3rd Round - Gonzaga Bulldogs (67) v (89) BYU Cougars - BYU advanced to the sweet 16 for the 1st time since 1981 with a dominating win over a high-scoring Bulldogs team. Led by Jimmer Fredette (34 points inc. 7 of 12 3-pointers) the Cougars led 45-38 at the half then pulled away early in the 2nd half to keep any chance of a Bulldogs comeback at bay. BYU also featured Jackson Emery (16 points) and Noah Hartsock (13 points). Regional Semi-Final - Duke Blue Devils (77) v (93) Arizona Wildcats - Arizona ended the reign of the defending champions with a big 2nd half display full of big dunks to advance to the Elite 8. Duke led 44-38 at the half, led by Kyrie Irving (28 points), but the Wildcats dominated the 2nd half, led by Derrick Williams (32 points, 13 rebounds), and used a 19-2 run to take the lead and coast home to the win. Arizona out-rebounded Duke 40-27 and got big games from Lamont Jones (16 points, 6 assists) and Solomon Hill (13 points, 5 rebounds). Regional Semi-Final - Kentucky Wildcats (62) v (60) Ohio State Buckeyes - #4 seed Kentucky sensationally knocked out the #1 team in the country, but needed a tough last second shot to do so. A tight game was tied at 30-30 at the half and with time winding down, Kentucky's Brandon Knight (9 points) sank a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left to shock the Buckeyes. The Wildcats also featured Josh Harrellson (17 points, 10 rebounds) and DeAndre Liggins (15 points). Regional Final - Butler Bulldogs (74) v (71) Florida Gators - Underdog Butler advanced to their 2nd straight Final Four with a tough overtime win against the #2 seed Gators. Led by Shelvin Mack (27 points, 4 rebounds), the Bulldogs fought back from an 11 point deficit in the 2nd half to force overtime then finished off the Gators with clutch shooting in the extra period. The Bulldogs also featured Matt Howard (14 points, 5 rebounds) and Khyle Marshall (10 points, 7 rebounds). Regional Final - Virginia Commonwealth Rams (71) v (61) Kansas Jayhawks - #11 seed VCU stunned #1 seed Kansas in the Alamodome to advance to the Final Four. VCU led 41-27 at the half thanks to a big game from Jamie Skeen (26 points, 10 rebounds) but the Jayhawks fought back to close within 2 points in the 2nd half before the Rams went on a 10-2 run to seal the win. VCU hit on 12 3 pointers to build the big lead. Final Four - Virginia Commenwealth Rams (62) v (70) Butler Bulldogs - In the battle of the 2 suprise teams of the Final Four, it was Butler that won through to their 2nd straight National Championship game. The Bulldogs used great defense to keep the Rams from taking control, while Shelvin Mack (24 points) and Matt Howard (17 points) kept the scoreboard ticking over and led Butler to the win. Final Four - Kentucky Wildcats (55) v (56) Connecticut Huskies - UConn ran their unbeaten streak to 10 games with a big defensive display to reach their 3rd National Championship game. Led by Kemba Walker (18 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists), Jeremy Lamb (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Alex Oriakhi (8 points, 10 rebounds) the Huskies held the Wildcats to 34% shooting in the game and held their top scorer Brandon Knight (17 points, 8 rebounds) in check. The Wildcats played good defense too, led by Terrence Jones (11 points, 15 rebounds), and were only down 54-48 with 2 minutes left but couldn't get close enough to take the win, although their final shot at the buzzer made the game seem tighter than it actually was (10, 1 Disc, CBS College Sports - Ryan/Gillen, PAL)
Final - Butler Bulldogs (41) v (53) Connecticut Huskies - UConn claimed their 3rd National Championship with big defensive effort that produced the lowest scoring final since 1949. Butler led 22-19 at the half but went cold after the break as the Huskies went on a 22-9 run to take the lead and the title. UConn were led by MVP Kemba Walker (16 points, 9 rebounds) and also featured Jeremy Lamb (12 points) and Alex Oriaki (11 points, 11 rebounds). 1st Round - BYU Cougars (78) v (72) Iona Gaels - On a record-setting day in Dayton, BYU advanced to the next round with a sensational 25 point comeback against Iona. The comeback set an NCAA Tournament record. Iona started fast, running out to a 55-40 lead at the half thanks to big games from Scott Machado (15 points, 10 assists), Mike Glover (12 points, 9 rebounds) and Jermel Jenkins (13 points). But BYU re-grouped and started a comeback that was completed in the final minute. Regional Semi-Final - Syracuse Orangemen (64) v (63) Wisconsin Badgers - #1 seed Syracuse held off a strong effort from #14 Wisconsin to advance to the Regional Final for the 1st time since 2003. The Badgers made 14 of 27 shots from 3 point range to overcome the Syracuse 2-3 zone but when they really needed it in the final seconds, they couldn't get the final 3 pointer to drop and Syracuse held on for the win. Syracuse were led by CJ Fair (15 points, 7 rebounds), Scoop Jardine (14 points, 4 