Round 1 - Geelong Cats (93) @ (86) Hawthorn Hawks - The Cats continued their mastery over the Hawks with a big win in Round 1 at the MCG. Hawthorn dominated the 1st half, making the Cats pay for inaccurate kicking in front of goal by taking a 57-37 lead in at the half. But Geelong responded by out-scoring the Hawks 8 goals to 4 in the 2nd half to take the win, their 10th straight against the Hawks since the 2008 Grand Final. The Cats were led by a great game from captain Joel Selwood (33 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal) and also featured Paul Chapman (25 disposals, 1 goal), Corey Enright (21 disposals) and Harry Taylor (17 disposals, 6 marks). Round 1 - St.Kilda Saints (77) @ (90) Gold Coast Suns - The Suns started their 3rd season with a big win at Metricon Stadium, overcoming a big deficit at the half with a strong 4th quarter. The Saints led 45-26 at the half before the Suns started a big comeback, out-scoring the Saints 7.1 to 3.3 in the 4th quarter to take the win. The stars for the Suns were Gary Ablett Jr (34 disposals, 4 goals), Charlie Dixon (2 goals), Dion Prestia (22 disposals) and Jarrod Harbrow (26 disposals). Round 3 - Carlton Blues (103) @ (119) Geelong Cats - The Cats maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a tight win at Etihad Stadium. Both teams had periods of dominance but Geelong led at the end of every quarter, and by 33 points at the end of the 3rd quarter. But the Blues scored 4 unanswered goals to pull with 11 points before Geelong regained their composure and saw out the game with 1 more goal. The Cats were led by Taylor Hunt (3 goals), Harry Taylor (20 disposals, 11 marks, 2 goals), Tom Hawkins (3 goals), Matthew Stokes (30 disposals, 1 goal) and Tom Lonergan (playing his 100th game). Round 4 - Geelong Cats (124) @ (103) Sydney Swans - In a battle between 2 unbeaten teams at the SCG, it was the Cats that emerged victorious. After a sensational 1st quarter where both teams combined for 15 goals, the game settle down and the Swans took a 63-58 lead in at the half. Geelong turned the game around by out-scoring the Swans 7 goals to 1 in the 3rd quarter then kept the Swans at bay the rest of the way to take the win. Round 7 - Essendon Bombers (85) @ (113) Geelong Cats - In a huge Friday Night match-up between #1 Essendon and #2 Geelong, it was the Cats that kept their unbeaten record at the end of the game. The Bombers started the better and led by 18 points in the 2nd quarter, but Geelong dominated the 2nd half to take the win. Geelong out-scored Essendon 10:4 to 5:10 in the 2nd half as the Bombers paid for inaccurate shooting. Geelong were led by man-of-the-match Steve Johnson (career-high 36 disposals) and also featured Stephen Motlop (28 disposals, 1 goal), Matthew Stokes (24 disposals, 11 marks, 3 goals) and James Kelly (23 disposals, 8 tackles). Round 8 - Geelong Cats (96) @ (102) Collingwood Magpies - In a see-saw game at the MCG, Collingwood knocked off unbeaten Geelong. The Pies dominated the 1st half and led by 26 points at the break, but Geelong scored 8 goals in the 3rd quarter to take a 13 point lead after 3 quarters. Collingwood didn't quit, though, and out-scored the Cats 4 goals to 1 in the final quarter, with the winning goal coming 2 minutes from time. The Pies were led by Sam Dwyer (27 disposals, 3 goals), Scott Pendlebury (31 disposals) and Harry O'Brien (31 disposals). Round 9 - Sydney Swans (102) @ (55) Collingwood Magpies - The Swans celebrated the "Indigenous Round" of the tournament with a big win over Colingwood, their 1st against the Pies at the MCG in 13 years. The Swans led 51-22 at the half and despite a brief fight-back by the Pies in the 4th quarter, the Swans cruised to the win. The game was marred by a racist taunt of the Swans Adam Goodes by a Pies fan in the 4th quarter who called him an "Ape". The fan was ejected from the game. The Swans were led by Goodes (30 disposals, 3 goals), Daniel Hanneberry (31 dispoals, 2 goals) and Kieren Jack (27 disposals). Round 13 - Geelong Cats (98) @ (103) Brisbane Lions - In a sensational game at the Gabba, the struggling Lions upset the high-flying Cats with a huge 4th quarter comeback. The Cats dominated the opening 3 quarters and led by 52 points late in the quarter when the Lions suddenly found some life. The game turned in an instant and the Lions rattled off 10 of the last 11 goals of the game including the game winner from 50m after the final siren had sounded. The comeback equaled the eighth-biggest in VFL/AFL history. Brisbane featured Simon Black (33 disposals), Brent Moloney (22 disposals, 3 goals), Jonathan Brown (14 disposals, 1 goal, 8 marks) and Ashley McGrath (3 goals). Round 14 - Fremantle Dockers (44) @ (85) Geelong Cats - #3 Geelong hosted #4 Fremantle and the Cats continued their home win-streak with a physical win at Simonds Stadium. After a very hard-fought 1st half, the Cats took a 37-26 lead in at the half then completely dominated the 2nd half, holding Freo to only 1 inside 50 in the 3rd quarter and out-scoring them 6.12 to 3.0. The stars for Geelong were Tom Hawkins (2 goals, 2 marks) and Allen Christensen (36 disposals) in attack and Harry Taylor (28 disposals, 10 marks) in Defense. Round 15 - Hawthorn Hawks (72) @ (82) Geelong Cats - #2 Geelong extended their amazing win streak over the #1 Hawks since 2008 to 11-0 with a tight win at the MCG. Geelong's defense helped them to a 33 point lead in the 4th quarter before Hawthorn fought