2020
Round 1 - Richmond Tigers (105) v (81) Carlton Blues - In a bizarre opening game of the season, the Blues and Tigers faced off in an empty MCG stadium and it was the Tigers that took the win to start the defense of their title. The AFL banned supporters as a result of the growing Coronavirus pandemic, and the game was played with shortened 16-minute quarters. The Tigers started fast and raced out to a 44-13 lead after the 1st quarter and a 69-23 lead at half-time. Carlton kicked 5 goals in the 3rd quarter and the opening 19 points of the 4th quarter to pull within 16 points, but the Tigers steadied the ship and pulled away for the victory. Richmond featured Dustin Martin (24 disposals, 4 tackles), Dion Prestia (25 disposals, 5 tackles) and Jack Riewoldt (3 goals, 5 marks). Carlton featured Jack Martin (4 goals, 17 disposals, 6 marks), Patrick Cripps (31 disposals) and Sam Docherty (26 disposals, 7 marks) (9, 2 Discs, CH7 - McAvaney/Brayshaw/Hodge/Ling/Richardson/Holmes, PAL)

Round 1 - Geelong Cats (73) @ (105) GWS Giants - GWS kicked off their 2020 campaign with a big win against the Cats at Giants Stadium. The Giants were trying to put behind them a poor showing in the 2019 Grand Final and started fast, opening up a 17 point lead in the 1st quarter. The Cats roared back to pull within 4 points, but paid for inaccurate kicking in front of goal as the Giants took their chances and pulled away in the 2nd half for the win. The Giants were missing Tim Taranto, Zac Williams and Callan Ward to injury but still featured Toby Greene (16 disposals, 4 goals), Harry Perryman (20 disposals, 4 goals), Stephen Coniglio (19 disposals, 2 goals). The Cats featured Mitch Duncan (21 disposals, 3 goals), Gary Ablett (24 disposals, 1 goal) and Patrick Dangerfield (16 disposals, 1 goal). The next day the AFL suspended the season due to the Coronavirus pandemic (9, 2 Discs, CH7 - Brayshaw/Darcy/Richardson/Holmes, PAL)

Round 2 - Hawthorn Hawks (47) @ (108) Geelong Cats - In their first games back after the Coronavirus Lockdown, Geelong used a strong 2nd half to beat the Hawks at an empty GMHBA Stadium. The game was also Patrick Dangerfield's 250th AFL game and Hawthorn's first game in Geelong since 2006. The Cats opened the contest with 3 unanswered goals but the Hawks roared back to only trail by 7 at the break, 47-40. The 2nd half belonged to the Cats though. They out-scored the Hawks 10 goals to 1 and held them scoreless in the 4th quarter to take the victory. Geelong featured Joel Selwood (28 disposals), Brandan Parfitt (19 disposals, 10 tackles), Gary Ablett (21 disopsals, 2 goals, 3 tackles), Patrick Dangerfield (24 disposals, 1 goal), Gryan Miers (20 disposals, 3 goals) and Luke Dahlhaus (15 disposals, 2 goals). Hawthorn featured Shaun Burgoyne (9 disopsals, 1 goals, 5 tackle), Jack Gunston (2 goals) and Tom Mitchell (22 disposals) (10, 2 Discs, CH7 - Taylor/McLachlan/Watson/Bartel, PAL)

Round 6 - Geelong Cats (73) @ (46) Brisbane Lions - Geelong used a strong 2nd half display to upset the Lions at the SCG and moved to #2 in the table. The Lions dominated the 1st half but inaccurate kicking resulted in them only holding a 10 point lead at the half, 32-22. The Cats came out a different team after the break and scored 7 unanswered goals to go into the 4th quarter with a 67-33 lead that they easily defended to the end. The Cats were led by Sam Simpson (27 disposals), Patrick Dangerfield (26 disposals), Gary Ablett Jr (14 disposals, 2 goals) and Tom Hawkins (3 goals, 6 marks). The Lions were led by Lachie Neale (26 disposals, 1 goal), Jarryd Lyons (20 disposals) and Dayne Zorko (16 disposals) (10, 2 Discs, CH7 - McAvaney/McLachlan/Watson/Bolton, PAL)

Round 8 - Geelong Cats (48) @ (16) Fremantle Dockers - At a wet and slippery Optus Stadium, Geelong held Fremantle goalless for almost 3 quarters on the way to a 32-point win, and moved back up into the top 3. The 16 points scored by the Dockers was their 2nd lowest ever. The game was dominated by scrappy floor play and scoring chances were hard to come by. Geelong only led 21-3 at the half but with the Dockers only scoring 13 points in the entire 2nd half, the Cats score was more than enough to secure the win. Geelong featured Cam Guthrie (30 disposals), Mark Blicavs (19 disposals, 8 clearances), Tom Hawkins (3 goals, 5 marks) and debutant Brad Close (1 goal, 14 disposals, 3 marks) but were missing Joel Selwood (injured) and Gary Ablett Jr (rested). Round 12 - Fremantle Dockers (36) v (40) Carlton Blues - In a sensational finish at a rainy Optus Stadium in Perth, Carlton kept alive their Finals hopes with a last-play win. After a slow start, the Blues pushed on in the 2nd half but poor finishing kept the Dockers in the game. With Fremantle leading 36-34 with 16 seconds left, the Dockers conceded a late-hit penalty on a last-gasp 50-entry by the Blues.