assist) and Dion Waiters (13 points). Regional Final - Florida Gators (68) v (72) Louisville Cardinals - Louisville sensationally made their way back to the Final Four with a comeback win against the Gators. A hot Florida team led by 11 points with 3:58 left but the Cardinals Defense stepped up and held the Gators scoreless over the final 2:39 while scoring 15 points of their own to take the win. Louisville were led by Russ Smith (19 points, 5 rebounds), Chase Behanan (17 points, 7 rebounds) and Peyton Siva (9 points, 8 assists). Regional Final - Ohio State Buckeyes (77) v (70) Syracuse Orangemen - #2 seed Ohio State advanced to their first Final Four since 2007 with a tight win over #1 seed Syracuse. Led by star players Aaron Craft (5 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) and Jared Sullinger (19 points, 7 rebounds) the Buckeyes forged ahead late in the game and held on to take the win. The Orange were called for a record 29 fouls and the Buckeyes capitalised, making 31 of 42 free-throws. The Buckeyes also featured Deshaun Thomas (14 points, 9 rebounds) and Lenzelle Smith Jr (18 points). The Orange were led by Brandon Triche (15 points), Scoop Jardine (14 points, 6 assists) and Kris Joseph (10 points). Regional Final - North Carolina Tarheels (67) v (80) Kansas Jayhawks - In a shootout in St.Louis, the Jayhawks used a big 2nd half to put away the Tarheels and advance to the Final Four. Both teams went for it in the 1st half with the Tarheels shooting 64% and the Jayhawks 56%. But Kansas tightened up in the 2nd half, holding North Carolina to only 23%, and Kansas made the shots they needed to to take the win. Kansas were led by Tyshawn Taylor (22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists), Thomas Robinson (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Jeff Withey (15 points, 8 rebounds). All 5 starters scored in double figures. Final Four - Kentucky Wildcats (69) v (61) Louisville Cardinals - In the biggest "Bluegrass Showdown" ever, #1 seed Kentucky out-lasted their big in-state rivals to reach their 1st Title game since 1998. Led by Anthony Davis (18 points, 14 rebounds), Doron Lamb (10 points) and Marquis Teague (8 points, 5 assists), the Wildcats took a 35-28 lead in at the half and held off a strong fightback by the Cardinals in the 2nd half to take the win. Final Four - Kansas Jayhawks (64) v (62) Ohio State Buckeyes - In the battle of the #2 seeds, it was Kansas that fought back from a terrible 1st half to win the game and book a place in their 2nd final in 4 years. Led by Jared Sullinger (13 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks), Aaron Craft (11 points) and William Buford (19 points) the Buckeyes took a 34-25 lead in at the half. But the Jayhawks used a 13-4 run at the start of the 2nd half to get back into the game and finally hit the front for good with 1:35 to play. The Jayhawks were led by Thomas Robinson (19 points, 8 rebounds), Jeff Withey (4 points, 8 rebounds, 7 blocks), Travis Releford (15 points, 6 rebounds) and Tyshawn Taylor (10 points, 9 assists). Final - Kansas Jayhawks (59) v (67) Kentucky Wildcats - In a hard fought, physical game it was Kentucky that won out, claiming their 8th National Championship with a big win against Kansas. Led by Player of the Year Anthony Davis (6 points, 16 rebounds, 6 blocks) the Wildcats led 41-27 at the half, then used a great defensive effort to shut down the free-scoring Jayhawks while converting their own opportunities at key moments to stay in front and close out the game. Kentucky finished with 11 blocks, 4 steals and forced 9 turnovers. The Wildcats also featured Doron Lamb (22 points), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Terrence Jones (9 points). 2nd Round - South Dakota State Jackrabbits (56) v (71) Michigan Wolverines - #4 seed Michigan breezed through to the 3rd round with a comfortable win at Auburn Hills. After a tight 1st half that the Wolverines only led 30-26, their big stars picked up their game to see them through. Michigan were led by Mitch McGary (13 points, 9 rebounds), Glen Robinson III (21 points, 6 rebounds) and Tim Hardaway Jr (21 points) but star guard Trey Burke (6 points, 7 assists) had a quiet night. 3rd Round - Michigan Wolverines (78) v (53) Virginia Commonwealth Rams - #4 seed Michigan dominated the #5 seed Rams with a big game from star Freshman Mitch McGary (21 points, 14 rebounds). Michigan opened up a 38-23 lead at the half and never looked in trouble the rest of the way. Michigan also featured Trey Burke (18 points, 7 assists), Tim Hardaway Jr (14 points) and Glen Robinson III (14 points, 9 rebounds). 