back to within 3 points. But the Cats held firm, and closed out the game to take the win and join the Hawks in top spot on the ladder. The stars for Geelong were captain Joel Selwood (34 disposals, 1 goal), Josh Hunt (20 disposals, 10 marks) and Jordan Murdoch (3 goals). Round 17 - Collingwood Magpies (78) @ (85) Gold Coast Suns - In front of a loud and boisterous crowd at Metricon Stadium, the Suns claimed their 1st ever win over a top 8 team. The Suns led at every break and held on in the 4th quarter as the Pies mounted a comeback. The Suns were led by captain Gary Ablett Jr (49 disposals, 7 marks, 2 goals) who had a huge game, and also featured Harley Bennell (23 disposals, 6 tackles), Jarrod Harbrow (21 disposals) and Jared Brennan (3 goals). Round 17 - Geelong Cats (92) @ (94) Adelaide Crows - The Crows stunned the #2 Cats with a big comeback win at AAMI Stadium. Geelong led by 5 goals in the 3rd quarter before Adelaide went on a run that saw them out-score the Cats 5:2 to 2:4 to end the game. The Cats had 2 chances to win the game in the final minute but kicked behinds instead of goals and the Crows held on to take the victory. The Crows were led by Ricky Henderson (32 disposals, 9 marks), Bernie Vince (25 disposals, 2 goals) and Matthew Wright (4 goals) but were missing Patrick Dangerfield to injury. Round 18 - St.Kilda Saints (36) @ (137) Geelong Cats - Under the lights at Simonds Stadium, the Cats rebounded from their loss to the Crows with a mauling of the Saints. Both teams were even at 25-25 after the 1st quarter, but the Cats turned the screw to lead 77-31 at the half, then kicked the final 15 goals of the game to run out easy winners. The stars for Geelong were Tom Hawkins (5 goals, 6 marks), Steven Motlop (29 disposals, 4 goals) and Joel Selwood (32 disposals). Round 19 - Geelong Cats (86) @ (96) North Melbourne Kangaroos - The Kangaroos kept their slim post-season hopes alive with an upset win over Geelong. In a repeat of their previous encounter in Round 2, the Roos held a 19 point lead in the 4th quarter before the Cats fought back to within 11 points, but this time the Roos held on to take the win. The Roos were led by Brent Harvey (37 disposals), Daniel Wells (4 goals, 18 dispsoals) and Lachlan Hansen (30 dispsoals, 10 marks). Round 22 - Sydney Swans (48) @ (92) Geelong Cats - #2 Geelong put down a marker for the post-season with a big win over the #4 Swans. The Cats blew open a tight game in the 4th quarter, out-scoring the Swans over the final term. Qualifying Final - Fremantle Dockers (87) @ (72) Geelong Cats - In a big upset at Simonds Stadium, Fremantle knocked off #2 Geelong to advance to the Preliminary Final. The game was the 1st Finals game at Geelong since 1897 and only the Dockers 2nd ever win in Geelong. The Cats started the better and held an early 20 point lead before Fremantle came back to lead 51-47 at the half. The game went back-and-forth into the 4th quarter where Fremantle won the game by kicking 2.3 to Geelong's 0.5. The stars for the Dockers were Michael Barlow (32 disposals, 3 goals), Nathan Fyfe (25 disposals) and Lee Spurr (29 disposals, 10 marks). Semi-Final - Geelong Cats (96) v (80) Port Adelaide Power - Geelong booked a place in the Preliminary Final with a comeback win over the Power. Port Adelaide led by 23 points at the half, but Geelong scored 5 goals in the 3rd quarter to take a lead in the game that they would hold to the end. The stars for Geelong were Paul Chapman (20 Disposals, 4 goals), Steve Johnson (25 Disposals, 9 marks), Steven Motlop (25 Disposals, 2 goals) and Matthew Stokes (28 Disposals). Preliminary Final - Hawthorn Hawks (102) v (97) Geelong Cats - Hawthorn finally ended the "Kennett Curse", beating Geelong for the 1st time in 12 tries to book a place in their 2nd straight Grand Final. Geelong overcame a 50-46 deficit at the half by kicking 7 goals in the 3rd quarter to lead by 20 points at the final change. But Hawthorn dominated the final quarter, scoring 4 goals to 1 to take the narrow win. Hawthorn were led by Sam Mitchell (38 disposals, 5 marks), Grant Birchall (27 disposals) and Jack Gunston (21 disposals, 4 goals). Preliminary Final - Fremantle Dockers (99) v (74) Sydney Swans - Fremantle booked a place in their 1st ever Grand Final with a stunning Defensive display in Perth against the reigning champions. The Dockers dominated the 1st half, racing out to a 53-14 lead at the half, and despite a big 4th quarter from the Swans, the Dockers cruised home for the win. The stars for Fremantle were David Mundy (29 disposals), Ryan Crowley (22 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal), Matthew Pavlich (15 disposals, 2 goals) and Michael Walters (14 disposals, 3 goals). Grand Final - Hawthorn Hawks (77) v (62) Fremantle Dockers - Hawthorn made amends for their shock loss in 2012 with a big win at the MCG to claim their 11th VFL/AFL title. A battle between the leagues best Offense (Hawthorn) and the leagues best Defense (Fremantle) went the way of the Hawks as they used great Defense of their own to force Freo into a poor shooting performance. The Hawks led by 23 points at the half and, despite the Dockers rallying in the 3rd quarter to within 3 points, the Hawks pulled away in the 4th quarter to win the cup. The Norm Smith medal winner was Hawthorn Defender Brian Lake (22 disposals, 10 marks). The Hawks also featured Jack Gunston (4 goals), Cyril Rioli (15 disposals, 1 goal) and Jordan Lewis (26 disposals).
