that ended scoring drives, including the potential game winning drive with seconds left. The game MVP was Tide DB Jeremiah Castille with 3 interceptions. 4 weeks after the game, Paul Bryant died (8, 2 Discs, Metrosports - Kalas/Kapp/Holliday, NTSC)

01/01/83 - Fiesta Bowl - Arizona State (32) v (21) Oklahoma - Arizona State celebrated the end of their NCAA probation with a big win over the Sooners. In a shootout, it was the Sun Devils that finally managed to find some Defense, keeping the Sooners scoreless in the 4th quarter to take the win. Both teams stars had big games; ASU's QB Todd Hons (17-35-329-1) and OU's Freshman RB Marcus Dupree (17-239-0), with Dupree setting a Fiesta Bowl record for rushing yards. But the deciding factor was the Sun Devils defense, led by DL Jim Jeffcoat, that forced 6 fumbles (recovering 4) and knocked Dupree out of the game twice with injuries. The Sun Devils also featured RB Alvin Moore (20-64-1). The Sooners also featured QB Kelly Phelps (4-10-40-0 + 12-47-0) and RB Stanley Wilson (17-48-2) (8, Network left game with 10 seconds left - no scoring missed, 2 Discs, NBC - Jones/Dawson/Haffner, NTSC)

15/01/83 - Shrine Bowl - East (26) v (25) West - In the 58th Shrine Bowl in Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, California, the East Seniors staged a 2nd half comeback to win the game. Although trailing 25-14 at the start of the 4th quarter, the East rallied with 2 unanswered TD's including the game-winner with 16 seconds left. The East team were coached by Hayden Fry (Iowa) and assistant coach Lee Corso (Indiana) and featured QB's Tony Eason (21-34-202-2 including a 79 yard TD pass) (Illinois) and Babe Laufenburg (Indiana), RB's Kelvin Bryant (North Carolina), Lawrence Ricks (Michigan) and Joel Coles (Penn State), WR's Mike Miller (Tennessee), John Tice (Maryland) and Allama Matthews (Alabama), LB Walker Lee Ashley (Penn State) and kicker/punter Reggie Roby (Iowa). The West team were coached by Jack Elway (San Jose State) and featured QB's John Elway (21-34-202-1) (Stanford) and Steve Clarkson (San Jose State), RB's Vincent White (Stanford), Darryl Clark (Texas) and Tim Harris (Washington State), WR's Paul Skansi (Washington) and Jeff Simmons (USC), OL Bart Oates, DL Jim Jeffcoat (Arizona State) and DB Gill Byrd (7, Transfered from a multi-generation VHS tape - colour bars + occasional rolling picture + grainy picture, 2 Discs, CBS - Nelson/Franklin/Davis, PAL)