3rd Round - Marquette Golden Eagles (74) v (72) Butler Bulldogs - In a back and forth game at Rupp Arena, Marquette game back from a 35-27 deficit at the half to advance to the next round. Led by Rotnei Clarke (24 points), the Bulldogs took a comfortable lead in at the break, but Marquette's Vander Blue (29 points) took over the 2nd half and tied the game with 1.5 minutes left that his team-mates built on and defended to the end. Regional Semi-Final - Syracuse Orangemen (61) v (50) Indiana Hoosiers - #4 seed Syracuse upset #1 seed Indiana with a big defensive performance to move onto the Regional Final. The Orangemen held the Hoosiers to their lowest points output of the season, forcing 19 turnovers and blocking 10 shots, while building a 34-22 lead at the half that they defended to the end. Regional Semi-Final - Michigan Wolverines (87) v (85) Kansas Jayhawks - In arguably the game of the tournament, Michigan booked a place in the Regional Final with a sensational comeback in Dallas. Kansas dominated the bulk of the game and held a 10 point lead with 2:19 to go but Michigan suddenly got hot and went on a 14-4 run, culminating in an Overtime-forcing 3 pointer with 4 seconds left in the game. Once in Overtime, Michigan finished off the Jayhawks and took the win. Michigan were led by Trey Burke (23 points, 10 assists), Mitch McGary (25 points, 14 rebounds), Glenn Robinson III (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Tim Hardaway Jr (10 points, 3 assists). Regional Final - Syracuse Orangemen (55) v (39) Marquette Golden Eagles - In a tight Defensive struggle, Syracuse found just enough Offense to move onto their 1st Final Four since 2003. The Orange Defense dominated the 1st half, leading 24-18 at the break, as Marquette went over 6 minutes without even attempting a shot. The 2nd half followed a similar pattern. The Shockers took a 35-22 lead in at the half and held off a furious rally by the Buckeyes in the 2nd half to take the win. Louisville had to re-group after 6th man Kevin Ware badly broke his leg in the 1st half. The Cardinals led 35-32 at the break and when Duke tied the game at 42-42 early in the 2nd half, Louisville stepped up their game to run out winners. Louisville were led by Russ Smith (23 points), Peyton Siva (16 points, 4 assists) and Gorgui Dieng (14 points, 11 rebounds). Duke were led by Mason Plumlee (17 points, 12 rebounds), Seth Curry (12 points) and Quinn Cook (12 points, 5 assists). Final Four - Louisville Cardinals (72) v (68) Wichita State Shockers - #1 seed Louisville finally saw off #9 seed Wichita State in the 2nd half to book their place in their 1st National Championship game since 1986. Both teams were evenly matched in the 1st half, with Wichita State holding a 26-25 lead at the break. The Shockers started the 2nd half strong, holding a 12 point lead after 13:35, but Louisville countered with a 21-8 run to turn the game around and win the game. National Championship - Michigan Wolverines (76) v (82) Louisville Cardinals - Louisville completed their amazing late season run to win their 3rd National Championship. The Cardinals ended their 16 game win streak with a come-from-behind win over the Wolverines. Michigan led by as much as 12 points in the 1st half but only by 1 point at half-time, 38-37. The 2nd half belonged to Louisville, though, as they forged ahead and closed out the game with a 9-2 run in the final 5 minutes to take the title. The MVP award went to Luke Hancock (22 points, 3 assists) and Louisville also fetaured Peyton Siva (18 points6 rebounds, 5 assists), Chane Behanan (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Gorgui Dieng (8 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists). Regional Semi-Final - UCLA Bruins (62) v (74) Gonzaga Bulldogs - #2 seed Gonzaga finally ended #11 seed UCLA's run in the tournament and booked their place in their 1st Regional Final since 1999. After a sloppy 1st half that Gonzaga led 35-28 at the break, Gonzaga pulled away in the 2nd half, led by big men Przemek Karnowski (18 points, 9 rebounds) and Domantas Sabonis (12 points, 8 rebounds). Kyle Wiltjer (8 points, 10 rebounds) also had a big game. UCLA were led by Tony Parker (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Norman Powell (16 points) but star guard Bryce Alford (8 points, 4 assists) had a quiet game. Regional Final - Notre Dame Fighting Irish (66) v (68) Kentucky Wildcats - #3 seed Notre Dame almost shocked #1 seed and unbeaten Kentucky but the Wildcats held on to advance to the Final Four. A tight 1st half ended 31-31 and, with time running down in the 2nd half, Notre Dame held a 66-64 lead. Kentucky tied the game with a lay-up, then forced the Irish into a missed shot before clinching the win by forcing a foul which the Wildcats converted into the winning points off of 2 Free-Throws. Kentucky were led by Karl-Anthony Towns (25 points, 4 assists), Trey Lyles (9 points) and Devin Booker (10 points). Regional Final - Michigan State Spartans (76) v (70) Louisville Cardinals - #7 seed Michigan State shocked #4 seed Louisville with an Overtime win in Syracuse. Louisville had the better of the 1st half and led 40-32 at the break. But the Spartans fought back in the 2nd half to hold a 65-64 lead with 4 seconds left when Louisville drew the foul and had 2 free-throws to win the game.
