27/10/79 - Houston (13) @ (10) Arkansas - In the battle of the unbeatens in the Southwest Conference, Houston claimed the win with a great defensive effort and a late FG. The #6 ranked Cougars gave the #4 ranked Razorbacks all they could handle with LB Grady Turner having a monster game, making 19 tackles, recovering a fumble, and catching an interception. The Offense produced just enough to take the lead in the 4th quarter with RB Terald Clark (135 yards + 1 TD) rushing the ball and setting up the go ahead FG with 1:16 left. Arkansas had 1 last chance to force overtime but kicker Ish Ordonez had a last play 42 yard FG blocked, ending his NCAA record streak of 16 consecutive FG's, and Houston walked away with the win. Arkansas were led by QB Kevin Scanlon and RB Gary Anderson (8, 1 Disc, Player-to-Recorder copy, ABC - Jackson/Broyles/Fleming, NTSC)

03/11/79 - Texas Tech (6) @ (14) Texas - Underdog Texas Tech nearly upset #8 ranked Texas in Austin but the Longhorns found just enough Offense to finish off the Red Raiders. The Texas Tech Offense, led by QB's Ron Reeves (before leaving in the 3rd quarter with a seperated shoulder) and Jim Hart + RB James Hadnot (25-117-0), ran the Wishbone to perfection but paid for an inability to score Touchdowns in the Red-zone. Texas held a slender 7-3 lead at the half and a 7-6 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter before a superb 4th quarter drive resulted in the game-clinching TD. Texas were led by 3 QB's : Donnie Little (2-6-20-0 + 11-48-0), Rick McIvor (3-10-68-1) and Herkie Walls (1-1-5-0) + RB's AJ Jones and Johnny Jones. 24/11/79 - Texas Tech (10) @ (14) Houston - The 8-1 Cougars of Houston staged a 2nd half comeback to beat the upset-minded Red Raiders. Texas Tech led 3-0 at the half, mainly on the running of FB James Hadnot (199 yds rushing + 1 TD) and the great defensive play of DL Gabriel Rivera and DB Tedd Watts. But the 2nd half saw the Cougars use their punishing ground game of TB Terald Clark (30-167-1) and backup QB Terry Elston + the dominating defense of DL Hosea Taylor and LB David Hodge to take control of the game and secure the win. Both teams ran the Option attack on Offense and Hadnot scored on a 61 yard TD run and Elston scored on a 72 yard TD run. The Panthers also had big games from RB Randy McMillan (26-114-2) and LB Hugh Green (12 tackles, 3 sacks). Penn State were led by QB Dayle Tate, RB Curt Warner (95 yard kick-off return TD) and RB Matt Suhey (65 yard TD run) but were missing key players from their Defense in DL Bruck Clark and Matt Millen. 3rd string QB Jeff Hostetler replaced Tate in the 3rd quarter but his elusive running was not enough to bring the Lions back (9, 2 Discs, ABC - Michaels/Broyles, PAL)
